European Commissioners have supported the environment plans of the EU executive despite concerns about costs to industry.
Their debate on Wednesday (20 July) was put under the spotlight by both industry and green lobbies, who were expecting a sound exchange of views between pro-business commissioners, led by president Jose Manuel Barroso, and the Greek environment commissioner Stavros Dimas.
It concerned seven main eco-strategies to be launched by the commission in the second part of this year, covering air pollution, marine environment, sustainable use of resources, waste prevention and recycling, pesticides, soil quality and the urban environment.
