$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Battle_Scarred_Galactico', 'U')nless we plan on becoming a one party state (I know we're on the way), all these measures will get voted out eventually, thats what democracy is about.

It depends on how the majority feels and how strongly about the issue doesn't it ? A long time ago the local jurisdiction banned open burning of your trash and leaves etc. Some were not happy. If a majority were not happy the politicians would have been voted out perhaps.
But it seems that most agreed that while they found it convienent to burn their leaves (on their own property), it was worth the better air quality and reduced danger of fires spreading to not be allowed to burn them.

And at European fuel prices it will only cost you the equivalent of $180 to $220 a tank full to fill it up! Why get only one? I understand Arnold, as in Governor of California, has six!

you've been seriously miseducated if you think the europeans are eco friendly. Apart from that, you just sound jealous.
Also in the light of jevon's paradox it really doesn't matter much what car you drive, we're going to burn every last drop of oil anyway and for the same reason it really doesn't matter to the environment.
I'll just stick to my bicycle though...

Tuike, you’ve only seen one? But you live in a country of smart people. I ride past three of these things on my bicycle in the parking lot at my work everyday (none of these people make more $ than me, I honestly don’t know how they afford them!). And I see them on the freeways every time I actually drive my 20 year old Nissan pickup (about once a week. I’m still weaning myself from a 36 year habit of driving!).

I've seen a yellow H2 carrying advertising for that dealership in Manchester city centre, usually parked outside a gym. I've also seen a black H2 limo around that part of town too. Those are the only Hummers I've seen in the UK so far. I just can't see this becoming anything more than a noveau riche toy. It's cheaper to buy a Jag or Merc and be spared the obscene hand gestures cast by every passer-by under the age of 30. Those things just scream "Money, no class" or "Mid-life crisis", I reckon they're going to lose their cool long before they get any market penetration. They're just too late for the party.

Oh, the one I saw was also parked near a gym. It was black in colour and it had painted large text on it which were "Hummer" and "H2".
What's the deal parking Hummers near gyms? I don't get it. I would think those attending gym would be more interested if there were bicycles parked outside it.
edit: I checked the price at the importers website, the pricing begins at 98900 euros, ($130000) including tax. No one can afford that.

Maybe that's their target demographic, 30-something stock market millionaire-pretender who can afford to blow a couple of thousand £ or € per year on an exclusive gym membership he only uses two times a week, seeking a new conspicuous status symbol to suggest he has more money than he has actually got. After all, the Bang & Olufsen home cinema was sooo 2003, and that sushi place with the naked women as tables is but an unfashionable memory.

They're welcome to the damn things.

In a Washington Post interview, Ron DeFore, spokesman for SUV owners of America makes the case why SUV's are not dead yet
Give my SUV some R-E-S-P-E-C-T!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or millions of buyers, SUVs are not a fashion statement. People buy them for four-wheel drive, for towing capacity. There are 20 million things in this country that need to be towed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')nvironmentalists who want to reduce the safety of vehicles say they are doing it for the health of the human race. But people dying on the road has to do with the health of the human race. You might believe in [global warming] 110 percent, but it's still theoretical. The known deaths of car accidents are just as important as theoretical deaths.

He's not a finite resource denier. He has a solution...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he real solution is a world in which people can have their big honkin' SUVs and have all the power they want, but . . . not running on petroleum. . . .

Ahhh, that makes me feel better.

Do the things than need to be towed need to exist?

No things, no need to tow them. Simple.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('trespam', 'E')uropeans are already paying $4-$5 per gallon and they've not come crashing down. I'm willing to bet that we'll make through $5 and even through $7/gallon. Speculative bubbles will unwind--but hey, that's the way it goes. The world made it through the great depression, WWII, and I'm not going to buckle under and head for the hills because--heaven help us--oil is $7/gallon.

Humm? $7 gal. That would be about $112 to fill my small truck. Figuring I could get by with two fills a Month = $225. Of course you got to figure total energy (heating cooling) + food costs that would go along with $7 gal gas. I say, if you have no debt, no kids & two incomes totaling $100,000 year - you would do fine. I find it hard to image the average Joe-6-pack to be even close.........

The guy who wrote this article basically says that if everyone drove SUVs, the death rate from highway accidents would decrease. Would not the carnage from two SUVs smacking each other at 60 mph be just as great as that from two small cars in a head-on or T-bone collision?
In our city, I've seen a few brave souls driving Smart cars amongst the majority of vans, SUVs and trucks on our streets. To do that, I think a person would have to be dead serious about defensive driving. But even if we all drove large vehicles, I can't imagine deaths from serious accidents being any less. Isn't there a physics law that would support this?

SUVs could make great housing, at least a place to sleep, as more people are foreclosed out of their houses. In the capitalist future, we'll see empty houses with their former residents camped out in their SUVs on the street in front.
