$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dissident', 'w')here is the capacity to transition transportation to natural gas? If 71% of the US oil consumption goes into transportation, then the need would be for about 72 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas to replace it.
Your assumption that all US transportation will somehow magically "transition" from 100% gasoline to 100% natural gas is overly simplistic. The ongoing transition away from gasoline to NG is likely to be long, expensive and difficult and involve only parts of the transportation network.
For instance, I'm currently visiting Barcelona, Spain, where gas is $10 bucks a gallon. In response:
1. The public bus system here runs on CNG
2. Some cars also use CNG. Some are electric. Some are hybrids or are multifuel capable.
3. There are also subways and light rail running on electricity
4. Many many people use small motorcyles and scooters to commute instead of cars. These run on gas but can get 80-100 mpg.
5. The cars themselves are smaller than US cars, saving more gas.
6. The city itself is planned and organized to encourage travel by foot and mass transit, rather than by cars.

Barcelona---where you take a CNG bus to the beach!
