I guess I’m kind of like Tyler except for the sun worshiping part, but for me it is hard to separate God from Religion.
I grew up in a little Baptist church where some of my uncles were deacons (or whatever they are called), one grandfathers was a part time preacher and all that. As I got older I hung out at a bar or two and met some “un-churched people” as the saying goes.
The upshot is that I’ve met evil Christians and saintly sinners and whether they went to church or not had nothing to do with it except to make some intolerant of the beliefs of others as is reflected in this thread.
The interesting thing about growing up in church is the how the traditions affect you. I love old-timey gospel music, dressing up for church, Sunday dinner with the extended family. I always encouraged my kids to go to church with their friends though I never did except for special occasions. At thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. one will usually offer a prayer.
I guess it is kind of strange but I and whatever grandkids are around always get cleaned up and go to the library on Saturdays, then to the park, museum or whatever.
So, no, I’m not a true believer. What I do believe is Heaven or Hell is in how folks remember you when you're gone.
Cripes, this is way too deep for Saturday morning.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
-- Abraham Lincoln, Fragment on Government (July 1, 1854)
