Not sure. Perhaps the other stories would be more likely to induce panic?
Entertainment value?
I do know that i have given up Big Business News almost entirely. Mostly beacuse I just don't give a damn about Michael Jackson or Scott Peterson or most of the rest of the crap presented as "news".

Right...what he said^OK MD, here's the deal, you have to analyze this kind of thing: the Brit wants to know, if some tropical fruit in the store happens to carry a spider from the tropics all the way up to cloudy Ol' England and the little beast comes out to inject venom into a hapless customer, why is this big headline news? Now the story is not about arachnophobia, its about the spider. However, the reason that it becomes big news is because of arachnophobia. If you have some story that will appeal to people's innate desire for a scary read, why then you simply must lead with the story because it will sell a lot of papers. I thought this was clear in my very succinct answer but I guess not, so it was therefore neccessary for me to make this detailed analysis for your benefit.

Ah, so what you are saying, people have evolved a fear of spiders over a long period of time because they are potentially dangerous. They like to read about these particular scary things because knowledge of such threats is beneficial to deep-seated survival instinct.

On the other hand, threats like energy depletion must be appreciated in an abstract manner, which most people don't bother with. Without an instinctive fear, they are considered uninteresting.

I hope that's what you meant.

You laugh but a determined terrorist could do a lot of harm if they tried. Homeland security is just responding to a planned attack.

I really think Homeland Security is attempting to save lives here.

I don't like the idea that terrorists were planning an attack on a store but they keep planning. Sooner or later they will succeed. Like the little engine that could.

I think I can, I think I can, I know I can.

We really need to wake up and smell the coffee. We haven't had much experience with suicide bombers here. We have been lucky. 911 wasn't enough to wake up American's. At least many of you.

These people even set off bombs in friendly countries to their causes like the recent bomb in Iran.

Think about it..........
Peace out!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
') Why all the denial? Maybe you want scary, but not too scary.
Here's a good example of what I'm thinking: there's a big movie about an oil panic. What caused the oil panic? Hurricanes and terrorists. Scary, but not too scary. A movie based on the peak oil situation was deemed too scary. Can there be any doubt that the producers of this movie were aware of peak oil? They wouldn't touch it.

Hmm. I first saw this thread when it came out, and then shrugged it off. BUT...
I've been in Augusta, GA for a few months now (contract work, still making it home a few days every couple of weeks to work on the homestead). Well, my camera has been f*cking up, so I took it into WalMart (yeah!! my FAVORITE store!!!) to shoot some shots, get them developed and see if it was bad film or my camera.
So I go in, turn in my keys for an oil change, have my camera around my shoulders, get some film, walk around the film center shooting shots (without focusing or targeting) just to get a variable for my test on my camera.
I turn the film in (that one and an earlier one) and take my cart over to the lawn and garden section just to compare prices (and quality) on some tools I still need to get. A COP, not a security guard, follows me down there, asks me some questions about the camera. I tell him about it and he says, "Okay, well, you can't take pictures in here."

Okay. Not a problem. But I could have sworn that a guy in civilian clothes shadowed me the rest of the time (the whole time I'm thinking, Jesus, they already have security camera's everywhere!). Which, made me want to add my little experience here.

Where's the lettuce?

Unread postby pup55 » Tue 16 Aug 2005, 20:55:27

Every Monday, I walk down to the store and buy a head of iceberg lettuce for salads for the week. Cheaper than salad-in-a bag.

Yesterday, I went down and....no iceberg lettuce!
Today checked again....no iceberg lettuce!

Where's the lettuce?

p.s. I don't really care about the lettuce. What I really meant to say is: There might be some energy-related food distribution issues starting to creep in. esp. stuff from California.

Has anyone else had a similar experience lately?

Haven't seen it yet in my grocery, but I noticed a sign at a Subway's sandwich shop saying that there may be shortages of produce because of hurricane-related disruptions (I'm in California).

If we start seeing more trucker protests & strikes because of the high cost of diesel, I'm sure these shortages will become a lot more common.

I have noticed, in my area, that empty shelves seem to stay empty a little longer. I am wondering if stores are starting to manage re-orders a little more. You know, waiting till they have a large enough order to justify the shipping costs.

If that is the case, I have a feeling that it is just the begining. Pretty soon, they will stop carrying things that have a high shipping cost in favor of more locally produced items, if there is a substitute. Watch for prices on long distance items to start going up, and up, and up...

I've noticed that my normal store has really crappy lettuce now. So I went to another (more expensive) store and they have a bit less crappy lettuce. Some kinda shortage going on. I'm on the east coast US.

I've read on another thread, that they are no longer trucking califonia peaches to new york due to the cost of fuel for the trucks.

Perhaps this is the kind of "localization" we've been expecting to see.
