He blundered on move 14 where he pushed his f-pawn to f3 instead capturing your pawn on b5 with his knight. That would have allowed a queen exchange and a continuation. But by allowing you to capturing his c-pawn on your next move lead to the pin and loss of a white piece. Here is how Rybka continued against Prodeo (which is no slouch) after 13. ... b5.

Yeah, 14. Nxb5 was the move to make.

How about Rybka vs. Rybka in that position? I bet it would have been a draw.

If you copy the above to clipboard, you can paste it into Winboard and see the game play out.

This game I called a draw because only Kings and a single white pawn on the h-column were left by move 57. There's no way white can promote the pawn. That ending always ends in a draw. This sort of thing always seems to happen when you play a chess computer against itself.

But look at the scores in brackets throughout; White is always scored ahead, at one point by as much as +1.34, but for the most part White scored up by about +.50.

Well, white does start with a slight edge. If black can equalize out of the opening he can consider it a success.

In other news our group has pretty much finished off Team New England.

I looked at your opening.

I guess that the way the back row was arranged, Black could only castle on one side. So, therefore, you aimed your bishops at that side right from the get go.

What's the rule about Castling in Fisher random chess?

Castiling is weird but you can always castle either way. The rule to remember is, no matter how the kings & rooks are arranged the final castled position always looks how it would in regular chess (also, pieces can be in the corner just not in the way). In the game I showed I could have castled queen side at any time from move 5 on.

Pleased with this win from my local chess club's quad-tourney (I won my quad for $25 :)).

[Event "ATKM Quad"]
[Site "ATKM"]
[Date "2009.8.20"]
[White "Narz"]
[Black "Daniel"]
[Result "1-0"]
[WhiteELO "1677"]
[BlackELO "1730"]

Bd3 f6 9. Nf3 c5 10. Nb5 Na6 11. c3 cxd4 12. cxd4 fxe5 13. fxe5 Nb4 14. O-O
Nb6 15. Nd6 Nc6 16. Qc2 h6 17. Bh7+ Kh8 18. Nh4 Rxf1+ 19. Rxf1 Nxd4 20. Ng6+ Kxh7 21. Nf8+ 1-0

Notes : at move nine I took about six minutes to move, I was thinking of bringing my queen out but saw no definitive attack so went with Nf3 instead. 10. Nb5 may have been an inaccuracy. Move 13, 14 & 15 (black's three knight moves) really allowed me to develop initiative. You just can't get away with moves like that when your opponent has more space! After 16. Qc2 black doesn't have time to go back to b4 with his knight, he's got threats to worry about. Probably best is g6 for black after which I can play (maybe) a6 & I'll have a better game but the more "natural" looking h6 gave me a beautiful combination. :)

Game Of The Century Nowadays, Grandmaster play is so dry and technical. Not very interesting. Bobby Fischer was flamboyant and jazzy. His play was bold and unpredictable. He was probably the best chess player who ever lived. Amazing sacrifices and brilliant play at 13 years old. Narz, maybe you remember a game I told you about where white sacrificed every piece he had except his knight with which he checkmated black. It was recorded in a book called The Golden Treasury Of Chess. Black had just about all of his pieces and lost to that knight. Astonishing game.

When I was in College I had a roommate who kicked my butt in chess. I spent a summer studying the Golden Treasury of Chess. As I recall, there was no commentary, just the games. When I returned to College I kicked that room mate's butt. There is something about just watching brilliant play that sinks in. Bobby Fischer's Game Of The Century that I posted involved a fantastic Queen Sacrifice against a world famous grandmaster when he was just 13. That is play that could never sink in for me or just about anyone else either for that matter. One can improve one's game by studying play like that but never come even close to that level of genius. It is like swimming. One could swim 8 hours a day and never come close to Michael Phelps. That's not to say that it isn't worthwhile to get better. One does what one can.

I changed the expletives. Are they OK now? I could change it to behind or rear end or derriere or rump or bum or buttocks or posterior.

I won my quad again last night (and came off with $40 this time :)).

Well done, Narz. Too bad there isn't much money in chess. You have to get to the very top to get any dough out of it. And yeah, you can't say Expletive deleted.. It's innocuous but some folks are fussy like that. Anyway, if you are at 1800 then I must be close too! Just need a killer instinct and a little more study and I'm there. (I like French Defense too. Exciting opening on either side. Guioco Piano is congested and boring. It's Italian for quiet game.)

Just a word to the wise, Narz: chess can easily become an obsession. I knew a guy who met and played against Walter Brown. He told me that Brown aged rapidly and looked worn out at a young age. I repudiated chess in my early 20's. And we all know what happened to Bobby Fischer. Be careful. It's a moth and flame deal. Can you see yourself playing 120 players simultaneously while blindfolded? The desire to be a grandmaster can become all-consuming. I've played against you and I can tell you that you will never be a grandmaster. A good player, certainly, but not the top of the heap of ambition. It isn't worth the effort anyway. Just a game. Besides, who marched two pawns straight down the middle on you? One move from victory and the only thing lacking was the killer instinct to win. I don't even have a rating.

btw, for those of you who don't follow the world of chess, Brown won more US championships in chess than anyone but Bobby Fischer himself. I once mentioned a guy who tried all summer one year to hustle me out of a hundred dollars. I finally got him to play his real game for 5 bucks. He was trying to play on my intellectual vanity. It was worth 5 bucks to me to show him what's what. heh heh. I knew he would beat me but it was worth the money. It was metaphorically like when Paul Newman got his thumbs broken in The Hustler after he was goaded into showing his real game. The guy I mentioned who tried to hustle me told me that he had an IQ of 186. Pretty smart, huh? Problem was that he told me that before trying to hustle me. That and he paid his way through college hustling chess and pool. I may not be that smart but I'm no dummy.

Anything can become an obsession. Overall chess is good for you, a few mad geniuses don't a trend make. The one GM I met was more well adjusted than the average kid his age (he is 19) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOZJCcUnw5Y

I don't hold any lofty notions of becoming a GM but if I can become an Expert (over 2000) before TSHTF I'll be happy. I think this is possible with a medium level of effort (1 hour a day or so). :)
