Is that 22 seperate charges for one person, or 22 seperate people, or some combination of the two?

We'll wait and see. I'm not getting excited about any of this yet.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'I')'m not sure the Bush people will leave power.

No, I'm not one of those who think Dubya will annoint himself emperor or anything like that. But the GOP has a solid majority in both wings of Congress, and a good chance of winning the White House again. (President Jeb Bush, anyone?) Scandals only come out when at least one wing of Congress is controlled by the opposition party.

I'm really worried about the direction our country is taking, and I suspect oil is part of it. No one will ever say so outright, but I suspect part of the reason we've gotten so partisan is economic. There's less to go around, and for that reason, people are getting meaner. Less tolerant, less generous, less willing to put up with views different from their own. This will only get worse as oil prices keep rising.

If we follow the pattern, as we get closer and closer to collapse, there will be stricter and stricter controls over the population. Think Communist Cuba. Though it looks like rather than going extreme left, we'll be going extreme right. The rise of the American Taliban.

I find this overly alarmist. One must always be cautious, but I find the alarmists also seem to lack historical context. If we look at the US history over the past 100 years, what we're seeing right now--with the Republicans--is nothing but standard procedure. It's not end of the world. It's not fascism breaking out all over the place. I mean we had people pulled before a government tribunal to assess their unamerican activities. A race of people put into camps, pushed by Gov Warren in California. Those considered unamerican lost their jobs, their security clearances, etc etc. There are also good reasons to believe that there was a conspiracy to assasinate Roosevelt. He was hated by the extreme right.

The right has been fighting back to regain lost ground in the last 25 years, starting with Ronald Reagan. I don't agree with most or all of the economic policies since, but I think alarmism is not warranted.

I'm not sure, but I haven't heard the '22' number thrown around since I posted that. I did find this, though:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') special counsel is focusing on whether Vice President Dick Cheney played a role in leaking a covert CIA agent's name, according to people familiar with the probe that already threatens top White House aides Karl Rove and Lewis Libby.

This is from MSNBC's Hardball:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')If there are indictments, they're going to be probably in the vice president's office, they're probably going to come next week and they are going to blow this White House apart.

It's going to be unbelievable.

I think the people watching right now who are voters better start paying attention to this issue. It's not just about whether somebody's name was leaked, it's about whether we went to war under false pretenses or not, whether people knew about that or not, and what they did when they were charged against that kind of offense against the United States.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9601200/#051019a

And US News And World Report says there are rumors all over DC that Cheney is about to resign, though White House sources deny them:

And now there's talk of Cheney resigning over this. So many rumors though, and so many predictions. I'm not holding my breath though.

Don't be the least bit surprised if the special prosector finishes the investigation, issues no indictments, and seals the records. The fact that a new Paris Hilton sex tape will conveniently be released on the same day and distract the public from any discussion of this issue would be completely coincidence, of course. :P

I don't want to sound like I completely discount the possibilty of some serious indictments coming down, but nothing much surprises me as far as this administration is concerned. They seem to get away with pretty much... everything.

Maybe in the past they could get away with stuff like this, but I think at this point they've pissed off too many people - and not just the Democrats. I think there are a lot of Republicans now who are angry as hell & are not as eager to bail them out as they used to be.

Oh, and a second Cheney aide is now cooperating in the probe:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ow, those close to the investigation say that a second Cheney aide, David Wurmser, has agreed to provide the prosecution with evidence that the leak was a coordinated effort by Cheney’s office to discredit the agent's husband. Her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, was one of the most vocal critics of the Iraq war.

Here is an interesting piece from the person who authored the Espionage Act. Her analysis? No crime was committed.

If her description of the act is accurate, that may well be true. I'm not sure however. She seems to talk about what was "intended", and I wonder if the law is worded accordingly. If it is, it's strange that there was even a criminal probe to begin with. You'd think the Bush administration would have pointed it out long ago.

REPORTS: INDICTMENTS COMING SOON

Postby OilsNotWell » Tue 25 Oct 2005, 19:45:07

This is likely undoubtedly big news, so big I am placing it here...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')ct 25, 2005 Indictments Coming Tomorrow; Targets Received Letters Today
An uber-insider source has just reported the following to TWN (since confirmed by another independent source):
1. 1-5 indictments are being issued. The source feels that it will be towards the higher end.
2. The targets of indictment have already received their letters.
3. The indictments will be sealed indictments and "filed" tomorrow.
4. A press conference is being scheduled for Thursday.

The shoe is dropping. More soon.-- Steve Clemons

Update: further commentary from CBS's John Roberts
http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/001031.html

Raw Story and CBS also confirming something huge is happening...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'h')ttp://www.rawstory.com/
BREAKING: CBS To Report Fitzgerald Will Make His Decision Known Tomorrow From the CBS Evening News, to air at 6:30PM:
CBS’ JOHN ROBERTS: Lawyers familiar with the case think Wednesday is when special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will make known his decision, and that there will be indictments. Supporters say Rove and the vice president’s chief of staff, Scooter Libby, are in legal jeopardy. But they insisted today the two are secondary players, that it was an unidentified Mr. X who actually gave the name of CIA agent V alerie Plame to reporters. Fitzgerald knows who Mr. X is, they say, and if he isn’t indicted, there’s no way Rove or Libby should be. But charges may not focus on the leak at all. Obstruction of justice or perjury are real possibilities. Did Rove or Libby change statements made under oath? Did they deliberately leave critical facts out of their testimony or did they honestly forget? Some Republicans urged Rove to step down if indicted. Not a happy prospect for president Bush.

DEVELOPING...

I'd just point out that down here we're already in tomorrow. I'll tell you about it later.

God I hope Rove and Libby (especially Rove) are indicted. For anything. In my dreams I'd wish for Cheney to be indicted too, but I can't pretend that's likely.

Mr. X huh? Maybe the reports of Cheney being involved are true. But when you get to obstruction of justice and perjury, it could be anyone. Even Bush himself has testified before this grand jury, hasn't he?

But Bush wasn't "under oath", the fact that he took an oath of office should mean he should be under oath 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365.24 days a year.

While some will rejoice, I will be sorrowful, for those who are hold high office have allegedly dishonored their solemn obligations to represent we the people, defend the Constitution, and faithfully execute the laws of the United States. They're supposed to be better than us, but who are we kidding. I guess that's the problem...misguided assumptions that some are more equal than others.

My understanding, also, is that Bush and Cheney were interviewed. But perhaps that could be a crime, as well, lying to a federal law enforcement official?? Not sure, but hoping.
