Hi Sheb, welcome.

Not much call for subs here in the Ozarks but it will be nice to have your input in the planning forum. There are lots of smart folks around this board but two heads are better than one they say.

Feel free to bump up any of the older threads you come across to add your perspective and expertise.

Good luck in your new endeavor!

Thank you, Pops. You're right, many aspects of submarines (having been to see on an Ohio-class) are a little out of context, you would be surprised how many of their systems have alot to give when it comes to future energy and self sufficiency. They are more like space-ships than sea ships (only with significantly less heat transfer problems). Especially when it comes to water distallation and power supply (once one realizes the reactor is simply a heat source in the system that could easily be replaced (by solar, wood burning, etc). And, in more dire scenarios--CO2 scrubbers (amazing and *simple* systems!).

But when it comes to living in a sustainable manner, off the Petrochemical grid, those things are not much more than gadget-wizardry. The real magic is knowing the cycles of nature, being able to grow food, and stay warm. I am glad this site has so many folks willing to share their knowledge:)

Hi RogerFox,
Nervous is good and perfectly natural but this is how I describe it.
It is like awakening from 1000 years of sleep.
It is like when babies are born, they are all cold, shaking, exhausted and frightened...
It is like the realization of another world and that the world you currently inhabit is an illusion.
It is like falling in a dream and not being able to learn to like it 8)

This realization can be a beautiful thing yet it can also be an horrible and ugly beast that never sleeps and never has enough of you to eat.

Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Oh come on, thats no reason to not listen to him. Doomers might end up being right. That would be a shame, never developing a presence in space, never getting to those resources in space, & shifting gears back to a resource driven economy. >sigh<

But I am sure that we will watch it all play out in the coming years. One way or the other.

Actually, I did have second thoughts after I shot that post off. I don't want to stifle anyone who is taking the time and putting out energy to participate in this invaluable resource. Gideon, my apologies.

Welcome Roger.

There is quite a range of opinions here, from possible apocalypses to possible solutions; big picture and small so dig in, make your own assessment and plan.

And nervous is good. IIRC, your palms sweat because it helped your ancestors climb that tree faster when the boogieman was after them – at least that is what the Darwinians say.

Hey Aaron, what does the chart for May 2006-April 2007 look like?

New Member--Survival Questions

Postby jasmineflowers » Wed 02 May 2007, 00:05:31

Hi Everyone!

What a wonderfully essential resource this website provides. Thank you to those who created it, maintain it, and participate in it.

I'll admit I'm new to all of these peak oil theories...but I get it.

Here's my question for this thread...or for a reference. Where can I learn what I need to learn about what I need to do to prepare for the post oil world?

I've already been looking into first aid/EMT courses, gardening, building a greenhouse, self-defense...I know there is so much more. Where is the best place to live? What should I stockpile? How do I purify water? Will a ham radio work post oil?

What else should I learn about?

What are the things you are doing to fully prepare?

Thanks!

There's a lot of good advice in the Planning for the Future forum, here: http://www.peakoil.com/forum8.html

Most of your questions are answered there, but a lot of them you're going to have to figure out for yourself. I'd say you have a pretty good head start on 99% of people just by "getting it".

Good luck.

Hello,

Me and my family are relocating to an ecovillage and we think people are in the denial/rationalization phase for thinking they can be self sufficient all alone or try to maintain in an area that was unsustainable from the get go like most of suburbia or the cities it was built around.

Surely, if all the world had some leadership and we pulled together and did the things we need to do blah blah blah...
It doesnt matter if you have tomatoes or lettuce when all of your neighbors do not...

Intentional community/ecovillage. It may be right for you but then again you may think I am crazy yet since this world is absolutely insane at the moment, thats actually a compliment to peakers :)

Yes - Use the search feature and it works best if you choose to "search by thread topic only" usually.

Hello Jasmineflowers,

Don't think, and don't say "post oil world", peak doesn't mean running out of oil, it means running out of readily available cheap oil. Some people will always be able to get liquid fuels. The fuel will just be darned expensive.

That being said, good resources depend on what your predictions for the future entail.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Its rather unfortunate to me that so many visits are from America. I would have liked to see the viewers spread out over a larger section of the globe.

But thats certainly a variable outside of the control of PO.com and its staff.
