$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Narz', 'Y')eah, I've seen that before.

When I was a kid I always wanted to box but now I'm glad I grew up in the suburbs where I didn't have access. I've suffered enough head trauma as it is.
I debated this with myself, Narz, because we met and talked at length I felt I owed this to you. I saw some pretty stupid and crazy behavior by my elders. It didn't do me any good. The best you can do is to forgive. It may seem impossible and people are crazy, but there's no better choice.

Yeah, thanks PMS. The only logical option is forgiveness (or at least mostly "forgotness"). "It's water over the dam" as my mother would say (I'm sure peakniks will enjoy that expression  ). Our only point of power is the present (even in "planning for the future").

Here's a typical puzzle I picked at random from "1001 Chess Tactics"
Image

There's an imporant tactical move that would be obvious to a chess master but might not be to we ordinary mortals. You could play this position against a chess computer and fudge and fumble around til you get it. But even if you as a novice player find the right move, there's a good chance that Ruffian or one of the other really strong programs would just walk all over you anyway!
I don't see how that works, black queen takes knight. White's threat is gone, queen exchange is forced and black is up two pieces

Thanks PMS. I haven't really played in over 40 years. I joined the chess club when I was in the 8th grade as a complete novis. At the end of the last semester the chess club held a double round robin tournament in which I somehow managed to advance on the winner's side. A seventh grade girl advanced on the loser's side. We were closeted literally in a janitor's closet for the championship. I only had to win one game to be champ. She handily beat me two games in a row. It was the greatest humiliation of my young life. The boys rode me even into high school and on.

Since then I have had a love/hate relationship with chess. It has scarred me badly. I don't know if I will ever totally recover.

LOL, that's a good one. :-D At least you got beat by a girl, I can't beat my Radio Shack chess computer and it's not even alive.

I'm hosting a fairly large online tournament for another forum I post at. If anyone wants to play badly enough they can join that forum & then join chess.com & send me a message (Narz) & I'll send you an invite. :)

In other Chess news, the World Championships are going on right now & so far India's Vishy Anand is crushing Russia's Vladimir Kramnik, with Anand ahead 5-2 (3 wins for Anand & 4 draws with Kramnik yet to win a single game).

My favorite game in the series so far was game 5

Hey Pretorian, I haven't played at yahoo chess in years (I did 9-10 years ago when I first started playing). I use chess.com's Live chess feature these days but mostly I play correspondence cause I play a much better game when I can take a day or two to consider my moves. :)

I have about 1400 or so games played at yahoo. Curious thing for me is that my ranking goes from 1200 to 1550 and then back to 1200, and then back up. Will check out this chess.com

Yeah, I know how that is. Frustrating. That's why I quit speed chess & try to play mostly slow &/or coorespondence chess these days. :)

I don't like speed chess either. It's not natural. Excessive pondering can be a drag and border on indecision, but the game needs to take it's own pace.

I'm on a game forum that has a chess mod in it, I really like playing the other members. Maybe I'll check out chess.com, sounds fun.

Sounds good, let me know if you want to join my tournament. Technically it's for CivFanatics.com forum members but you could always join & post a couple of things & then enter the tourney. :) That goes for anyone with interest. I could always start a seperate peakoilers tourney if there is even more interest.

I started a chess tournament for peakoilers

Unread postby Narz » Sun 28 Dec 2008, 19:53:56

Peak Oilers Tourney

Was gonna bump albente's thread but figured I'd start a new one. Open to all skill levels. Double round robin, groups of three (two games each against both your opponent's in your group, one against each at a time). You have five days per move so if you're offline for a few days, no problem. I think you have up to 30 days of vacation time so if you know you're gonna be offline for more than 5 days make sure to check that you're on vacation & you won't lose on time.

I know PMS is a player (who's got enough time on his hands to join in ;)) & I already got RedStateGreen hooked. :o

I'm gonna post this over on Savinar's site too. If anyone wants to post it on any other peakoil sites feel free. :)

I probably won't join in (I'm in a bunch of tournaments already & I have a lot of RL stuff on my plate) but I might.
