In a Senate floor speech laced with sarcasm and stings, the Arizona Republican aimed especially harsh fire at the tea party Wednesday.

McCain said the movement is "foolish" to think a balanced budget amendment could pass before the August 2 deadline. At one point, McCain read from an op-ed in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal. That article referred to activists as "tea party hobbits" – the little people who inhabit Middle-earth in the Lord of the Rings series.

McCain – 2008's Republican presidential nominee – also blasted as "bizarre" an idea supported by current GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, though McCain did not mention her by name.

McCain's fiery language comes amid competing Democratic and Republican plans to reduce the deficit.

As House Speaker John Boehner frantically pieces together a plan to rescue the nation from financial disaster next week, members of the Tea Party movement who helped propel Republicans back into power last fall are calling for his head.

“Boehner must go,” Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips said in his blog on Wednesday, calling the speaker a “big government Republican” who “worships at the altar of massive spending.”

“We need a speaker who is a leader. We need someone with courage and vision. Boehner has none of those qualities. He is not a leader,” Phillips wrote. “John Boehner simply wishes to be the manager in chief of the welfare state. His vision of the GOP and the speakership involves golfing, drinking and not rocking the boat.”

How soon the Ad hom deleted. forget the 2010 elections and try to re-write history. The Tea Party isn't going to disappear anytime soon. Establishment Republicans would be well advised to remember that. Boehner can be replaced with someone more in line with true conservatism. In the book, "The Fourth Turning" the authors analyze history in terms of generations, recognizing a recurring pattern of four generations, and an 80 to 90 year cyclical recurrence of four economic phases, recovery, peak, decline and crisis, which full cycle overlaps the generations. We are in the crisis period now, which began about 2006 with the peak of the real estate bubble. The crisis periods resolve themselves in violent conflict; 1775 American Revolution, 1861 Civil War, 1941 World War II, and the next violent period due sometime around 2015 - 2020.

One of the things the authors point out that the people who occupy the seats of power during the crisis period are uncompromising, which is one of the reasons that the crisis erupts in violence. The generation that was born before 1941 is fading away, with few of them, with their compromising inclinations, remaining in power. They are being replaced with the baby boomer generation, and this is a spoiled generation, unwilling to compromise. Look at the old fellows like McCain who pride themselves on being able to compromise, compared to those drawn from the next generation like Obama and Boehner. The political battles should become progressively more divisive over the next several years.

Combine the the pain and suffering that comes during the crisis period with the uncompromising attitude of many of those in power, and you have the mix for violence. If you don't notice the growing division in this country, you are not paying attention.

It is funny that McCain, who physically looks and moves like something out of Harry Potter would be calling other people Hobbits.

Yep those dumb Tea Partiers. 6 months ago the president wanted a "clean" debt limit increase with no attachments. That was not to be. Now the question is how much to be cut. O presented a pathetic budget that was rejected by his own Democrat controlled Senate. Seems to me the Tea Party is guiding if not controlling the debate at this point.

Actually, I don't think the Republicans are any more serious about balancing the budget or holding the line on debts than are the Democrats. They control the House, so all they need to do is just refuse to increase the debt limit, period. Spending would come to a halt. But you can bet, after all the theater is over, they will vote to increase the debt limit and any spending cuts will be illusory.

Maybe even the President, as Commander in Chief of the army would be forced to end these insane wars and close all those 900+ military bases on foreign soil left over from WWII. Maybe, if we were really lucky, the entire federal government would shut down and we would be free of their tyranny. Of course the tyranny of the States would still be there, but at least I can personally talk to my State Representative and Senator. I had sent an email to each of my two federal Senators and my Representative early in the debt debate, and got back canned responses which glossed over their position so I couldn't tell how they stood . When Obama suggested people contact their representatives, I again sent emails, and got back the identical canned responses; clearly, they really don't listen, probably not even reading the details of the communications they receive, and only try to placate everyone with these general bull answers. After all, their job is to stay in power and increase their wealth as much as possible while giving the big government largesse and privileges to the select few who can buy their votes.
