Well, I'm a cornicopian by this site's standards but I still think everything's going to go to hell sooner or later. Not that it has to go down that way but it probably will because most people are so Expletive deleted. complacent.

Those ping-pong guys were very impressive. If I manage to ever acquire a doomstead I will definitely have a ping-pong table on it.

I drew a Master for the first time today. I should have won against him actually but missed my chance & the game drifted into a draw. The guy showed up for the Cherry Hill Quads with an average 400 point advantage over everyone ele in the quad & seemed pretty certain he'd be walking home with the $50 pot. But I'm not one to give up without a hard fight, especially with money on the line. Another tourney tomorrow, going for the Best-Under-1900 prize.

I made a new YouTube channel showcasing some of my more recent games (haven't fully analyzed my Master draw yet but probably will make a vid on it).

Also, I set up a simil for my local chess club with the cutest lil' chess player you will ever see. :)

I think this is the position. White's got a superior position here but there's a way to make Black resign pretty much immediately.

Rc8+ RxR
Qa7+ KxQ
pxR promote to Knight (royal fork) :)
What happens if Rc8+ KxP ?

Stalemate ?

Hmmm, I think Rc8 to c5 and the black king is on the run. Not RxR anyway.

I didn't use a computer so I'm probably wrong :)

If KxP, then RC8xRH8

White wins a rook, which in this situation is an inevitable win barring any major blunders.

Pretty popular, free chess tactics. Most people see their rating plummet when they first begin solving, then it rises once you become comfortable. Some are easy, some hard.

In order to push your rating higher, you have to solve them quickly.

Oops. You're right.

I probably set up the puzzle wrong when I first posted it. Probably shouldn't have put the king on that square.

Yup. The king should be on G2 next to the queen on F2. Then the puzzle works the way its supposed to.

Sorry!

It's not a stalemate. At least, not necessarily a stalemate.

I punched in the original (mistaken) puzzle position into Winboard and had Fruit and Ruffian duke it out. These are two very very strong chess engines. White had a big advantage right off the bat. But the whole point of the puzzle was spoiled by my placing the king on H2 in error.

Here is how the game played out:
1. Qf5 {+7.29/13} Qd6+ {-11.54/15} 2. Kh1 {+9.76/13} Qd1+ {-11.54/14} 3.
Kg2 {+11.61/15} Qxc2+ {-11.37/12} 4. Qxc2 {+12.42/16} Rd8 {-11.37/12} 5.
Qc6 {+12.62/15} Rh8 {-20.74/18} 6. Qd5 {+19.70/16} Re8 {-16.72/12} 7.
Qxg5 {+20.78/15} Rf8 {-20.74/12} 8. Qe5+ {+21.18/14} Kxb7 {-21.60/13} 9.
Qg7+ Kc8 {-21.60/10} 10. Qxf8+ {+327.52/11} Kd7 {-99.86/17} 11. g5
Ke6 {-99.88/29} 12. g6 Ke5 {-99.90/49} 13. g7 Kd4 {-99.92/49} 14. g8=Q
Kc3 {-99.94/47} 15. Qc5+ Kb2 {-99.96/44} 16. Qb8+ Ka1 {-99.98/43} 17. Qca7#
{White mates} 1-0

The numbers in brackets are running game scores. White is up 7.29 points right away. In games played by near equal chess engines, if one of them is up more than a point, it usually wins the game.

Download a copy of Winboard from Tim Mann's site. Copy/Paste the above into it, and you'll be able to see the moves on the board.

Winboard download

1001 Chess Tactics

(The last file listed contains ALL the exercises - ALL.zip)

There used to be a simple utility called WinMan.exe that made setting up chess engines on Winboard a snap. But all the links are broken now. Don't know why.

If you try to set up a chess position on Fritz or Arena or any of the UCI boards, you'll find that you won't be able to have two chess engines play from the position you have set up. Those others chess programs only let you play games from the get-go.

Winboard is the only interface that I know of that will allow you to have two engines play each other starting from a chess position you have set up.

I've got WinMan.exe. If anyone wants it, let me know; I'll upload it to a place where you can grab it.

That one took me about 5 minutes of real brain power...
Qh4+ Kg8
Qg3+ Kh8
Bc3...xrays the queen :)

Thanks for the links, it's been awhile - I can only take a lot of chess for a month or two then I have to put it down for a year or so.

It's pretty much impossible to beat a modern computer chess program in the endgame and with their massive opening books already programmed in it's hard to even stay even from the start. Online chess is annoying unless you can trust the opponent not to use computer assistance :)

Real people - street chess. That's the best chess out there.

Here is the "game of the century" to flip through. Fischer was only 13 playing black against the strongest player in the US at the time.

Often though, street chess is blitz chess & generally low quality. Don't get me wrong, street chess (in Washington Square park mainly) is a main part of how I got so into chess but most street players are not getting better & would not do well in real tournaments. Maybe I'm just biased though cause blitz isn't my strong suit.

Chess is a peculiar game, even really smart people make mistakes in chess.

When I was a kid, I looked at the world championship games between Karpov and Korchonoi and one game where Korchonoi resigned, I analyzed it and he could have mostly likely gotten a checkmate in like 7 moves I think it was.

I should go digging for that and post it (and my solution to it)

I like 3D chess more though, and computer games like Civilization more because you can create new "pieces" essentially.

That's from Reinfeld's 1001 Mates book, I just saw it a few days ago. I was unable to calculate the line until the end but I got the basic idea right. Of course that's not really good enough considering your first move (when you make a move like that you have to see the mate!).

Heh, moving the white Knight to g5 is going to cause all sorts of problems for black who has to start defending against mate. I only see moving the pawn to h6 and then the other knight moves in to fork the queen and rook...

A harder first move to see in a killer combination can be found on white's 21st move in the Immortal Game featured in one of the best dystopian movies ever made - Blade Runner. Someone made a nice annotated page of the game here... link
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his page shows the moves of a chess game, with a diagram for every move, to make it easy to read even without a chess board handy to play the game.

Although I must admit that I am hardly qualified to comment too instructively on the moves, studying annotated master games is indeed one popular method for learning about Chess. The game I have chosen is one considered to be perhaps the most entertaining game of chess ever played. It is the game played in 1851 in the Divan in London between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky, termed the "Immortal Game". This game was played informally, not as part of a match or tournament.

Adolf Andersson was a mathematics teacher by profession, ...
