Re: I'm Addicted to Petroleum

Petroleum has killJOY by the balls. Both of them.

That's right, farmer killjoy, sustainable maine fag killjoy.

1. My 1990 VW Fox

2. Don's 1980 Toyota truck

3. Our 1948 Farmall A

4. Our 194? Ford 9N

5. Chainsaw

6. Lawn mower

So what do we do? We hardly leave the house. Don's in semi-retirement and leaves the house a couple of times a week for grain and such. I work part-time and stay home the rest of the time. I go through a tank of gasoline in my car (about 11 gallons) once every two weeks or slightly less.

When hay season comes around, we use about 60 gallons to run the tractors. No baler: we pick up with a hayloader (loose)

Chainsaw is goddess's gift.

I hate mowing the lawn and it looks like crap most of the time.

I won't even go into the plastic in our lives.....

Wish I could get off the shit. Hooked like everyone else, though at a lower "dosage."

I hear ya, maine fag farmer. You have my heartfelt sympathies. The lower dosage issue is critical. That's really what it's all about isn't it? I mean, if we look real close at the problem, we see that we are all interconnected and that it is a collective crisis we face, however much we disapprove of how our fellow citizens live their lives as consumers. I'm sure there were observant folks living on Easter Island who could see what was coming. Not a damn thing they could do about it though.

Screw that "lower dosage" crap. I want one of these 700 HP babies:

Oh, I suppose I could settle for one of these if I had to:

C'mon, you people, we gotta live in the moment. We could die in our sleep tonight, right? Who cares about the future? We may not even be there!

Not me. I use lots of petroleum and petroleum products. I'm just a casual user though. If I thought it was a problem I would just quit. That's why I know it's not a problem because I could just quit anytime if it was.

Of course I am. I exist within the petroleum economy.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

There's a little old lady (97) who lives down the street from me, she has one breast and no teeth, but I hear she is looking for a good time for herself and her dog named boner. I can hook the 5 of you up if you wish. Not sure how much she can pay but what the hell, it's worth a try.

Either that or you can always rent yourself out to tourists, although if you are seldom_seen people might not notice you standing on the corner.

The top one is a Maybach Exelero. (Maybach is Mercedes' new ultra-luxury brand.) The one on the bottom is a Brabus Mercedes SLR McLaren.

agreed, and not just cars like that. All cars are connected to coming of age. Elaine Robinson was conceived in the back seat of a Ford or a Chevy. Many of us have memories of making out in cars when we were teenagers. This is a subtext to the issue that Kunstler goes on about that Americans are stuck in the mindset of finding some way to keep the cars going. Americans will give up their car keys from their cold, dead hands. Cars are sexy.

Hi. I'm Jack. I'm addicted to petroleum.

And, I'm glad. A shot of petro - the good stuff, no cut, makes me feel more alive. Makes the colors brighter, makes food taste better. It makes me smarter too - my computer can do more calculations and retrieve more data than I ever could without it.

Now, there's word on the street that the supply is down. That's OK - because I only need enough for me. The rest are - shall we say - expendable. Heck, maybe I can feed my habit with a little dealin'.

Here, take a snort. Premium grade, made from Saudi light sweet crude. Good, ain't it? Feels better, don't it?

Yeah, I thought so.

Yes, I spent some good times at the Drive In in my semi-rural place of coming of age. They don't have drive-ins much anymore (the one I used to go to is now a Wal-Mart) and it seems like they are running out of places to "park".

Walking your girl home from the movies or a play on a beautiful night is also "sexy" I've discovered. It's also easy to meet people after seeing them and they seeing you at the same grocer, the same pub, on the same sidewalk week after week. "Hey, do live around here? Can I walk with you, I'm heading that way..." Doesn't work in a car.

There's still a few of the drive-in movies here, but most of them are gone. But back to the car thing. I believe that Americans have a libidinal relationship with their cars. Getting inside is like getting into a womb or something. Listening to music inside is a sensual experience. You can turn on the air-conditioning and groove on down the highway. Even inserting the key into the ignition is a sensual thing. Breaking open a dashboard to hot wire the ignition is like rape. Americans will fight for their cars. "Nuke 'em! Get The Gas!" will appear on bumper stickers before this is over.

My name is Iaato and I'm addicted to carbon.

And then there's the aeroplane high. Me and my friends, when we get depressed in February, we get together and smoke the Alaska airlines website. A sudden rush to know that I can just click my finger on the button, and I get that magic six letter code that gives me freedom and a high like no other. Heck, I get high just pulling out the Alaska Airlines credit card. Buy somethin' and get more miles! Wanna go to Nome in July with friends for a joy-bike ride? Done. Getting a little sad in the dark? gotta feel that sun on your face? Well, Havaii is only 5 hours away. Shoot, it's so easy, why not go twice a year? Rafting on the Kongakut in June? What? Three planes and car-ride too, you say? Pssshhhh on that carbon footprint thing. Airfare doesn't count. As long as I've installed my CFL lights in my house, and I recycle, that covers me. Special dispensation as an Alaskan contributing to the oil production for everybody else in the Mr. Toad economy. I'm special, so I can smoke all I want.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'P')MS I don't think it's that kinky at all.

The automobile is the most highly engineered and expertly crafted device many of us will ever own. Running on inexpensive petroleum fuel is it capable of fanastic mechanical feats--stomach wrenching acceleration and the power of dozens of team of horses.

Plus it is a thing of industrial beauty. Could you imagine a kitchen chair with four degrees of electric motion and a heated bottom option. Car radios and speaker systems are better than all but the most expensive custom installed home theaters. I bet an average modern automobile is built far better than the home you live in.

No you underestimate people. Our loss will be tragic.
 you've got the art of irony down, that's for sure.

Hi NEOPO again just wondering why I/we are so seemingly willing to powerdown???

I havent driven in 2 weeks and I dont want to drive.
We do much of everything with the objective of driving as least as possible and we plan a near future that will require little or no driving, hydrocarbons etc etc...

Are we insane?
and if so doesnt this mean that our government owes us a monthly check? :)

One thought about sexual experiences.
If you had your first or subsequent sexual experiences in an outhouse you would have fond memories of the outhouse.
Ah that new outhouse smell
It is easier to enslave a people that wish to remain free then it is to free a people who wish to remain enslaved.
