Award-winning Iran-Contra journalist Robert Parry has been told by a source close to Vladimir Putin that Russia has threatened Turkey with the use of tactical nuclear weapons if it launches a joint invasion of Syria with Saudi Arabia.
Writing for Consortium News, Parry warns that the risk of the United States and its allies escalating the conflict in Syria to rescue rebels who are now on the verge of defeat could spark “World War III”.
“If Turkey (with hundreds of thousands of troops massed near the Syrian border) and Saudi Arabia (with its sophisticated air force) follow through on threats and intervene militarily to save their rebel clients, who include Al Qaeda’s Nusra Front, from a powerful Russian-backed Syrian government offensive, then Russia will have to decide what to do to protect its 20,000 or so military personnel inside Syria,” writes Parry.
“A source close to Russian President Vladimir Putin told me that the Russians have warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Moscow is prepared to use tactical nuclear weapons if necessary to save their troops in the face of a Turkish-Saudi onslaught. Since Turkey is a member of NATO, any such conflict could quickly escalate into a full-scale nuclear confrontation.”
Parry’s background suggests the information should be treated seriously. He covered the Iran-Contra scandal for the Associated Press and Newsweek and was later given a George Polk award for his work on intelligence matters.
According to Parry, although President Obama has “sought to calm Erdogan down and made clear that the U.S. military would not join the invasion,” he has been “unwilling to flatly prohibit such an intervention”.
Moscow’s alleged threat to repel a Turkish invasion of Syria with nuclear weapons follows comments by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in which he warned of a new world war if the United States and its allies send ground troops into Syria.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia have both signaled they are considering a ground invasion of Syria in order to aid refugees and so-called “moderate rebels” fighting against the Assad regime.
Last week, Turkish officials called for a “safe zone” to be established within Syria to allow refugees to flee Russia’s advance, although the United States argued that such a corridor could not be set up without a no fly zone.
Saudi Arabia is currently conducting the biggest wargames the region has seen for a quarter of a century. Northern Thunder involves 150,000 troops from 20 countries and is viewed by some as a precursor to a possible invasion of Syria.
Earlier this month, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told CNN that President Bashar al-Assad will have to be removed “by force” if the political process fails.
Despite official denials that the kingdom possesses nuclear weapons, Saudi political analyst told RT’s Arabic network last week that the Saudis have indeed obtained the bomb and that tests will be conducted soon.

Putin is a detector who has killed oposition leaders and Journalist who dare against him. He is now killing in Syria with Asad. I don’t what Asad wants to rule after the war.
Putin can’t dare to ues nuks. He can’t stand the US. Don’t Forget the might of Britain, France, Germany etc.
Why waste our time. The Americans have played him and he is spending the remaining cash he has to flying bombs in Support. It’s not easy today with Russians and it willn’t improve anytime soon. By the end of this the economy will finally colaps and Putin’s western Propaganda will have not effect anymore and he will then start counting his days.

It seems that images of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have become vague recollections. The combined power of nuclear arsenals today makes Little Boy and Fat Man look like firecrackers. If a nuclear war begins there will be no winners. What is happening in the world and specifically the middle east is not a sporting event with fans from either side dressed in their favorite fatigues and waving a nuke.
Mwansa on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 3:31 pm
There’s no proof Putin said that. I am also surprised people think there can be a winner if America and Russia went to a nuclear war. It just shows how brainwashed you Americans are; worse than even the level of North Koreans.

This diminutive man called Putin thinks he can use Nukes against Turkey and Saudi Arabia with impunity! Does he really think that Turkey and Arabia will stand Idly by without recourse. Mr. Putin, think before you speak. It will take Almighty God Himself to intervene and stop all this madness that is taking place in the Middle East. Man is incapable to stop war, it is inherently built in our DNA structure to annihilate one another. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, The King of Host, The God of Israel is the ONLY one that can stop man from completely eradicating each other. Look to Jesus Christ for salvation, and you can be saved from destruction.

PROTOCOL No. 7
1. The intensification of armaments, the increase of police forces – are all essential for the completion of the aforementioned plans. What we have to get at is that there should be in all the States of the world, besides ourselves, only the masses of the proletariat, a few millionaires devoted to our interests, police and soldiers.
2. Throughout all Europe, and by means of relations with Europe, in other continents also, we must create ferments, discords and hostility. Therein we gain a double advantage. In the first place we keep in check all countries, for they will know that we have the power whenever we like to create disorders or to restore order. All these countries are accustomed to see in us an indispensable force of coercion. In the second place, by our intrigues we shall tangle up all the threads which we have stretched into the cabinets of all States by means of the political, by economic treaties, or loan obligations. In order to succeed in this we must use great cunning and penetration during negotiations and agreements, but, as regards what is called the “official language,” we shall keep to the opposite tactics and assume the mask of honesty and complacency. In this way the peoples and governments of the GOYIM, whom we have taught to look only at the outside whatever we present to their notice, will still continue to accept us as the benefactors and saviours of the human race.
UNIVERSAL WAR
3. We must be in a position to respond to every act of opposition by war with the neighbors of that country which dares to oppose us: but if these neighbors should also venture to stand collectively together against us, then we must offer resistance by a universal war.
4. The principal factor of success in the political is the secrecy of its undertakings: the word should not agree with the deeds of the diplomat.
5. We must compel the governments of the GOYIM to take action in the direction favored by our widely conceived plan, already approaching the desired consummation, by what we shall represent as public opinion, secretly promoted by us through the means of that so-called “Great Power” – THE PRESS, WHICH, WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS THAT MAY BE DISREGARDED, IS ALREADY ENTIRELY IN OUR HANDS.
6. In a word, to sum up our system of keeping the governments of the goyim in Europe in check, we shall show our strength to one of them by terrorist attempts and to all, if we allow the possibility of a general rising against us, we shall respond with the guns of America or China or Japan. (The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905; Japan; Iraq and Afghanistan – Ed.).

Russia has threatened to use nukes before…on Finland for deploying their small fleet.
I have no doubt at all that Putin has made this threat.
I told many people during the so-called “Fall of the Soviet Union” do not trust Russia. It’s a ruse.
I was right. NOW we are seeing their true colors and the stupidity of our 90s policy toward Russia.
Rob Watson on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 5:10 pm
Putin would be forced to use tactical nukes (low order ground detonations with high explosive yield in a localized area). Turkey has the 4th largest land force in the world as we speak and Putin would need an equalizer using advanced technologies. The first targets he will choose are Incirlik and Princilik Air Bases, also used by NATO. He will probably inform the US to evacuate it’s forces from those locations or he won’t be responsible for casualties. Large army installations at Mardin and Batman would certainly follow in short order. The Russians would quickly establish air superiority over the Turkish Air Force and launch a counterattack inside Turkey from any point along the eastern border. Syrians and Kurds inside Turkey would form an effective 5th Column operation and Turkey would quickly be calling for international assistance. The Republic of Turkey has no friends at all… it has cultivated enemies on all its borders for almost 100 years. It is likely barring direct US involvement, Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria would join with Russia in attacking Turkey to settle long-standing border disputes.

OH — and threatening a NATO country with nukes is an ACT OF WAR!!!

I wouldn´t put too much stake in this claim not unless it was official. I don´t do hearsay for the sake of propaganda. If Putin addresses his Assembly in Moscow and mentions this, then I would take it into consideration. The only time NATO or anyone should really take him serious regarding tactical nukes would be if he releases direct authority to his field Generals and if he officially moves an additional amount of divisions to the western front. With Russia, you can´t rely on words only, you have to watch and see if they move and most important, how they move.
Perry on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 5:16 pm
Putin does not need nukes to put Erdogan in its place, all it have to do is to provide weapons to Kurds. If any thing Russia will invade Turkey from the north. But then if others come in to the stage in favor of Turkey there is a possibility of wider conflict. Unfortunately west does not have good intention toward Russia and Russia with all its abilities is ready and willing to defend itself.

Why should Saudi Arabia, a Sunni moslem country be allowed to attack a sovereign country Syria, which allows all religions including Christians and Jews to practice their faith unmolested? Why should Turkey, another Sunni moslem country be allowed to invade Syria …? International law is very clear, the USA has no right to attack or support the invasion of Syria. Russia has a military base in Syria, legitimate under international law. If its troops are under attack by countries breaching internatinal law, it can choose to defend itself with tactical nuclear weapons. It is amazing that the rulers of Saudi Arabia, have the gas to inform the world that a legitimate President of an independent country, must be removed. This madness will result in a long overdue lesson to both Saudi Arabia and Turkey. If the rest of NATO want a nuclear war that can destroy most of mankind, the citizens of those countries can choose to allow the contagion or choose to call their leaders to order. Insanity is afoot.

The Russians are doing what should be done in Syria. They are taking care of business. Putting our guys in harms way over the situation there is not a good idea. It will not benefit the American cause, out stability in the world arena. Please be advised that Turkey is not our friend. They have done everything to oppose our cause. Read up on it on non-US news sites. Some info does get reported on US sites but not all. Bottom line is the Russians have terrorists on the run. Let the cards fall as they may bit Assad is not going to go and he doesn’t have to. This will get resolved as things unfold. Nothing to worry about, as long as Turkey is kept out of it.
joe on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 6:23 pm
Turkey would have a very hard time expaining a legal reason to invade Syria. Theres no evidence that Assad has ever attacked Turkey.
As usual Sunni Jihadi Islam gets a pass when it serves the wests interests. Turks forget their history. Islam broke the Turkish empire because the Caliphate could not live with modernity and so it would be again. Erdogan is another Assad in the making. So many hypocrites on all sides, God sees them all. Greedy bas***ds the lot of them.
Once the millions of immigrants flooding Europe destroy and take over that continent how will America survive when Islam is done using America to fight Russia? Saudis and Israelis have one thing in common, they both say the US is the best democracy money can buy.
HA!

WOW! The some of the comments on here prove that the US brainwashing propaganda has worked totally! It also is proof that humans are too stupid to deserve to survive the coming bottleneck. It will be extinction by suicide.
This is NOT a war that Americans will just play at and be safe. Nukes can reach all of the world in less than an hour at 15,000 Mph. The ‘new’ nukes are 1,000 times as powerful as the ones the US dropped on civilians in WW2. There will be nothing alive above bacteria and virus when it is over. Nothing.

Nony on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 6:58 pm
I don’t know which side I’m on. Like the Turks better than the Russkis or the Syrians. But then they are also attacking the Kurds. And I like the Kurds. But then these are the more commie Kurds, so I don’t like them as much as the other Kurds. I don’t like Assad, but I don’t like ISIS more.
Whole thing seems like a mess. Should we stay out or pick a side?
P.s. I still think Putin is making more bark than he can bite. The US has much more expeditionary power than he does. He will try to maximize his role, but he doesn’t really have the firepower in region for serious war. That’s why the nukes comment. And he won’t use them–lot of studies of the Soviets during the Cold War showed that for all their talk and little games they were very careful not to want to start the big one.
Jay D on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 7:00 pm
No proof or true evidence Putin said this.
Even if Turkey and Saudi Arabia did go into Syria. I dont think the Russians would so quickly turn to tactical nukes. My guess would be them relying on there Navy to bombard strategic targets in Saudi and Turkey.
After that the Saudis and Turks will cease fire. The US will not go in without a proper UN vote.
