While the climate policy world is littered with numbers, three of them have dominated recent discourse: 2, 1000, and 66.
At the 2015 U.N. climate summit in Paris, world leaders agreed to limit global warming below 2°C to avoid catastrophic impacts of human-caused climate change. The science consequently dictates that, for a 50% chance of staying below 2°C, around 1,000 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (or 300 billion tonnes of carbon) can be emitted between now and 2050, and close to zero thereafter. We’re currently emitting 36 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. However, the potential greenhouse gas emissions contained in known, extractable fossil fuel reserves are around three times higher than this carbon budget, meaning that 66% must be kept in the ground.
The debate du jour thus centers on which emissions reduction pathway is most optimal for staying below 2°C. The calculus of many policymakers, economists, fossil fuel companies, and indeed scientists, is that the most economical way to stay below 2°C is to delay most emissions reductions for decades to come, and then to play catch up by relying heavily on as-yet technically and economically unviable negative-emissions technologies. However, a crucial number has been neglected in this mainstream calculation: 6.1 million.
Each year, 6.1 million lives are lost prematurely due to air pollution. Though most acutely and visibly hampering megacities of the developing world, air pollution is a growing public health emergency that affects almost all of us in our daily lives, whether or not we are aware of it. The Health Effects Institute estimates that only 5% of the global population are lucky enough to live in areas with air pollution levels below safe guidelines. Though recent studies suggest there may in fact be no risk-free level of air pollution.
Why is this number relevant to climate policy? Because one common culprit is responsible for the majority of both climate change and air pollution: fuel combustion. Burning coal, oil, natural gas, and biomass – for everyday uses ranging from electricity, heating, cooking, to transportation – releases hundreds of gases and particles, some of which disrupt the climate system or are harmful to human health, or both. Climate change could also worsen air quality in the future.
Decades of research have revealed that air pollution is associated with a wide range of diseases and disorders, including asthma, cancer, heart disease, stroke, and premature birth. There is also emerging evidence that pollution from coal combustion and motor vehicles can cause development delays, reduced IQ, and autism in children. The societal and economic costs of air pollution are multifold. There are costs to the affected individuals, to their families and to society in terms of direct medical costs, costs to healthcare systems, productivity losses, and lower economic growth (not to mention costs resulting from damages to ecosystems).
Yet almost none of these costs stemming from our fossil fuel reliance are included in the majority of cost-benefit analyses of climate mitigation strategies. A recent study estimates that the health co-benefits from air pollution reductions would outweigh the mitigation costs of staying below 2°C by 140–250% globally. Historical evidence paints a similar picture. The EPA estimates that the U.S. Clean Air Amendments cost $65bn to implement, but will have yielded a benefit of almost $2tn by 2020 in avoided health costs.
Many public healthexpert groups have underscored the enormous opportunity for leaders worldwide to design policies and initiatives that will simultaneously tackle climate change and air pollution. Examples include replacing the most carbon-intensive and polluting sources such as coal and heavy-duty diesel with lower-emission or renewable alternatives, ending fossil fuel subsidies, redesigning urban spaces to make it easier and safer to commute by foot, bicycle, and public transportation, and transitioning to a more circular and sustainable economy. While the climatic mitigation effects of such measures are long-term and dispersed globally, the health benefits are immediate and local.
For too long, the enormous toll of disease and deaths from fossil fuel pollution has been neglected in climate change policies and underappreciated by the public. But public health data makes it clear that not all 2°C scenarios are created equal. The lives and well-being of hundreds of millions of us – especially our children – could be at stake. We would be remiss to ignore it.

“Renewable energy + unlimited amounts of coal under the North Sea will ensure that Europe will ALWAYS achieve its 100% renewable energy goals.”
How do unlimited amounts of coal help you achieve a 100% renewable energy goal? If 100% renewable energy is what you are aiming to achieve, why would coal come into the discussion at all?
Burning coal to provide backup for renewable energy sources is rather perverse, since the whole point of using renewable energy is to reduce dependence on depleting fossil fuels. Also, unless you can burn coal without generating air pollution, you end up accepting a pollution load that will kill tens of thousands of people each year.
All this to avoid investing in a nuclear power supply, that might release enough radioactive pollution to kill several thousands on the unlikely off-chance that a reactor suffers massive core damage. You have to be careless or unlucky for that to happen, whereas the fossil air pollution will happen all the time – kind of like living within a continuous nuclear meltdown that poisons you every time you take a breath.
I would also question how sustainable renewable energy really is. It takes about 10 times more steel and concrete to generate a KW of power with wind energy than with a light water reactor. When you deal with intermittency, the material burden increases even more. A portion of these materials can be recycled, but the fact remains replacing a MW of renewable energy, requires at least 10 times more processed raw materials than the equivalent nuclear plant. These materials come from finite ore bodies. This is an unavoidable consequence relying on a low power density energy source.
It is therefore highly questionable that a renewable energy system could be more sustainable or that it is really any safer than nuclear power when the full consequences are weighed. The opposite conclusion could be drawn. It doesn’t need fuel, but its requirement of every other resource is at least an order of magnitude greater.
A 100% renewable energy supply is possible, but not a desirable option, because the infrastructure that you need to live on these energy sources without backup is completely different to what you have today and would require a generally very different way of life. This is a consequence of intermittency and whilst there are solutions to the problem, one way or another, they cost a lot of money.
You are attempting to implement this difficult policy, at the same time as you attempt to fight an evil monster that is constantly probing you for weakness. You may ultimately find that you need a powerful military to prevent yourselves from being crushed between a Zionist-USA and a nationalist Russia. You really expect to be able to do that whilst you are trying to adapt to intermittent, low-EROI energy sources? It’s like trying to run around the world on a diet of cabbage.
From a purely ideological viewpoint, adapting our society to survive off of ambient renewable energy seems better than good. Yet, it is wholly inappropriate when weighed against the other resource shortages that we will face in the coming decades and the wars that we will need excess energy to fight.

“In the coming years “IF” solar and wind hit a penetration point where storage is needed to increase further penetration this then is a game changing point. Currently the backup of choice is the traditional energy sources of pre-renewable era. As the penetration pushes intermittency boundaries then storage and or fossil fuel backup will significantly raise the cost of wind and solar. It is a farce to argue wind and solar cost keep coming down without acknowledging this situation.”
Exactly. I would also argue that solar and wind power are in an artificial low at present. Fossil fuel energy provides a sort of hidden subsidy that offsets the fact these energy sources require at least an order of magnitude greater material and energy investment than fossil or nuclear. When steel costs $300/tonne it is cheap to build something that needs lots of steel, even if it isn’t sustainable in the long-term.
Storing half of electricity to counter intermittency, roughly triples the final cost of a unit of electric power. Trying to store other forms on energy for end use (i.e. heat for space heating or cryogenic liquids for transport) would require huge new infrastructure and an unprecedented change in living arrangements.
Wind power in Europe is benefitting from very benign government policies that mean that someone else picks up the intermittency bill. Solar power from Chinese state owned enterprises is effectively dumped on 1st world nations.
Like all of us, Cloggie is vulnerable to believing what he wants to believe. Some of his goals are in conflict with each other. To hold off the US, Russian and Chinese empires, will require a wealthy economy with a lot of cheap excess energy. The very opposite of what Europe will have in the much anticipated 100% renewable energy economy.

The solution to pollution is dilution, therefore, more people will solve overpopulation.
The cost with no fossil fuels is going to be far higher than the cost with fossil fuels.
If you consider that diseases such as diphtheria, smallpox, tuberculosis, mumps, measles, rabies, are more or less under control worldwide, it is easy to see why there are more people. Influenza control is spotty at best, it could wreak havoc one day in the future.
You no longer have to wind up the parasite that is growing from your foot and the small stick can be discarded. Treatment for parasites is found. You don’t have to sit on your scrotum if you have elephantiasis of the scrotum, those days are gone, thanks to science and medicine.
Can’t ignore those facts, the discovery of fossil fuels to usable energy is a result of human progress in the study of science and medicine.
Oil is the cat’s meow, coal is the gravy.
When they aren’t there, the party is over.
The fun will just be starting.
All the more reason to drink.
Another gain in the human population again today, right around 200,000, so the answer must be dilution as the solution for pollution.
Beam me up.

Germany and Denmark have arrived at that point. Fortunately for them they can use their neighbors as “storage”, by simply sending it over the border. This practice is entirely backed by European legislation, that gives priority of renewable over fossil (as it should), much to the chagrin of the Dutch, who have to switch off their ultra-efficient gas-fueled power stations. Poles and coal, same story.
Nevertheless, substantial efforts to build up storage are underway:
Plants that will convert renewable electricity into hydrogen:
https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2017/12/28/700-mw-renewable-hydrogen-plant-to-be-built-in-france/
There is plenty potential of pumped-hydro storage capacity:
https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2017/11/19/world-record-pumped-hydro-storage-for-scotland/
Every NW-European country has or is in the process of building subsea cables to Norway, for hydro-storage purpose:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_Link
Holland was first with this one:
https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2013/06/15/norned/
Cables exist between UK-NL, DK-NO, GE-NO, etc. Increasing the integrated power area decreases the need for storage.
There is still a lot more hydro-storage potential in Norway:
https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/norway-wants-to-become-europes-battery/
But the biggest storage potential is H2/NH3 (power-to-gas). If you have hot water available, splitting water can be done with efficiencies larger than 100%.

Via the sea this would take 4 weeks extra.
Now here is a transport-lane the US navy and air force don’t control, a fact that unlikely escaped the attention of Chinese geostrategists. Travel-time 14 days. There is potential to shorten that to 10 days. This year 400-600 trains.

How do unlimited amounts of coal help you achieve a 100% renewable energy goal? If 100% renewable energy is what you are aiming to achieve, why would coal come into the discussion at all?
There are some who claim that there is not enough fossil fuel left to set up a renewable energy base. I hope and expect that we will never have to use that sub-sea coal.
It takes about 10 times more steel and concrete to generate a KW of power with wind energy than with a light water reactor.
For offshore projects you do not need concrete, just merrily hammer the monopile into the seabed. And once you have you steel structure in place, you can reuse it ad infinitum. Building a new wind tower from an old one takes ten times less energy than building a new one from iron ore. Oh and it is done in an electric furnace, running on renewable energy.
This is a consequence of intermittency and whilst there are solutions to the problem, one way or another, they cost a lot of money.
Intermittency can be solved using hydrogen/NH3 as storage medium as if it were fossil fuel.
You may ultimately find that you need a powerful military to prevent yourselves from being crushed between a Zionist-USA and a nationalist Russia
Not sure what this has to do with renewable energy. I expect that de Gaulle’s/Putin’s vision of Paris-Berlin-Moscow will materialize and that eventually white nationalists will succeed in seceding the Heartland from Washington in a decade or so max.

But if public figures speak their minds, their careers get terminated. Like this one:

“The 1929 crash marked the end of the ‘Roaring Twenties’. The era got its name from consumer and stock market booms driven by the automobile and building sectors. The gold standard and the neutralization of all gold purchases from abroad by the newly created central bank, Federal Reserve or Fed, controlled the consumer price inflation. Due to low inflation, Fed had only limited incentives to intervene on the speculation by increasing the short-term interest rates. The easy credit era was let to persist fueling the boom in the consumer durables, commercial property market, automobile industry and the stock markets…
Currently, we are in a situation where, according to several metrics, the stock market is the most over-valued in the history of the NYSE. The central banks, with their orthodox and unorthodox monetary policies, have fed the asset market mania for nine years now but, currently, they are in a tightening cycle. Moreover, the global economy is in a risk of a dramatic slowdown.
This indicates that the main components of the crash of 1929: an over-valued stock market, a central bank tightening cycle (higher interest rates) and a slowing economy are almost all present in the US. We will thus soon know how well the history rhymes.”

2017 documentary from an “unsuspected source”, the solid Marxist organisation, the BBC (Bolshevik Broadcasting Organisation).
The documentary is hosted by a black fellow who is smarter than he looks. And as usual black folk are less political correct than white folks, who are stranded in their self-defeating high-minded moral principles rooted in Christianity.
If you skip the usual stuff about KKK and slavery, the most interesting parts are its entirely correct conclusions:
1. The American Dream is dead. White America is pessimistic to the core. You just have to read the majority of the comments on this board, although most here hide their despair behind PC comments on “peak oil” in order to avoid demographics.
2. The victory of DJT had less to do with MAGA or “the economy”, but more with the forbidden topic of race, the deep desire to halt further demographic decline and the fear to become minority in their former own lands.
3. The documentary ends with a pessimistic note on the future of multiculturalism in America (not much future). America is more segregated than ever.
This documentary confirms from a PC source all the signals I picked up over the last decade, mostly through the internet. It is not difficult to predict how this is going to end. Segregation will be lifted to its ultimate level: secession and the creation of a white ethno-state on former US soil. It is not entirely impossible that this will happen without bloodshed, like in the case of the USSR, but it is less likely so. You can abolish a useless leftist economic system like central planning with one stroke of a pen, endure a very difficult decade and you’re good. In the case of America… you can’t abolish a mixed population with a stroke of a pen. Expect a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth, comparable to what happened in Yugoslavia and Ukraine, but this time on a much larger scale.
For continental Europeans these are important signals. President Trump has already clearly send the message to the Europeans that they need to learn to stand on their own feet (again), for starters by beginning to increase their defense budgets. They will, don’t worry.
https://www.rt.com/news/387313-us-losing-leadership-eu-mogherini/
But far more important for Europe is to anticipate what is going to happen after Trump, the “American Gorbachev” and grave-digger of the US empire and eventually the US itself. We (the 700 million Europeans of PBM) need to be prepared to intervene with a massive force (if necessary complemented by Chinese forces although you would want to avoid that) and help the coming devolution to proceed with as little suffering and bloodshed as possible.

“Europeans that they need to learn to stand on their own feet (again), for starters by beginning to increase their defense budgets. They will, don’t worry.”
LMFAO, all Eurotards can do is lazy luxuries of eating good food and drinking wine on their many holidays while the Americans do the heavy lifting of your security.
“We (the 700 million Europeans of PBM) need to be prepared to intervene with a massive force (if necessary complemented by Chinese forces although you would want to avoid that) and help the coming devolution to proceed with as little suffering and bloodshed as possible.”
Complete fantasy of a deranged old man living in a cocoon of mental illness.

“No you are running from any meaningful discussion, like you will run to Italy eventually, with the tail between your legs.”
I am bitch slapping you daily here pussy and that is clear by the fact it take 3 of you and you still can’t put me down. What a bunch of wimps. Notice how 3rd world has retired since I showed up. As for Italy I may end up there someday. I have a wonderful place to go that blows away your stupid smelly dutchy lowland that will be inundated by the sea. If I go there it is because I can. You have nobody and nowhere to go.
makati1 on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 6:56 am
Cloggie, Davy live on a planet not remotely like Earth. It is a make-relive place where he is someone important and educated and the most intelligent. Of course, it is a planet with one person, himself. It called “Delusion” and exists only in his mind.
Davy on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 7:31 am
3rd world quit showing how stupid you are. If you have been to Europe then it was in an airport. Your extent to knowing Asia is westernized Makati, Manila and your little backwater Pacific coast 3rd world villiage. You are a fake and a fraud and for the last 5 years I put you in your place daily. That place in an intellectual elderly walker where you need extremist like greggie to walk you around. IOW a stupid loud mouth senile old man.
GregT on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 12:11 pm
“I moderate your extremist lies, exaggerations, and embellishments. I keep things honest here and I prevent this place from becoming an extremist magnet. You are your groupies are dedicated to sucking in scum. You are a dirty nasty extremist peddling an emotional agenda that is based on your failed life in the US. With the nedernazi it is shame for his Eurotard past. With greggie it is a profound hate for the US he is jealous of. You are all a pack of lying fools. This is an affront to the truth. I am here for the truth you are not. You are a binary creature looking for victory at any cost. You are a “LIE”.
A dedicated team of psycho-analysts could spend their entire careers studying you Davy. You are one severely messed up dude, and getting worse by the day.
GregT on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 1:29 pm
“Greggie, 3rd world is spreading Russian disinformation you better do something about it. LMFAO at the dumbasses.”
Why is it Davy, that when you constantly link to Zerohedge it’s the gospel truth, yet when makati1 links to Zerohedge it’s Russian disinformation?
Which is it Davy? You can’t have it both ways buddy.
Davy on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 2:20 pm
Stop it already greggie with the childish stalking and pricking and delusional rhetoric, already….dumbass. Lol. Oh and name calling.
Davy on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 2:23 pm
Stupid greggie can’t tell sarcasm and when he is being mocked. So I will let him know that I could give a shit about when 3rd world references the hedge. He is the one with his panties in a wad.
GregT on Sat, 28th Apr 2018 2:54 pm
“So I will let him know that I could give a shit about when 3rd world references the hedge.”
“The Hedge”. You just can’t make this stuff up. Absolutely priceless, and Davy, makati1 is an American citizen. America isn’t totally 3rd world, yet.

You are a rabid Anti Semite! You want another holocaust! You want to see ethnic cleansing.
You are probably confusing Greg with somebody else.LOL
Let’s have a discussion about you first, shall we.
So you want to annihilate Russia? You have said that repeatedly. That makes you a mass murderer wannabee. And so does the rest of your tribe. Furthermore you admitted that 9/11 was a false flag. Which if course could only have been carried out by the Mossad.
What do you think normal sane people should do to you and your tribe?
Well?

How do you like your holohoax this time? Medium or well done?
