Don't underestimate Miami. It is way too crowded there, and has lots of degenerates.

LA should be fun to watch. All the poor people will riot into the rich neighborhoods.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbrovont', 'M')SU 2000s(et al) riots. Millions of dollars in damage, hundreds of arrests, fires, etc. White (mostly) college kids.

Sports "riots" are pretty lightweight affairs compared to real riots. The worst of the MSU riots I can find was in 1999. From Wikipedia:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t would seem that the riot began on March 27, 1999, in Cedar Village. The students began by burning couches and jumping over the main bonfire in Cedar Village (although there were many small fires in the area). Some women began to expose their breasts as the crowd chanted for them to show themselves. It was similar to the crowd's chant of, "F&^% Duke!" Eventually, the first car was burned in the fire. It was a grey Chevy Nova. The police would march in riot gear and release canisters of tear gas and then march out. The crowd would move on to another location and by the end of the night 8 cars had been turned over.

Besides that damage, the students attempted to turn over the ambulance that came to help a burn victim of the bonfire. In addition, store window fronts were bashed in, including the Taco Bell window where a student made himself a taco.

Approximately 130 students were convicted for involvement in the March 27th MSU riot. Of those, over 50 were MSU students.

So 8 cars turned over, some breasts bared, a couch burned, a few windows broken, a taco stolen, and 130 arrested. That sounds like a slow night in South Central LA. What do you think Ayoob?

I want to change my vote to Detroit after LA and NYC. Detroit is the closest thing we have to Haiti in the US. But is there anything left to loot there?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vision-master', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'R')evi, your examples just proved my point. Name one white riot in the US since the 1960s. One. The closest thing might have been the "Battle in Seattle," but that was a political protest that resulted in zero deaths and minimal property damage, not people burning down their own neighborhoods and murdering each other in the street by the dozen. Reality is very politically incorrect. As for the French Revolution, that was more than a couple years ago.

Fair enough. But I don't think sports "riots" are real riots. Just a bunch of drunken frat boys and sorority tarts causing a ruckus. Easily contained by generous applications of tear gas and a bit of head smashing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Novus', 'D')etroit has been in a low scale riot continually for the last few years. Hardly a night goes by where something isn't burned down or looted. The last supermarket closed back in April. Not that anyone gives a hoot about Detroit.

How would anybody be able to tell the difference between the way Detroit looks pre-riot, from would look like post-riot?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wisconsin_cur', 'P')ick your city one and all. When four moderators/administrators agree that a particular city is the first to a) riot and b) due to economic factors we will declare the winners.
Each winner will receive an private message with a link to a picture of a cute doggie from me with which to right click and save as desktop to remind you and yours of your "hot nose" (aka sage insight).
Feel free to add your guess whenever you want but to be eligible for the prize you must enter your wager before 11 am Wall Street time on Friday October 10 or Twelve hours before the first news report of riots, whichever comes first.

I am going to go with Lahore, Pakistan

Those who have been willing to name just one city and thus take their chances and getting a link to a cute doggie photo in their peakoil.com private message box so far are:

Nothing race related yet!! Give it a little time for the Jacksons and sharptons of the world to start talking about the "hard times" are just a way for whitey to keep the poor downtrodden black man down. Then you will have your racial aspect.

OR

Let some of the white supremacist start scapegoating the "welfare class" as causing the massive govt debt and leading to this mess. Either way race will get drawn into it IMHO
It is not the strongest of species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.

i'm wondering what state will be the first to default on their debt.
Bloomberg on California debt California has $51 billion in debt. think that will all be repaid ?

a new scam - re-insurance for state debt where the insurer collects the premiums ... and then goes BK. when Orange County went bankrupt, the yuppies did not riot. if think there's probably some sociological statistical effect where sub-cultures that have previous history of riots, lots of guns, and hammered hard by the lack of jobs/ not educated for the jobs that are there, are most at risk of renewed efforts in this direction.

in other words, if i was working for Department of Homeland Security, i would allocate resources for the area of LA where South Central meets up with Hollywood, right around Florence & Normandie, near the Temple theatre where they used to hold the Oscars.

there's been news reports in Berkeley of store hold-ups at Starbucks - where a guy walks in with a gun & cleans out the store & the customers, or as much robbing as they can do in 30 seconds. i think the question Michael Moore asked in Bowling for Columbine, why is the per capita homicide rate in the US 40 times higher than other civilized countries, will be modified in the course of "economic dislocation", that's the term Robert Hirsch used.

i don't keep too close of track of crime statistics. i think we will see generalized rise in property crime and violent crime, i have the feeling we already are. before a renewal of riots like the 1992 LA riots.

personally i think the FEMA camps we hear about are for an anticipated increase in the number of incarcerated persons, along with "immigration issues". what is the number right now, 1.4 million people in prison in the US. i think the US culture & government likes having a big prison system. there's money in it, or there was. i wonder if they'll release the non-violent drug offenders to make room for the rioters.

High gasoline prices lead to riots in Guinea

Postby wisconsin_cur » Wed 05 Nov 2008, 03:23:04

NY Times

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')AKAR, Senegal — Frustrated youths took to the crumbling streets of Guinea’s capital, Conakry, for the third day in a row on Tuesday, throwing stones and setting tires on fire in escalating protests over high gas prices.

The demonstrations, and the violent reaction they have provoked from the country’s security forces, have heightened tensions in a country that has been teetering on the brink of mass unrest for two years.

Witnesses said that at least one person was killed Monday when government troops shot at demonstrators, according to Reuters. But movement has been severely restricted in Conakry, and human rights advocates and aid groups fear that the toll is considerably higher.

“What is clear is there is a tremendous amount of frustration and anger in Guinea,” said Corinne Dufka, West Africa researcher for Human Rights Watch. “People protest to express that anger, and security forces respond with excessive force.”

On the surface the protests are about fuel prices, which have remained forbiddingly high despite slumping crude oil prices. The government announced on Saturday that it would reduce gas prices by 20 percent, to the equivalent of about $4.15 a gallon from more than $5, to quell simmering anger over the high cost of living, but Guineans had been expecting a deeper cut because crude oil prices had fallen more than 50 percent.

Can I get the input on some other mods as to if we have a winner?
Link
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')rotesters in Iceland's capital Reykjavik have clashed with police during a demonstration over the handling of the financial crisis. Several hundred protesters gathered outside the city's main police station to demand the release of a man jailed in a previous demonstration.
Five people were injured when police used pepper spray to disperse the group after some tried to storm the building.
Iceland faces a sharply contracting economy over the financial collapse. The group outside the police station broke away from a much larger group of several thousand people who had gathered outside parliament to demand the government's resignation.

I think it will be Los Angeles. That's where it has happened most. Southern California was hard hit in the subprime crisis. We have a lot of people there that now have nothing to lose.

I predict some time next summer.

I woudn´t know about cities, but the riot-risk is growing
Food Prices Will Rise, Causing Export Bans, Riots
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')Nov. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Food prices will rise next year, prompting a revival of protectionism from food-growing nations and risking a renewed bout of rioting, according to Jochen Hitzfeld, an analyst at UniCredit SpA in Munich.

“Agricultural commodities will outperform the broad commodity indices in 2009,” Hitzfeld wrote in a research note this week. “If key crop-producing countries then impose export bans again and speculators drive up prices via physical stockpiling and futures contracts, new food unrest is even conceivable in the second half of 2009.”

The CHART OF THE DAY shows food prices for the past 10 years as measured by an index compiled by UBS AG and Bloomberg that tracks at least 13 foodstuffs, including wheat, soybeans, sugar, cocoa and coffee. The index has declined 35 percent since peaking in July.

“The prices of many agricultural commodities are now clearly below their production costs,” Hitzfeld wrote. “We expect the coming year to bring a cutback in area under cultivation as well as a decline in the yield per hectare.”
