I wouldn't know a "loner" if I saw one. I don't talk to enough people to differentiate the loners from the socialites.

Are we being watched?

Unread postby Pfish » Thu 22 Dec 2005, 12:17:55

With the extension of the Patriot Act I was wondering if the government monitors this board for “strange behavior.” Can’t be that hard to track down an IP address, mail and name. Do you feel safe in posting here? I wouldn’t put it past the present (or future) administrations. One another board for fishing, a poster who works for the Department of Homeland Security was called into his bosses office and politely asked not to post reports. He declined and still has his job. But it could be a reminder to be careful what you post....

This is a public message board. I imagine members of any goverment are welcome to sign up and read the posts. I suppose if they get paid while they read the posts, they are "monitoring" the board.

I'd be more worried about someone reading about my preps, figuring out where I live, and breaking in to steal my stuff than about secret goverment agents tracking me down for excercising my right to free, but generally inconsequential, speech.

There was previously a thread about where most viewers ip's came from and there was a fair number that where interesting. I'd almost guarantee that we're being monitored. Any of the conspiracy guessing about the future and possible terrorist attacks against oil infrastructure posts should contain enough keyword hits to have this site monitored. Google could pull the info together and be worried so I'd guess the NSA is doing just fine.

Of course not. The .gov has better things to do than spy on its own citizens, and it would need warrants and whatnot before a search of your computer is in order.

Yes, I think we are being watched.

As per my technical thread, the site www.oilcast.com is still being blocked by the DNS used by xtramsn, which serves many other small ISPs in New Zealand.

Intelligence agencies have been obsessed with PO since the 1970s. I have no doubts that all the major PO sites have active daily human monitoring, if for no other reason, to use the information as another source of intel.

The famous Pentagon Papers secret history of the Vietnam war was full of published newspaper articles that became classified after the fact by dint of being included in the history. No doubt some of the best technical posts on this site are now classified.

All text online is monitored for keywords and key phrases, get used to it. Nobody is 'reading' it unless it is red-flagged by NSA artificial intelligence based snoop software.

I doubt they will be too concerned about people 'building lifeboats'.

Who would want to watch us specifically (agency) and why?

Who here is saying anything different, generally speaking, than Matt Simmons? Are they "watching" him? It seems to me like he was invited to the White House, and our message isn't substantially different from his.

I can't think of even a quasi-legitimate reason for any government agent to be here monitoring our discussion, aside from simply to learn and gather intelligence about peak oil in the same way we are here. That is unless the agencies of our government are trying to hide these things, and they want to find out who knows & what they know & what they plan to do about it.

right now we're mostly a bunch of doomers and life boat builders but as things get worse the board is likely to pick up a lot of new people and many of them won't be as prepaired and docile as we may be. They'll want to be well established at monitoring activities here incase it becomes something less innocent in the future.
