Hi from Maine

Unread postby Woodenpaddler » Tue 29 Jul 2008, 15:20:29

I had become increasing uncomfortable and disatisfied with modern society but could never put my finger on what was really wrong until I read up about Peak Oil last week. It all makes total sense to me now!

The next few years are going to be very interesting! I count myself lucky I have some resources: hands-on skills, vegetable garden, wood heating, very fit biker and runner, used to have chickens and goats. My focus will now be on making huge changes in my life before they are forced, and helping my young kids to learn the kinds of skills they may need in the future. This still may not be enough and certainly won't be easy, but all I can do is try!

Whereabouts?

We're in Cumberland county.

Been P.O. aware since 2003. Once attended Portland's Oil awareness group, but decided it wasn't worth the drive.

I know John Howe of Waterford, the solar-powered tractor guy.

I've used P.O. material in my classes at USM.

I was born and raised in Bangor. Moved to Florida because the snow shoveling was so much easier.

I have opened the front door before, just after a good windy blizzard, only to find a wall of snow covering the entire doorway.

As harsh as the winters can be, the summers can not be beat.

I have heard the Costco building at Docklands is in progress, but what worries me about it is... firstly, it costs $50 for membership and secondly, everything is sold in mega bulk quantities from what I have heard, and will people feel that they have to over consume because they have paid for the privilege?

It may make sense for people with big families, but for those of us who are households of one or two, I can't see it will be of any benifit, I can ride my pushie to Aldi and get the same value, I would have to drive a 70km round trip to get to Costco at Docklands...

The customers interviewed in US said they made back the membership fee first time they shopped.
Search on the web and you'll see costco has almost a cult following. They do sell bulk, but from what I saw it was more of double the size packets etc. Not really huge bulks.

I think you can buy without membership also but at a higher price. Not 100% on that one though.

Given that Docklands is a bit off the track for me, I will probably only buy stuff that don't go bad quickly and stock up on those things whenever I go there.

With membership also, probably it is not individual. So you can share the card with family, relatives, friends. Just need to keep track of who's got it.

Hello from Toronto / Relocating to New Brunswick

Hello, I live in Toronto now but have purchased land between Moncton and Shediac in New Brunswick for eventual relocation and will be building a house there in the next few years. Interested in sustainability and energy issues.

Welcome,

Are you a native New Brunswicker? What are the land prices like in that neck of the woods? What made you decide to head out east?

Yet Another Oklahoman

Unread postby Rohese » Wed 30 Jul 2008, 19:27:57

Hello everyone! I've been reading the site since this spring and have learned a lot. I am definitely much more aware of current events (as they relate to energy) now. I have been evaluating my situation and trying to figure out how best to prepare. I've made a few small preparations and have some others in mind. Thanks to all the regular posters for all the great information. I look forward to participating on the forums!

I agree it migh be a good resourse for those who are working at building up co-ops for basic staples, and I will be checking it out with that in mind. My worry is that it encourages those who don't know better to buy more things that they wil end up throwing out. (like my father in law who just buys stuff "because it was on special" and then trys to give it away because he doesn't actually want/need it....
