US House of Representatives
If anyone cares to read the actual bill, you will see the following:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '(')3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program; and
which does not say squat about the 4 million barrels of crude oil that they export
from Iran but only about the imports
into Iran of refined products. We all know, from our frequent reading of PO.com, that Iran has very limited refining capability and is a net importer of refined products. They get these imports from their neighbors, and this resolution means squat to them.
So, in essence, this is a lot of blah blah posturing by Gary Ackerman of New York, and is 100% pandering because it is election year.
This guy, who represents Queens and Long Island, introduces some sort of ant-Arab andi-Persian resolution roughly every 4 months, because he is one of the most heavily Jewish congressional districts in the country, and also is heavily involved in south Asian issues, because his district is one of the most heavily South Asian in the country.
The reason it has 169 sponsors is that there are enough people that need to go back to their districts and say that they favor tough negotiating against Iran, but not an outright attack, but not do anything that will substantially hurt the economy.
So this thing will go to committee, it will hang out and do nothing for a few months, and even if it somehow makes it to the floor and passes, it is an "urging" or a "demanding" and has no foundation in law, and even if it did, Bush would not hesitate to ignore it if he felt like it.
So this amounts to nothing.
I have not investigated the lunatic fringe website this came from, but it is probably full of this wacko stuff.
The frequent viewers of PO.com have nothing to worry about from this particular resolution.
