That's a big part of the problem. Sheeple will grouse about others doing better or getting more than they do, but, as long as TPTB don't take away their goodies, they will never do anything different.

Yeah, the so-called flower children by and large haven't made a peep about the environment, GMO's etc. . .

Other than a few, refreshing exceptions the whole generation sold out. The children of that generation are the worst yet on the whole planet, coddled, supported and encouraged by their parents to previously unknown levels of hedonism, overconsumption and narcissism.

And yes, I'm a teacher.

Well stated. Americans were brought up ingrained with the notion that cheap energy was a "given" (almost as though it was an inalienable right). They were brought up to believe that to be successful required owning a McMansion in the suburbs with a 3-car garage.

They are incapable of knowing or believing anything else, absent a cataclysmic event.


so my boss told me this morning that now is the worst possible time to invest in energy as it is about to come back down; and "they" are working on an alternative fuel. "They" are going to fix our current problems. And he really, really believes this.

Yesterday the meatcutter was talking about "American Idol" on U-tube and I said you should watch "They Long Emergency" and he told me I was full of crap, the same old doom and gloom, I "like" stuff like that, and if it were true, there's nothing we could do anyway. (and he's well educated, also).

A customer this morning flat out refused to talk to me when I said oil was projected to go up more yet. (Although he did say we'll see in a year, won't we?)

I fear for the future. The public is NOT going to take this well.

This goes for anyone responding to this thread. What do you want the "sheeple" to be saying, doing, being differently? And how would you know they were doing it, or not doing it?


IMHO, the people who like to use the "sheeple" term have an inferiority complex and get off on feeling superior and name-calling. So the last thing they want is the "sheeple" to actually "wake up".

What you fail to understand is that people LIKED this and were happy to see the US transform itself as it did after WWII. That transformation was probably inevitable. They LIKED the freedom of owning a car and being able to go anywhere whenever they wanted rather than using a train or a bus. They liked having a house with a backyard where they could have a pool, a swing set, and a treehouse. They liked being away from the smog and the crime. Sustainability was totally off the radar.

Those who believe if not for some corporate cabal we'd still be living in brownstones in the city with rural agricultural towns serviced by rail are kidding themselves.

That's why we have divisions in the world. Countries, states, regions, churches, different cultures in their own partitioned zones. People tend to want to cluster around others that have the same view of the world, or at least similar enough that they aren't always reaching for eachother's throats. If you live in an area where everyone else thinks differently you are bound to feel alienated.

Nonsense there were suburbs before WWII and even before WWI but they where generally not popular. The idea of the suburb had to be sold with advertising and monetary incentments such as the mortgage tax deduction which made renting financially imprudent. Big government programs such the multi billion dollar interstate construction project the largest public engineering project since the construction of the Great Wall of China was nothing more than a direct subsidy to suburbs.

Hundreds of electric street car lines were bought up by none other than GM so they could dismantle them and sell cars to the public and sell noisy unreliable buses to public transit authorities. There was even an anti-trust case filed to the US supreme court. That is where the GM lawyers successfully argued "What is good for GM is good America." If that case went the other way and GM was not allowed the destroy America's electric street car then suburbs probably would not have taken off like they did.

HUD's urban renewal plans where nothing short of disaster for US cities. Working class neighborhoods where flooded with poor and most black populations praying on people's racist fears at the time to exit the city stage left and live in the suburbs as middle class consumers.

The rise of the suburbs was not something that just happened by chance. Few people cared about the suburbs until the big banks, auto makers, economists, and government politicians convinced the US populace that the suburbs = the American dream and then took direct actions to make it happen. If you think the suburbs happened just by chance because people like the idea then you are not just delusional you are living in a complete fantasy dreamland. Wake up already.

I've been working for freedom and liberty for some years and with the problems that have cropped up over the last few, I'm much more interested in me and mine along with friends who think along the same lines. We're working toward arranging our lives in a way so that we will have options that 90% of the population won't have in the years to come.

I think people are being quiet because they're starting to get an inkling that something is really wrong.

Remember, most people don't know anything about this whole thing. All they get is what the MSM feeds them, and sometimes if they're busy or never watch the news they might not even get that much.

No, I'm serious. Some people are so intoxicated with the word "sheeple" that they can't seem to post here without using this dehumanizing epithet. Really, it accomplishes nothing. It's the same thing religions do when they separate people into the faithful and the subhuman heathen.

I've seen it on the MSM, all the major news stations, the local paper, heck, I watched it on the history channel the other night. It's out there. If you want an opinion of what the general consensus thinks, I believe you have to ask the general consensus. Well, I've done just that, I know someone in retail and I asked them to get the general public opinion. It starts off with 'well, you have heard of peak oil?' and ends with 'what do you think is really going on?'

You know what they say, they say there is plenty of oil, you can't really believe the reporting of the reserves, and they think they are being screwed. That is what they say.

I think shortages is the only thing that will change their mind.

I don't use the phrase, but it has its proper usages.

Another quick question: Seriously... I was wondering... if I retire in Cuba will my pension, investments, and SS, and what not allow me to live like a old-school suburban Moscow commissar? The weather there is really nice and the pace is sweet and slow, just as I like it.

Cuba would be a great place to be post peak. I think that they have figured out a lot of the things that make things work with much less oil.

Unfortunately I'll bet your social security checks would have a hard time getting there with the embargo.
