Hello to all that frequent peakoil.com
Long time lurker (since about oct 2005), first time poster. I check these boards at least 3 times a week and it’s been a pleasure reading all your opinions.
I’ve never really felt the need to post myself, as pretty much everything I could want to know is here somewhere already, all the major issues are covered and then some. I thank you all for your input and for helping educate me to the reality of the world we live in, it’s truly changed my life and state of mind for the better. This might be my one and only post on these boards, I just wanted to show some gratitude.
There are too many people to thank individually, but I would like to give a special shout out to MonteQuest, who I feel has done more then anyone on these boards to help spread both knowledge and free thinking. Your comments are well informed, realistic and open minded and I’ve enjoyed reading your posts and blogs. The fact that to this day you still post and help others find information that they need is appreciated by myself, I thank you sir.
Peakoil.com is far more then just a site about peak oil, it’s a wonderful place for all my apolitical news needs. I often see peak oil deniers accuse the ‘doomers’ or ‘powerdoomers’ of thinking that we think we are better and more intelligent for knowing about peak oil, and in my case I’d say that really is true, I’m a far more educated person now then I was 2 years ago from following the situation. The reason being is it has totally encouraged me to read up on everything from politics to history to environmental issues that I would otherwise have not touched on. I learnt far more from this site and its’ posters then I ever did at school or from the media.
Even before my peak oil knowledge I was pretty disgruntled with the world. I hated the wasteful life’s we lead and knowing that it comes at the expense of millions of others across the globe who have suffered from our greedy self fulfilling life styles. What adds insult to injury is that many of us in the western world are still not happy… we just are left with far to much time to think about ourselves and dwell in self pity. The documentary crude impact touched on this, the myth that having more stuff will make you happier is just insane, but for years I was brainwashed by this thinking myself. I feel freer now I have broken this mindset, and I consume as little as I possibly can. My last vice is is my pc and internet connection, that I use as an information tool to prepare for what’s to come.
I used to work in a bar/restaurant and this is just one of many industries where waste is painfully in your face. The vast amount of food that is wasted is just mind-blowing, to think that we are facing topsoil erosion when a colossal amount of vegetables grown are simply just decoration on someone’s plate that will be thrown away. Also in this bar we had bottle recycling bins in the carpark, about 15 seconds walk from the establishment. But yet, all our bottles would be thrown right into the skips because it was easier… this always bothered me but now it simply makes me mad. I know it’s too late for action like this to affect our situation, it’s just more peoples ignorance and lack of caring that gets to me.
If I had a pound/dollar for every time I heard ‘I don’t care I’ll be dead by then’ (even from those with kids!) I’d be a rich man. Well, seems these people might well not be dead by then, wonder what they will have to say about it when TSHIF.
Again, thanks to everyone that makes this site possible.
