$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('satjeet', 's')o lettuce is , on the east coast, a spring crop and if you're lucky mid fall. Why are you surprised, you're still living in the Maya!!!

The point is that I've aways had perfect lettuce and now I don't. I'm not complaining, I'm just sayin.

I haven't noticed a lettuce shortage at all in my area, mid-Missouri, but I do think the overall quality of produce has be much diminished this year. We buy more leaf lettuce and romaine than iceberg, but the iceberg has been easily available.

Who cares about iceberg lettuce anyway? That stuff's not food!

My local corporate market has collards, big ol' honkin' bag for like $2 or $3, spinach agains decent bag (2 servings and I like spinach) for $2 if you have "the card", mustard greens similar size/pricing as the collards, and stuff like cilantro, parsley, for "da cheaps".

Those things are food. All are good boiled, many are good chopped and marinated, too. Oh and chard, I didn't check for chard, they may not have it but chard's good too.

No lettuce??

I guess we need to head off to the bunker, right?

I think the reason we believe the stores are empty is because we are expecting them to be empty. The real shortages have even begun and we already have weekly posts on food "shortages".

Think about rain and the sky is always cloudy.

PS. Don't bother with that iceberg lettuce crap. It has no nutrients. You're better off eating snow (at least the snow is free).

Romaine, now that's a decent lettuce.

Or collards as I_Like_Plants pointed out. But then again, my mother is from Alabama...so I might not be the most unbiased source for that sort of advice.

I never had collards until pretty recently, and they're good! Same goes for black-eyed peas, grits, and probably a few other things, and you know what? They're good!

Now I mentioned parsley. PARSLEY? Well, eat at a middle-eastern restaurant and you'll learn parsley can be a staple food. In some cuisines basil almost is, too. In others, prickly pear pads are sliced and cooked like green beans.

Iceberg lettuce is just awful, it's just not food.

If you haven't had a eggs, grits, gravy, biscuits, and bacon breakfast...you've been missing out on some good eats.

My grandparents live in Virginia, so yeah.

I see all these people eating bagels and drinking coffee every morning. It's a real human tragedy.

Hey grits, eggs, bacon or ham or corned beef hash, and some coffee and maybe some OJ is a GOOD breakfast to get some hard work done on!

Maybe not but it has some fiber. Good for "regularity", if you know what I mean.

kelee,

This is anecdotal but the Navy guys I work with here in Ireland and who are involved in fishery protection tell me that the seas around ireland are just about fished out. I assume it's a similar situation almost everywhere.

It is not acedotal ... natural fishery depletion is real. It has been one of the key guiding forces in Japan/US/EU behind artificial fisheries. We ate everyting ... time to eat each other (hopefully it will not come to that)

3 Hurricanes Close Nearly 300 Stores, but Retailer Still Achieves Record Results

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. yesterday reported its lowest quarterly earnings growth in four years, reflecting costs from three powerful hurricanes and higher energy prices. But analysts remained optimistic that sales during the holiday shopping season would be strong.

...skip...

...high fuel prices increased the company's operating costs -- and may have made shoppers think twice about pulling out their wallets. Wal-Mart's many low- to middle-income customers are the most likely to be affected by the rising gas prices.

I would have expected a small spike in October/November sales for blankets and space heaters.

Retailers are very nervous

Some think it's worse to have the heating bills arriving after Christmas. Uncertainty may be more of a damper than knowing the worst.
