I'm (mildly) curious how a real Hummer would do. H2's just a Chevy Tahoe with custom sheetmetal...

It would do worse as it would get stuck in the first hairpin corner.
Powerwise it is much better equipped than the H2, but the Hummer is simply much too large to drive anything than wide open roads and flat terrain.

how about hurling manure over the fence of the golf course, it would hit a similar kind of people?

I've found old rusting T's up here in the mountains in places a mule would not want to go. I don't know how they did it. Must have been one helluva car.

Interesting, I have never heard of VW's electric Golf. I wonder if the Golf EV was only sold in Europe. The closest thing I have ever seen is the Volts Wagon conversion for the VW Rabbit. I have often though that such a kit would be nice in a Jetta wagon. Aah the wagon... the efficient are practical predecessor to the SUV. :)

Edwards: Let's give up SUVs

Unread postby coyote » Wed 29 Aug 2007, 13:07:51

Well, I think Edwards may have just counted himself out of the race:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')AKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group Tuesday that he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.
“I think Americans are actually willing to sacrifice,” Edwards said during a forum held by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. “One of the things they should be asked to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles.”
The former North Carolina senator was asked specifically if he would tell them to give up their SUVS, he said, “Yes.”

MSNBC: Edwards: Americans should give up their SUVs
...standing ovations from the IAMAW notwithstanding. If peak oil strikes before the primaries, then John may look prophetic. Otherwise, Joe McSixpack will not jump on board this one.

Translation
"I think all Americans except me are actually willing to sacrifice, and will if I'm elected"
The guy builds a huge house, not even energy neutral, not even extra insulation, no solar, no nothing. Bush has a far more enviromentally friendly home in Texas.
Our state flag motto in North Carolina translated is "to be, rather than to seem" our ex Senator's motto is "to seem, rather than to be"

American's give up SUVs? Yeah that will happen alright. The last politician that suggested that almost got lynched. Okay, not really but he sure as hell didn't get elected.

Give them up? No. Won't ever happen.
Make them more fuel efficient? Have to. Smaller, more efficient diesels, the next generation of hybrid vehicles, higher CAFE standards that apply to fleet vehicles as well, hell yeah.

SUVs are a lifestyle. Many of us that have them usually need them - big families, work equipment to haul around, etc. I'm pretty confident that if made more efficient, more people would buy SUVs. Imagine moms not banging their heads as they load Cade and Austin and a cartload of Whole Foods into a monster SUV that gets 45mpg like the Volkswagen TLD did.

So haircut who hides behind wife's skirt suggested that. It won't fly of course. Niether will a reality of cheap fuel-efficient monster trucks.

I really don't think that's such a controversial stance. If he said we need to give up private vehicle ownership, that would have been ballsy.

Edwards seems to be an opportunistic and insincere clod, but the entire premise of this site, is that PO ultimately doesn't offer you any personal choice whether you want to run an SUV, or not - or whether (once the consequences have had time to percolate through society) you'll still actually have a home/job to drive to and from in it. That's one good thing about raising CAFE standards: the only way to get the populace to accept enforced higher efficiency standards is to 'trojan horse' it, make it look like an attack on the big rich evil auto companies, without mentioning that the costs will be deferred back to us. Telling people to give up their SUVs won't work nearly as well as simply pricing them out of the market.

Edwards: America should 'sacrifice' the SUV

Unread postby TheDude » Fri 31 Aug 2007, 18:03:46

Yeah, right. Listening to informed remarks from sheeple on the radio. "I need the room!" "What about crash protection!" "Hey, he drives an SUV! Hypocrite!" Those things are the studio apartments of the future.

'Climate goal unreachable' -"all buy SUV's"

Unread postby KevO » Mon 10 Dec 2007, 07:42:46

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e will still have to invest in wind farms and solar and according to Gaia theorist and the New Agers' guru James Lovelock, heavily in nuclear but this has nothing to do with helping the planet but helping ourselves because very simply we have an oil demand/supply problem that is never going to go away and we will need alternatives to power our homes.
Transportation is another matter however.
Cars and lorries don't run on nuclear, wind or solar power so at least the oil decline will eventually help the planet and ironically the sooner the oil is gone the better (in the long run) for Mother Nature which leads us to the rarely unspoken reality that conserving energy is like a lingering death for the Earth.
So could the 'green solution' really be that we all buy SUV's?

That theory does not run IMO.

The slower we use up the oil, the more chance/time we have to switch to alternatives. Also, using oil in SUVs wastes oil that could be used to make wind turbines etc. Also, using up oil sat a slower rate gives the ecosystem time to recover.

That's true from a peak oil perspective but probably not from a save the planet 'green' one.
