$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', 'D')id you get Winboard and did you get some chess engines working on it?

I did, very cool stuff, thanks for the links. Got me thinking about chess again after a very long hiatus. I still suck though, I downloaded the most retarded engine I could find (geko_043) and I have not beat it yet. (For revenge, I watch crafty rip it a new one!)

Very pretty! Thanks for that one. :)

I have a cheap version of Fritz & Chessmaster 9000 (got it for $5 plus $5 shipping on Amazon).

Until the last three years I was a Mac lover so I had a few freeware & shareware chess programs for Mac. I haven't tried any of the Windows free chess programs yet though. I may.

Do any do game analysis (point out tactical shots you missed)? I think you mentioned Ruffian did.

Not in the same way that Fritz does. But Fritz is a hassle to use compared to the simplicity of Winboard.

You can view a short piece of the mainline - 2 or 3 moves - and it will show a score. So, say you've got a position you're analyzing. For example, the score shows a -.35 - that means the machine has a small disadvantage. If you make a move and the score suddenly changes to -2.10 or something, you know you've made a stunning move. If the score changes to positive, that means the machine is now winning and you could have made a better move.

Of, course, you can turn all of that off if you don't want to be influenced.

I've got Fritz 9 I think. And I'd rather use Winboard!

I also have a HP 2215 Pocket PC that I bought cheap on eBay just so I could use PocketGrandmaster software. It comes with three different chess engines - Fruit is the strongest (impossibly strong chess engine). And I take it with me if I'm going to be waiting in a doctor's office or whatever.

I agree. I'm not a huge fan of Fritz. But I prefer to play humans and just let the computers critique my games, I just get more out of playing a fellow human.

I did download winboard though, and the tactics puzzles.

You ever play in any tournaments these days?

I've had the fantasy of studying a few hours a day for a year or so and then hitting one of the big tournies in Las Vegas and winning big in my division (Under 1600). A fun idea (and the extra $ would come in handy for PO prep) but dunno how realistic it is. Life can be very distracting.

Unless, we can a group of us, hang out distraction free in someone's bunker or mountain cabin and only study and play all day. Then emerge to represent PO.com and clean up in tournies all across the nation.

I'm not a fan of any chess engines. People on chessclub get a great thrill out of playing their chess programs against each other. I don't get it. Give me a simple game against a human opponent and I'm happy.

To each his own, I guess.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

They're great for chess puzzles, tactics and practicing openings and stuff like that which is what this thread has been about.

I bought an HP 2215 Pocket PC off eBay cheap just so I could play tactical positions against PocketGrandmaster when I'm waiting at a doctor's office or at the DMV or whatever.

That will come in useful when the gas lines stretch around the block.

I was into chess in my youth. My college roommate could beat me every time. So I spent a summer studying the Golden Treasury Of Chess which was a collection of fantastic chess games played through the centuries. One of them ended in an unbelievable series of sacrifices where the aggressor put his opponent in checkmate with his remaining knight. Totally astonishing. The defending player still had the Queen and rooks and sundry players but it only took that knight to seal the game. I beat that roommate every time after that summer of study. It would have been fun to play you, albente, when I was up there in San Luis Obisbo.

Anyone for the problem above?

Bumped this thread cause I'm starting a tourney on http://chess.com and thought it would be fun to play some people I "know". So let me know if you want to join. It's 18 games at once (double round robin so two games each against all nine opponents) at 5 days a move so will be kinda hectic but fun too.

I'm gonna open it to the chess.com "public" in a few days but right now it's invite only so if you wan to get in let me know. :)

That is ONE amazing post Golem! Congratulation for the effort. Simply awesome!

And yes, Penultimate Man, we should have played a round of chess while in San Luis Obispo. I am back in good old Europe by now and disregarding the decelerating Gulf stream it is One good place to be..

Christ I hate chess. It's sort of a strategic trip to the dentist. But maybe I could get into Chess boxing. Yes.

Yeah, I've seen that before.

When I was a kid I always wanted to box but now I'm glad I grew up in the suburbs where I didn't have access. I've suffered enough head trauma as it is.
