No. Maybe he meant equivalent zones in another country, for all we know. Also, Zone 5 in Ohio can represent a very different climate from Zone 5 in Washington State.

I'm sorry about the post. I guess it read like a riddle. I filled out the little location box. I thought it would just show up. I'm in Western New York near Corning. Or if you know the area Wellsville. The other things were just questions that I anticipated. I was just looking for suggestions.

Ahh western NY. My stepmother comes from Olean, NY. You yankees are fine and able can-do types. Welcome to the PO!

Actually I was born in Dansville, lived in Horseheads and Elmira. you are living where I expect to return. Welcome and soon to be neighbor.

Try not to let the secret out about that region. It's damn near perfect.

Aqua. Muchos Muchos Aqua. Bueno agua.

To answer your questions (with my limited ability):
That region has very nice root crop soils in the river valleys. The hills can grow corn and wheat and such but the yields aren't phenominal. It is traditionally dairy country and prior to that inhabited by my ancestors on mom's side. Their lives were pretty stable, which speaks to the inherent qualities of the region.

I hope global warming doesn't muck it all up. Some projections show it turning pretty nasty.

We'll see (or our kids will)
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Welcome!

I'm from there, but not living there (western NY). I still have family there, so that's my backup plan. They have 30 acres with a gas well. That reminds me to ask about their maintenance plan.

Such a beautiful place. I ditto on fruit and nut trees. Animals too, if you have pasture and time. My family did meat goats for awhile, big market evolving for that. Certainly chickens.
Vegetables do well, depending on the growing season's weather. Some years are better than others. But of course that goes everywhere.

The thing I can't take is 6 months of cold and snow. I live in a more temperate climate now and have got kind of spoiled. But I could go back if I had to. Ideally with a passive solar house and lots of wood to burn. I think to live there in the future, one will have to have a lot of the old-time know-how. We had good maple syrup when I was a kid!
Awful taxes, though.

Had no idea about you guys, MD and PM. Small world.

"what's the scoop?"

Wow, what a question! Where do we begin??

Keep browsing. Keep your sanity and humor... if you can.

I've been reading about this for four years now. 2007 was the year I feared. It's here.

Welcome, lady-t.

Two of the best books are Powerdown by Richard Heinberg, and Half Gone by Jeremy Leggett (can't remember the US title, sorry) look in the book/media reviews section of this forum for more details.

One of the most important sites is ASPO www.peakoil.net

I don't know how much you know already, but those are good starting points. For more you might try checking out our beloved Montequest's posts here.

If you are new, then expect to get, er some sort of Peak Oil Syndrome: the concepts are frightening and depressing, but you get over it. I've been there, and so have many other posters here.

cheers

Welcome Lady t,

Until we see otherwise it most definately appears as though the world peaked in conventional oil production in 2005/2006 and this would be the traditional indication of the basic definition of Peak Oil.

I agree KJ, when I first came here I took my own little survey and after about the first month or so 07/08' was when I figured TSWHTF (the crap would hit the fan) and yes its looking like a very troublesome beginning to what could be a very scary year with the US dollar hitting new lows, large declines from some of the largest producing regions and a bunch of other bad things converging like the realist had predicted.

There are no pessimist here just doomers, realist and cornucopians. Good luck on your journey Lady t and try not to think we are all crazy 8)

Hi Lady-t,

"What's the scoop?"

Peak oil is all about recognizing that we will start to feel the limits to our oil supply long before we reach the limits. Ie. Right about now.

That's it really,

Don't go all doomerish about peak oil, sure it's a problem, but compared to war, global warming, poverty, AIDS, environmental degradation, pollution, over population, nuclear weapons, income inequality, and emergent epidemics it's an easy one to fix.

thanks for the warm welcome,

i am not totally new to the concept of peak oil, have been studying it for about 2 months. in my spare time.

i am into my horses goats llama and two dogs

i love to fish and ride and be outdoors. i am married with great sons who are 13 and 22

my husband and son think i am nuts HAHA so does my mom

i fully expect a heartfelt apology from them later.

i just started putting together my own little dairy herd of goats and two wind generators. i don't have time for a garden again right now but when tshtf and i am out of business i will. i have 50 pullets and 10 roosters ordered and will be here the end of the month.

i want to learn how to make my own biodiesel. i can't do complicated.

unfortunately i am not what is considered "girly" i LIKE tractors and farm life. i haul hay and have a tack store. who knows maybe it will not go out of business if everyone reverts to riding horses again.

i am convinced that the world as we know it now is going to change drastically in the not so distant future and i am trying to get my shit together before it hits the fan
