$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('KVOA', 'C')OLUMBUS, N.M. -- The U.S. Border Patrol is getting help from the U.S. Army to slow illegal immigration along New Mexico's southern border. Armored vehicles from a reconnaissance squadron based in Fort Lewis, Wash., were stationed along a 20-mile stretch of N.M. 9 between Columbus and Playas on Thursday, watching for illegal immigrants.

Some of the vehicles with the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment were equipped with mounted machine guns and long-range surveillance equipment. Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier said the surveillance mission isn't unusual and was planned last year. "These military resources provide more eyes and ears as force multipliers to help us with our mission," Mosier said.

The operation is the latest in a series of steps to tighten security between Deming and Lordsburg, the busiest route in New Mexico for illegal immigrants and smugglers. Other steps include the addition of more Border Patrol agents and the temporary assignment of state police officers to the Columbus area.

Members of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps have also been watching the Hatchita area this month. "We're happy to see them," Minuteman spokesman Gary Cole said of the Army troops. "We hope they're here for a long time." As members of the National Guard and active duty military units have done in the past, the troops provide surveillance of illegal immigrants for Border Patrol agents.

Lt. Andrew Kennedy considers the mission training for the troops. He added that it frees up Border Patrol assets. Citing security and safety concerns, Mosier declined to disclose the number of troops involved and how long the mission would last. The operation was arranged by Joint Task Force North, a Fort Bliss, Texas-based group that coordinates military homeland security support for law enforcement agencies.

This is going a bit far, I mean, anyone would think an Army was for defence or guarding borders or something. :-D

Isn't stopping illegal immigration going against the economic interests of wanting cheap labour?

It's about time. Now that's a valid use for the US military I can fully support.

Mr.RogerB you are correct in that the job of the Armed forces of The United States is Defense but they also are known for AGGRESSIVE RECRUITING.

(Please Hum the Flight of The Valkaries for effect)

It was only a matter of time before ARMY recruiters behind on their goals would soon stand 20 yards apart armed with brochures on Career opportunities. Air Force recruiters will carpetbomb immegrants with pamplets on the GI Bill in what can only be described as "Shock and Awe". Elite Navy personel will steathly emerge from the shallow waters Rio grande to hand out Pencils and pens that offer you the opportunity to "accelerate your Life"

You can take my word on it. I live in Texas..

Hey, agressive recruiting is when you go for a drink in a slightly dingy pub then wake up on one of her majesty's warships with a splitting headache!

The British Army used to be the place to went to ensure you got three meals a day. When unemployment rises this makes this an attractive option.

Getting promised that the Army will pay for your education and then you thinking you won't have to go to war is called "calling your bluff".

End the Nanny State mentality, (or at least the support thereof), and you will have no problem finding people to work. We would have a 0.2% unemployment rate, less dependence upon the government, and an actual domestic working base. Who would tend the crops? The same people that did before the welfare state came into existance thanks to FDR. Poor people who have no other choice but to take this job or starve to death. If it were up to me, all welfare payments to people who were physically capable of working to any aspect would end tomorrow. Although I will admit that it would have made more sense to first end the welfare programs, then close down the borders. Doing it opposite will only give a period of high demand, but an inadequate supply of laborers. Thank god something is finally being done to stop the onslaught of illegals!

I think that in a few years we'll see the same thing in Europe. The Italian, Spanish and Greek coast guards are already patroling the coasts to stop immigrants trying to enter by boat.

I think that we'll also see armed troops stopping people from once European cities, taken over by muslims, from entering the non-islamic parts of European countries.

The islamification has already begun in Europe. In many parts of Europe, Mohammed is the most common birth name. We have suburbs where over 90% of the population is islamic. It's only a question of time until whole cities have been taken over. Civil war is waiting around the corner.

Schweinshaxe,

Yeah, as most of us here already know, the math of demographic change doesn't look too good for the continuation of traditional European culture. The last time this happened in the 1400's much of Europe was nearly lost due to the mass immigration of Northern African Muslims.

Yes, civil war (well, not exactly a civil war, more like a cultural war) has happened every time Europe has been invaded (either by an army or slowly by immigration, like today) either from the east or from the south. It'll happen this time too or Europe will certainly convert to Islam in time.

JOIN THE BORDER PATROL!!!

Unread postby PrairieMule » Tue 07 Feb 2006, 17:43:09

Has anyone noticed recruiting commercials for the US Customs and Border Patrol in their area? In the last few weeks I have seen these ads showing stuntmen and stuntwomen chasing badguys on horses, atvs and suvs. Looked just like ad for the Army, never seen a tv ad for such a thing. I assume its for the southern border. SBC, do you have cactuses and sand dunes up north?

I and some friends noticed the commercials during the Daily Show. We made fun of them because they were ridiculous.

OF course, I wonder if expanding the border patrol is some kind secret attempt to have a reserve of somewhat proficient individuals to sorta-draft into the army if things blow up with Iran (or Saudi or Nigeria or..)

Or not and they just want to keep Mexicans in Mexico.

Peak oil is a natural resource issue which is inextricably linked to population, carrying capacity and the limits to growth. So is immigration. Of which both issues the US government seems to convienently ignore in favor of the almighty god of endless growth. If they are indeed making genuine efforts to stop illegal immigration in to this country, it's about time.

Stop every campesino at our southern border, give him a handgun, a good rifle, and a case of ammunition, and send him home. He will know what to do with our gifts and good wishes. The people know who their enemies are. ~Ed Abbey, Immigration and Liberal Taboos (1988)

JOS-

Yes I did! I think you now get a choice of uniforms, Cowboy in chaps or all "SWAT"ed out. Gone are the days of the crusty gringo with the Straw Cowboy hat, Toothpick, uncomfortable boots, and mirrorized aviator sunglasses. Now everyone looks like Batman in olive and green.

Did you also they didn't show the any old green school buses with meshed windows lumbering back across the border. It's to tough to sell. I wonder if they will show atvs bursting through the front doors border sweatshops.
