Mr. BARTLETT of Maryland. Mr. Speaker, if you go to your computer this evening and do a Google search for peak oil, you will find there a large assortment of articles and comments. Like every issue, you will find a few people who are on the extreme, but there will be a lot of mainstream […]
The number of people who struggle with the cost of heating their homes is set to increase, according to two new reports. Fuel poverty could affect between one and two million households in England by 2009, energy campaign groups warn. Rising energy prices and relatively static incomes will leave people struggling to pay fuel bills, […]

A spike in oil prices above $60 per barrel along with other energy price rises posed another important economic risk. “It is a shock. We do estimate a three-quarter-percentage point loss in real growth this year as a consequence of these prices,” he told lawmakers during the question-and-answer session that followed his prepared testimony. A […]
Decades of British and American intervention in the oil-rich Middle East motivated the London bombers, Ken Livingstone has suggested. The London mayor told BBC News he had no sympathy with the bombers and he opposed all violence. But he argued that the attacks would not have happened had Western powers left Arab nations free to […]
CHICAGO – Lawns are turning brown. Flowers are wilting. Water levels are so low that ducks can stand in some rivers and streams. A drought that is stunting corn, rice and soybean crops across the nation’s Farm Belt is also leading many communities in more urban parts of the Midwest to ban lawn-watering and urge homeowners to conserve.
The drought-stricken area cuts a swath from eastern Texas up into the Great Lakes region, taking in parts of Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and virtually all of Illinois.
In June, Chicago got only about three-quarters of inch, compared with the usual 3.63 inches. And July is shaping up to be even worse, with about 0.70 inches so far in a month that typically gets 3.51 inches.
In Indianapolis, officials have pleaded with customers to cut back on their use of water. St. Peters, Mo., made a similar request. So did Chicago, where WGN-TV meteorologist Dennis Haller said this is the driest summer so far in 135 years.

In a statement, the embassy said that militants were planning fresh attacks in the world’s biggest oil exporter. The statement said: “The American embassy in Riyadh […]
George W. Bush’s war in Iraq may not be going as planned. But for those who’ve stopped believing the myth that prewar Iraq represented any sort of threat to the United States, there is plenty of circumstantial evidence mounting that the real reason for the American invasion of Iraq was the most obvious one: Oil. […]
The man who served as Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States is stepping down. Prince Bandar bin Sultan has been one of the most influential players in Washington for more than twenty years. Bandar’s replacement will have to tackle two critical issues facing the two nations — Saudi Arabia’s role in the fight against terrorism and the high price of oil.
Oil prices fell sharply on Wednesday after a U.S. government report showed a smaller-than-expected decline in stockpiles last week as higher imports and slower refinery activity muted the effects of Hurricane Dennis. U.S. light, sweet crude oil futures dropped $1.36 to $56.10 a barrel, the lowest since June 30, while London Brent crude fell $1.01 […]
European Commissioners have supported the environment plans of the EU executive despite concerns about costs to industry.
Their debate on Wednesday (20 July) was put under the spotlight by both industry and green lobbies, who were expecting a sound exchange of views between pro-business commissioners, led by president Jose Manuel Barroso, and the Greek environment commissioner Stavros Dimas.
It concerned seven main eco-strategies to be launched by the commission in the second part of this year, covering air pollution, marine environment, sustainable use of resources, waste prevention and recycling, pesticides, soil quality and the urban environment.
As we move through this period of grace before the tightening oil supply situation becomes more clearly evident to more people, there are increasing numbers of statistics appearing that seem to confuse the issue. For example there was the recent revision upward of the US demand growth last year by 213,000 bd. Then there are also some conflicting views on what China plans on doing, some of which discussion is given in our earlier posts of this past week. There are questions about the state of Russian production, and exactly how much oil is coming, and from where in the Middle East. In addition there is the conflict over the actual amount that the British part of the North Sea oil is declining, is it the 17% that has been noted as occurring monthly for the past quarter by the Scotsman, or is it the 5.6% that the latest UKOOA report would have it.
Some of these issues can be explained. For example the current drop in North Slope production of 6.5% for June was due to pipeline maintenance . The recent short term drops in production from the Gulf, including Cantarell in Mexico, are transient ones caused by the need to ensure the safety of the platforms and crews.
Others, however, cannot…

Norway’s monthly oil production fell to an 11-year low of 2.29 million barrels per day (bpd) in June, hit by halts of many offshore fields for maintenance, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said on Tuesday. Production was down from 2.65 million bpd in May and 2.88 million in June 2004.

In 1997, Joseph Riva, senior geologist writing for the Colorado School of Mines, turned a skeptical eye toward the rapidly emerging dependence of the United States on natural gas (NG). Riva suggested that the rush to embrace NG as the primary fuel to meet incremental electricity and space heating demand was based more on sociopolitical […]
