It is impossible to argue with people who want to believe in the imaginary crature, god.

First of all you spout bible crap like it is some magic rather than the written word of a bunch of jerks. Who wrote the bible? The answer is complex, but it boils down to a bunch of guys who did not know jesus, and who had an interest in creating an hero so they could establish a money making religious business.

My view is that you need to be a low brow to believe all this religious fantacy bull.

What it all boild down to is that those of us who see the real world have a real advantage for survival, while those of you who are living a delusion and base your lives on this story book view of creation are in fact at a disadvantage cause you are out of it.

Actually, the real function of peak oil socially is to purge the human mass of those unfit for surrvival, and either you religious whacos or athiest have a better grasp of reality. My bet is with the athiest.

The people who will have a survival advantage are the ones who are aware and preparing now. That has nothing to do with whether or not you believe in God.

Well said, KK. We have enough on our plates without inventing false divisions.

In fact, the ability to work with people of different beliefs (races, gender, ages) is so important that we ought to elevate it to a survival skill.

atheist amongst the mormons

Postby NeoPeasant » Mon 03 Jan 2005, 22:01:34

Here in my Utah suburb probably 4 out of 5 of my neighbors are LDS and know each other from church.
The good thing about this is that mormons are told to keep a year or so of food stored away so my neigbors may be able to outlast a long period of scarce food, and I may not have to shoot any of them to protect my own.
The bad thing is they may form into a community based on their local church in difficult times and nonmembers like me may be regarded suspiciously as outsiders.
Maybe I ought to fake membership just to fit in?

Like most 'communities' - newcommers will always be viewed with suspicion. After a year or 2 of tithing and showing up/participating in the rituals you should be accepted.

It all depends on how you think the downslide of the peak will happen.

If you think it will be a slow slide - *shrug* Odds are you'll get to have a few chuckles at thier expense. (for 2 people 300 lbs of grain but only 28 gallons of water?!?!?!? That's only 28 gallons of beer and you'd have 244 lbs of grain left. Or 1.5-2 gallons of 180 proof booze - how far ya gonna drive on that?!?!?)

If you think it will be a fast, brutish event then yes.

If you think 'demand destruction' will happen via mass depopulation - having 'friends' who will help you (and you are willing to help - assuming you live) would be a good thing.

None of us know the way peak oil will go down. We can only guess. Having your neighbors to NOT have a reason to opt to 'remove you' is a good working plan no matter what version of the other side of the peak you belive in. Its a matter - can you stomach going thru the motions and asking your family to do the same?

No.

Living a lie is unethical.

Living a lie also does not work. It is simply impossible to maintain full consistency over a long period of time. Sooner or later you will slip up and say/do something, even if it's subtle, that marks you as an outsider. Then you may as well forget about being treated nicely by your neighbors.

Move. Now. While you can.

Forget about whatever cushy conveniences you have living where you are, find a place that's more consistent with your actual beliefs. Find a place where you can live the truth.

demand destruction

Postby bud » Wed 05 Jan 2005, 12:23:30

gg3 has a point but its kind of comforting to know there is still some sanity in a state that appears to be a complete theocracy. i'm getting some idea of the meaning of terms like "demand destuction" and "peak oil" but would appreciate some elaberation on them and the purpose and direction of this board.

Atheists Most Hated Group In America

Postby kochevnik » Fri 24 Mar 2006, 16:47:30

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')rom a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.” Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.

Ouch. I would be willing to bet that, much like the very unique results of the IQ and personality polls, we have a disproportionate number of non-religious people here compared to the 'regular' population. Let's find out.

Many of my friends are atheists and some of them reinforce the negative image of atheists by being outspoken about calling religion stupid and religious people stupid and crazy. But I love them anyway, even though I'm crazy and stupid in their eyes. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheTurtle', 'J')esus loves you, kochevnik. :)

Jesus dies and goes up to Heaven. The first thing he does is look for his father, as he has never met the man before and is curious as to what he looks like, and whether or not Jesus looks like his mother or father, etc. He looks high and low but cannot find him.

He asks St. Peter "Where is my father?" But St. Peter says he doesn't know. He asks the archangel Gabriel "Where is my father?" But Gabriel doesn't know. He asks John the Baptist "Where is my father?" But John does not know. So he wanders Heaven, impatiently searching.

Suddenly he sees out of the mist an old man coming toward him. The man is very old, with white hair, stooped over a little. "Stop!" Jesus yells. "Who are you?"

"Oh, please help me, I am an old man in search of my son." Jesus is very curious. Could this be his father? "Tell me of your son, old man." "Oh, you would know him if you saw him. Holes in his hand where the nails used to be, he was nailed to a cross, you know..."

"Father!!!!!" Screams Jesus.
"Pinocchio!!!!!!!" yells the old man.

Well, that's not exactly a shock to me, but definitely a disappointment.

People do NOT like diversity, as a general rule. It's that whole "consensus trance" thing. Somebody who doesn't believe in God makes a religious person question their belief. Just like some nutcase saying the world is running out of oil makes them question if they'll have their McMansion tomorrow. People do NOT like having their fantasies rudely interrupted by doses of reality. They get very angry.. organize into torch-wielding, pitchfork-brandishing gangs when they do.

For you're amusement, I like to relate a story from my younger days that illustrates this pie in the sky attitude. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about UFO appearances and the existence of extraterrestrial life. I get stopped by a third party, another student, who's mocking us rudely because hey, that alien talk, that there's crazy stuff an all (*spit*). So I say, "you don't believe it's at all possible that life has evolved on any other planet, but this one, despite the incalculable number of stars in the universe, etc.?" Nope. But, I inquired, he did believe that the hand of God reaching down from the heavens and forming some clay into the form of an original man sounded completely plausible. I am sure you can divine the answer.

Peak oil, will of course, be solved at the last minute, in the nick of time, when Jesus will personally appear on Wall Street, and sit down, and take four barrels of oil and divide them into infinite fuel supplies, and they'll run for ever and ever amen. After all, what is oil but more loaves and more fish.

It's all semantics. What is a religion but a cult that has more followers? Where is the cutoff line between a cult and a religion? Or take islam, islam contains a complete legal/political system, but people call it a religion and don't compare it to say capitalism or socialism, which are sort of religions themselves. I think that an arguement could be made that classical economics is a religion. Or take scientology? is that religion? or a cult? or pyramid scheme? They seem just as sensitive as muslims when it comes to criticism of their "religion."

Or atheists, some are so fervent about their non-belief in god, that they take on all the qualities of "religious" zealots. Or how about marxists? Now there's a religion if I've ever seen one. Or what about people that listen to Rush Limbaugh and worship his every word. Is that a religion or a cult?

People often associate religion with mindless groupthink and like to blame the worlds ills on religion. That is a false view though, because if people didn't rally around their "religion," they would rally around something else that just didn't happen to be called a "religion" with all the same chracteristics.
