Man, with all of you picking the ATL to be the first to do the big "R", looks like I'm going to have just get me a rocking chair and a great big ol' tub of popcorn and watch the cool orange glow outside. Sure is gonna be a fun show to watch! :-D

Gonna work on my bugout kit some this afternoon, though, just in case...ya know.

I suppose I can take small comfort for having a residence just on the outside of the Perimeter, as opposed to being on the inside...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'R')evi, your examples just proved my point. Name one white riot in the US since the 1960s. One. The closest thing might have been the "Battle in Seattle," but that was a political protest that resulted in zero deaths and minimal property damage, not people burning down their own neighborhoods and murdering each other in the street by the dozen. Reality is very politically incorrect.
As for the French Revolution, that was more than a couple years ago.

I think there has to be a definite "trigger" moment, like the Rodney King situation in Atlanta in the 1990's. That caused riots because it was a moment when people said "Oh Hell no!" and got mad.

The economy grinding to a halt won't trigger it. Empty grocery stores will. Also, keep in mind that there are still large numbers of people here in the US who don't even have bank accounts. I used to come across them in one of my previous jobs. Once you over draw one or two accounts, no bank will touch you.

So I think we are in for an increase in crime (coupled with a decrease in police budgets and the release of some of the "non-violent" prison population) but maybe not riots until we see food shortages or power/ water outages.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'W')hat qualifies as a "massive riot"? My bet would go to America's great riot city - Los Angeles - if there were anything race related in the situation. Which there isn't.

Riot? Well there are a hundreds of definitions, so we need to have one based on actual destruction.

I suggest we define 'riot' as:
1) Mass civil unrest, actual street actions, resulting in a minimum of $10 million dollars in damage to buildings, vehicles.
2) At least one person dead.
3) At least 10 vehicles or structures completely burned.

This would eliminate the carnage most large cities routinely experience. With this, my vote is for LA.

I thought I would be real clever and look up overpopulated states with large ethnic populations which will be hit hard by the financial crisis with a large difference between rich and poor, then look up the largest city.

It's LA again!
April 2008 Global Population: 6.8 billion
April 2010 Global Population: 7 billion
April 2012 Global Population: 7.2 billion

Home sweet home, for me. There was a mini riot here in a line for food stamps or some such thing recently. Blah.

I understand your pain. That's why a 'riot' would require all three. Paris is my second bet.

I think that Paris has riots every night. The government issued a directive to the domestic media that it was illegal to cover them after the massive infatada (sp) a few years back.

But I'm not trying to nitpick. I've always believed that social cohesion was much more fragile than we're led to believe. In sum, your three points are bang on.

While I can understand the obvious nominations for LA and ATL, I think a serious oversight has been made. Miami. Nuf, said...

Detroit has been in a low scale riot continually for the last few years. Hardly a night goes by where something isn't burned down or looted. The last supermarket closed back in April. Not that anyone gives a hoot about Detroit.

I would bet on Las Vegas being the next city to burn. It is a useless city full of useless greedy people living in a desert.

No riots in Miami. Just mass gangland murder from Columbian drug lords. Mass gangland murder is not rioting, have to treat that seperately.

Following the example of Amerika and Italy, Germany would deploy military in the streets:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ERLIN (AP) — Germany's governing coalition partners want to change the constitution to allow for military deployment within the country if needed to combat terrorism, officials said Monday.
The proposal would allow use of the military only if police are overwhelmed and cannot properly respond to a situation themselves.
"It is not to be used generally, but only in very specific cases," Interior Ministry spokeswoman Daniela-Alexandra Pietsch said.

My bet is Atlanta. Only because:
- The current oil shortage.
- Water shortages in past summers.
- Geological Location.

My second guess would be Vegas or Detroit. Detroit's been caught in a hail storm for a long time. How long before they go nuts. Up here in the sin cities I expect things to be tame for the next six months. It will be winter and people will stay inside.

I just hope LA runs out of gas before it runs out of food. With no gas, that city's locked down and done for. No way for the minorities to get out, they'll all kill each other.

It just remains to be seen whether the mexicans advance further into US territory or retreat. I bet they advance, take the southwest, and consolidate into their new lands.

MSU 2000s(et al) riots. Millions of dollars in damage, hundreds of arrests, fires, etc. White (mostly) college kids.

Definitely NOT NYC. They have too many soldiers here. There are guys with assault rifles posted at every major subway station.

Just walking through grand central the other day, we had to file past 3 soldiers in full gear with these military dogs barking the entire time. It reminded me of a scene from a WWII concentration camp. Martial law is more probable in NYC than rioting imho.

I'm originally from NYC. While I can imagine having soldiers positioned in Grand Central Station, Times Square, Union Square and a few other major hubs, I cannot imagine how there could be enough soldiers stationed to cover every station through the system out in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

I suppose like with the Transit Police, perhaps they have a couple of soldiers on each train. However, in a riot situation they would be quickly overwhelmed.

However, I don't think NYC is the first to riot. On US soil, I would go with LA or ATL. Due to the gas issues, ATL probably first, but not by much.
