$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JoeW', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Kingcoal', 'H')owdy, I'm in Allentown.

Holy Moly, KingCoal. I work in Allentown! We should have lunch sometime!

Sure, my work is very slow right now, I'm working from home a lot which is why I've been posting a lot lately. There is a local Peak Oil club, but I've never made it to any of the meetings because I've been so busy in the past. I do a lot of software work for material handling companies, most of whom have huge truck fleets. Guess what? They are getting killed by high diesel prices! Surprise, surprise. If people think it's gloomy around here, you should hear these guys. As a result, they are battened down. Anyway, I'll send you a PM this week and we'll see if we can get some lunch.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jazzguitar14', 'H')ey there, first post hello from pennsylvania...

Im just a fiddle player / luthier who spends too much time in the stock market... Great to be here, the discussions seem very well informed...

Ultra conservative capitalist in fear of the fed...

See ya' around...

Being an "ultra conservative capitalist", you're going to have a lot more to fear than just the fed...imagine what's going to happen once the unemployment rate skyrockets above 25% and 20 million people lose their homes. If you guessed the greatest "reallocation" of wealth in history, you're spot-on. Capitalism is now in its last, final days, trust me on that one.

But your musical skills sure will come in handy in the future though...welcome aboard. :-D

Hello, I'm new to this forum

Unread postby elevbess » Wed 23 Jul 2008, 18:33:00

Hi, my name is Bess and I am twenty-three years old, moving from Wisconsin to Maryland to attend graduate school. I've been PO aware for about two years, and to be honest, I still have a lot of troubling dealing with the issue, which I think has been a problem for me. I went from a stage of intense panic to apathy to panic to apathy...I can't seem to find a happy medium even now.

In grad school I'll be studying to be an archivist. I believe that the preservation of knowledge will be important in any kind of world, especially post peak. If we want to move forward, we need to at least have our house in order, right? There are days when I think I'm doing the wrong thing and that I should have just run off to the country to raise llamas, but I feel passionately about preserving information and the past, so that's what I'm going to do.

My approach to preparation is to learn to do what I can in a situation where I don't have my own house - getting food at farmer's markets, doing my best to conserve power, not having a car (fortunately where I'm moving to public transit is good), learning basic skills - I'm a good cook, I'm learning to bake my own bread, I know how to cook vegetarian, and I know basic knitting and sewing. It's nothing like what some people are doing, but it's a start.

On most days I have what I guess is an optimistic approach to PO - I don't think we'll cruise happily into a post-carbon world, but I think that America has a lot of room to cut back and still be perfectly comfortable provided people wrap their heads around the fact that hopping into an SUV to drive everywhere isn't a good idea. To be honest, I hope that gas prices stay high. I worry a lot that if they start to drop, everyone will just shrug and go back to doing what they've always done. The four dollar a gas mark has at least gotten people thinking; let's hope that continues.

I'm actually really interested in what young people are doing to prepare, and hearing what advice older people have for my generation and younger.

"cut back and still be perfectly comfortable". That would be nice. I suppose it depends on what you mean by comfortable.

I would caution you that, while the death of SUVs may be the most obvious symptom of the disease, it is a perfectly innocuous one, and, if you read this site long enough, you'll see . . . more.

Welcome aboard.

hello

Unread postby graham » Fri 25 Jul 2008, 08:52:02

Hello, I have made various posts elswhere but thought I should introduce myself properly.

As you can tell from my username my name's Graham i'm 29 currently living in Wales but soon to be moving to Brighton, U.K. to start my degree. I'm training to become an architect though due to my recent discovery of P.O. I am having second thoughts- maybe i'll do a second/combined honours degree in enviromental engineering.

I've been sick with M.E. (chronic fatigue syndrome- pathetic name) for the last 10 years but am now almost recovered, hence starting university so late.

I'm self employed on a part time basis, making custom furniture, though have noticed a big drop off in sales the past 6 months. I'm hoping these skills will be applicable post peak.

I first became aware 5 months ago whilst researching resource depletion and have spent every day researching the issue since. I went into panic mode when I first found out about it- particuarly after reading Matt Savinars site, though i'm not an outright doomer anymore after reading the Hirsch report. Unlike many people here i've found almost all of the people i've spoken to, with the exception of mum and my stepfather, responsive to the concept- particuarly with oil prices as they are. I decided to join this site so I could have some of my questions answered, which has been particuarly helpful, thankyou to those who answered my tedious questions!

Welcome to PeakOil.com, Graham! Since you've been posting here already, you should have a fair idea how things work. But, do ask questions when the need arises. :)
Custom furniture, huh? That's a good skill.

Yeah, I saw it. Don't think shock tactics like that work for long unless you make it easy for people to make the better choices.
As it is now, I have no idea how you pick a chicken or any other animal from a "happy farm" unless you buy it directly from the farm.

By the way, any heard when Costco is opening in Melbourne yet?
Saw the segment on current affair and they seem to have great prices in the other countries. Good to see some more competition, especially in the food space. Don't know if their chickens came from happy farms thought, so perhaps best to stick to vegies and snacks.
