Well,

other than the constant butting in and cutting off in midsentence by Art,I thought it was a great interview.

Thanks Matt. You did a good job of explaining the situation in plain English(when you were able).

Now I have a voice to go with your name/posts. :)

Good job, Matt. It sounds like Art is definitely onboard.

Thanks loopy. Very kind of you to post the interview. I don't have an am radio in the house (except the clock radio which was being used) and it was nice to be able to listen to the audio this morning.

Matt, you did an excellent defense of peak oil. It's nice to hear Art is on the same page too.

Great job, Matt! You made your points well. I tuned in at 1:00 a.m. at work. One hour is not nearly enough to cover everything, though, is it - you could probably spend 15 minutes answering each question posed by Art. I like that he persisted in clearing up the abiotic oil thing. I wonder why he thinks bicycles will not be embraced in a big way...hmmm, maybe because the population is getting older or the commutes to work are too long, I guess.

You covered a lot of information. I just wish there had been time for listeners to call-in with questions!

Very good! I'm so glad you refused to guess a future price of gas. I guess when Matt Simmons does it it makes headlines but you are exactly right that it can be almost anything depending on how the economy responds.

Also, liked the "love your child or your car" choice. It's so true.

Thanks to Loopy for posting the link. I listened to the whole show this morning; the AM station locally doesn't run AB until 1AM, too late.

Several really interesting things came out of the show for me. First, I'm not sure why AB and MS both so quickly dismissed the idea of Americans using bikes. I'm actually thinking of refurbishing my old ones (I've got a great old Schwinn 3-speed from the early seventies) for use locally. Visiting Beijing on business, even with all the increase in cars, one sees there are still legions of Chinese on their bikes, all seemingly using the same slow measured pace on their pedals.

What I do see changing is the number of people who go to their jobs, at all. It's simple insanity to move the large numbers of people in and out of city centers in the morning and evening. The model that comes to mind is Washington D.C., where I lived and worked for several years. Most of the jobs there simply don't require the person to physically be in any given space very often. Tele-commuting, the virtual office, etc., should get a huge boost from the peak. (Arguably, most of those jobs could just be eliminated, with savings for all!) And, with fewer desk jockeys showing up, the infrastructure load that supports their commuting also drops. People who really need to be somewhere to work will still do so, but that should really drop way back from the time clock industrial model we've kept as we have transited to a post-industrial world. I've mostly tele-commuted since 1995, and it's hard to imagine any other way for me, now.

But, the point MS and AB made about so many jobs not existing anymore at all is well taken. It's clear we're going to move into some totally different economic model for what constitutes gainful employment, post-peak. Much as I dislike welfare statism, I suspect something like that will briefly flourish here, just before the total collapse. There simply won't be a need for most people to "go to work," when the costs to occupy space somewhere outweigh the nominal rewards.

Yes, Loopy, thanks for the link to the Art Bell recording. Great job, Matt, very human and personal. Sometimes it's a bitch knowing your subject too well, which can slow reflexes. Like the difference between education and training. Keep up the good work!! Jeffrey Brown would have been a perfect complement to the discussion, with his emphasis on the export crisis.

That was a funny interview. Apart from Matts stuttering and some incorrect facts (uranium is a fossil fuel) it was hard to believe that wasn't some chat on TeamSpeak to the left there. Matt, you should drop by there more often to refine your debate skills, especially if you see yourself in a career as being a parrot for people/words on this forum.

And Matt agreeing that returning to bikes could stop the problem of peak oil is incorrect. There will still be a die off, even if tomorrow everyone used a bike instead of a car. Why? Two reasons, we are overpopulated, and there is too much "gasoline" employment keeping people alive. People call it waste, but it's being soaked up by millions of people and businesses. Make sure you mention that in your next interview Matt, and I won't mind too much when you don't mention the source.

I am still trying to figure out why he said Cheney was Prez...right out of the gate.

I almost turned it off and I am sure quite a few equated PO with Y2K hysteria and lunatics.

Beside that statement I thought it was ok, but WTF!!!

Bush - whether we like it or not is prez and Cheney is VPrez - that's just the way it is today.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Armageddon', '"')I have never understood the hostility towards you that I have seen on this site from a number of posters."

==============================

that's because 85% of people in general are douche bags and are not happy unless they are either bitching, moaning, complaining or are just not happy with their own lives and have to put down and belittle others to make themselves feel better.

I'd agree with that (though maybe not quite 85%). It's important to keep this in mind so you don't waste too much time with assholes. Granted we can all be assholes at times but it's good to pay attention to trends (if someone's consistently a jerk to someone else, chances are eventually they will be to you).

Divide and conquer. That's the game that's been played against us for years. There's not a nickel's worth of difference between the Bush-Cheney-Ites, and those who would replace them from the left. As a matter of fact, they're probably pursuing the only possible realpolitik path in the mid-east. Put large forces there, supposedly to "democratize" the undemocratizable Iraqis, but with the latent function of securing the oil fields in the region - at least as much as they can be secured.

It's sad to see people seize on the Demopublican versus Republicrat shadow show as something worthy of being given the time of day in these important issues.

It could have used more specific information about how things are going to get bad & what to do about it (besides moving to a rainforest with under 50 people per square mile).

It would appear that most politicians are marching to the same drummer with only a slightly different cadence. The major difference seems to be that of control not course.
