Award-winning Iran-Contra journalist Robert Parry has been told by a source close to Vladimir Putin that Russia has threatened Turkey with the use of tactical nuclear weapons if it launches a joint invasion of Syria with Saudi Arabia.
Writing for Consortium News, Parry warns that the risk of the United States and its allies escalating the conflict in Syria to rescue rebels who are now on the verge of defeat could spark “World War III”.
“If Turkey (with hundreds of thousands of troops massed near the Syrian border) and Saudi Arabia (with its sophisticated air force) follow through on threats and intervene militarily to save their rebel clients, who include Al Qaeda’s Nusra Front, from a powerful Russian-backed Syrian government offensive, then Russia will have to decide what to do to protect its 20,000 or so military personnel inside Syria,” writes Parry.
“A source close to Russian President Vladimir Putin told me that the Russians have warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Moscow is prepared to use tactical nuclear weapons if necessary to save their troops in the face of a Turkish-Saudi onslaught. Since Turkey is a member of NATO, any such conflict could quickly escalate into a full-scale nuclear confrontation.”
Parry’s background suggests the information should be treated seriously. He covered the Iran-Contra scandal for the Associated Press and Newsweek and was later given a George Polk award for his work on intelligence matters.
According to Parry, although President Obama has “sought to calm Erdogan down and made clear that the U.S. military would not join the invasion,” he has been “unwilling to flatly prohibit such an intervention”.
Moscow’s alleged threat to repel a Turkish invasion of Syria with nuclear weapons follows comments by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in which he warned of a new world war if the United States and its allies send ground troops into Syria.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia have both signaled they are considering a ground invasion of Syria in order to aid refugees and so-called “moderate rebels” fighting against the Assad regime.
Last week, Turkish officials called for a “safe zone” to be established within Syria to allow refugees to flee Russia’s advance, although the United States argued that such a corridor could not be set up without a no fly zone.
Saudi Arabia is currently conducting the biggest wargames the region has seen for a quarter of a century. Northern Thunder involves 150,000 troops from 20 countries and is viewed by some as a precursor to a possible invasion of Syria.
Earlier this month, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told CNN that President Bashar al-Assad will have to be removed “by force” if the political process fails.
Despite official denials that the kingdom possesses nuclear weapons, Saudi political analyst told RT’s Arabic network last week that the Saudis have indeed obtained the bomb and that tests will be conducted soon.

Yawn. Hysteria. the US says All The Time, “All options are on the table.” This is a similar situation. It’s not called Russian Roulette by accident.

I’ve read several different accounts of this story about Russian nukes. Yes, they have them by the thousands. Yes, they probably have tactical nukes in the area of Turkey. but then, the Us supposedly has nukes in turkey also. Who knows for sure? Certainly not any of the ‘news’ outlets. We will only know when it happens.
It would be interesting to know how many nukes the Russians have in subs off the American coasts … A hot WW3 will be over in about an hour. No winners.
Truth Has A Liberal Bias on Sat, 27th Feb 2016 9:43 pm
Putin just has to cut off the gas and the grain and Turkey would fold within hours. As well a few transport planes of Semtex and RPGs to the Kurds would give Turkey so many problems they wouldn’t have time for much else. Russia can easily knock Turkey to its knees. No need for Nukes at all.
Nony on Sat, 27th Feb 2016 9:46 pm
Yawn, Putin won’t do shit if Turkey calls his bluff. Putin has no land corridor to move troops into Syria. He doesn’t have naval strength in the Med. Syria is far from his southern border and his small force was brought in by air and is very exposed. Turkey will chew up his people or ignore them, whatever they choose.
Putin isn’t going to start WW3 for a minor skirmish. The West is actually more inclined to escalate small things. He’ll screw around while he can. But if the objective is small and geographically distant, he won’t imperil the home land with WW3.
And he has no ability to influence the Turks conventionally either. The idea that he could move forces expeditiously through the Caucasus and invade ASia Minor is a joke. The Turks would chew him up on their home turf.

Nony, dear god, listen to yourself. “if turkey calls his bluff”? what are you talking about?? russia has said that such an invasion would cause an escalation. Which is true. It isn’t like Putin is daring them to come in or anything.
It’s all private and hearsay anyway. According to this dickwad (Parry, via INFOWARS for christ sake), IF Turkey and SA were to invade, and IF his troops were in danger, Putin has supposedly privately told Erdogan that he would protect his troops with tactical nukes. oooookay.
20,000 military personnel?? I haven’t even READ that. What’s the source for that?! And second, that’s like 19,985 airplane mechanics and 15 pilots. They are launching naval strikes from the Caspian Sea, and if I remember they have ships in Tartus, which is like halfway to Damascus!
The whole premise of Parry’s statements, the hysteria of Infowars, and your response to it, are just enormous piles of idiocy.
You’re talking about an imaginary war (Turkey directly fighting with Russia) to an imaginary threat (Putin to Erdogan) to an imaginary threat (Turkey & SA invading Syria full-on).
My nephews Pokemon games have more semblances of reality than your statement and this article. That’s the relevant issue, not whether Turkey could “chew up” the Russians.
And just to play your stupid, completely imagined hypothetical, If you think a full-on Turkey/Saudi Arabian invasion of Syria would be a minor event which Russia would ignore, you really are ridiculous. And if you don’t think Russia could bring significant forces to bear in Syria you are absolutely clueless. I’m not saying Turkey is not a fairly bad-ass military, and not on their home turf, but you do realize Russia has probably the second greatest military strength on the planet, after the US of course.
freak on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 12:45 am
This is a game of chess of many layers that we have know idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. Do not be surprised if a tactical nuke goes off in Turkey not by Russia but by SA, USA, Israel, or even Turkey to demonize Russia in the world.
We live in interesting times.

Davy on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 5:50 am
Turkey and Russia would chew each other up in a full blown war over Syria. Turkey has a huge modern army that is definitely a match for Russia on Turkey’s home turf. If Turkey moves into Syria and crosses red lines like moving on the Russian positions and Syrian leadership I would assume that is a pretext for Russia to use tac nukes. That option would be an expensive without a guarantee of a win. Tac nukes are small and would not eliminate a whole army. They would punish the Turks. Remember they must be delivered and it would take a large quantity. The ability to deliver so many tac nukes effectively in a war zone is a dubious undertaking.
If Russia uses such weapons I would imagine the Turks would destroy the Russians in place because that would be a red line for the Turks. It would take too long for Russia to organize logistics to protect its forces. We are talking small distances here for Turkey and large ones for Russia. I find it a sign of weakness that Russia is in the position it has to use tact Nukes to protect itself. That is obviously a sign of just how exposed Russia is in Syria.
In the air Turkey would overwhelm Russia in the beginning. Russia could then bring to bear its strategic forces to disable many of Turkey’s bases. This would not be cheap and would be at great expense for all involved. Russia has little chance of moving troops by sea since the Bosphorus can be closed. An attack overland would be a huge undertaking requiring a long time frame. It is uncertain how successful it would be and for what to punish the Turks? What is Russia going to do once it maybe moves through Turkey? Turkey is a very large country to move across.
What is more likely is Turkey would move on the northern areas of Syria including Aleppo. Turkey already has its unspoken ally in eastern Syria with ISIS. The Americans and NATO are not going to touch this conflict. They have no skin in it. They have no forces in position. If this type of conflict happened it would not be considered an article 5 event. Red lines will likely not be crosses but we could see escalations with significant costs involved. Neither Turkey nor Russia can afford this type of conflict. NATO cannot either because it is this kind of conflict that causes bad economic repercussions. Turkey depends on Russia for a significant amount of vital natural gas that could be shut in. An escalation in Syria is a black swan event that would likely bring down an already fragile global economy.

Turks can easily neutralize Russians in Syria and if Putin tries to interfere, Turks can close the straits and lock Russians in Black Sea. Don’t underestimate Turkish army. They have over 500 modern fighters a strong and modern navy and a powerful land force. Putin knows well that he has no chance against Turkish army. That’s why he speaks of nuclear weapons. But Turks have nukes as well under NATO agreement.

“Don’t underestimate Turkish army.”
The Turks have always had a pretty good military, it is part of their cultural tradition. That is why it is more likely that there will be Turkish troops around Erdogan’s palace than around Russian forces. Erdogan’s vision of a new Ottoman Empire, at the expense of the Turkish military, is probably not high on the priority list of many Turkish generals. Erdogan is a psychopathic idiot with visions of grandeur; just another CIA creation that didn’t work out very well.

Robert on Sun, 28th Feb 2016 10:10 am
Haha, just like he “did something” when Turkey shot down his plane with impunity. Look, Putin makes threats daily, and rarely follows through on them when his bluff is called. Putin won’t do anything, because Turkey isn’t a small, destitute country they can easily take advantage of. They are also a member of NATO and any attack on them will basically mean Russia stops existing as a country. Lastly, and perhaps most critically, Turkey controls the only sea way to Syria… the Bosphorus straight. Turkey is legally obligated to keep this through0way available to all, except in the event it is attacked, when they are allowed to close it. This cannot be reiterated more strongly, Russia has no way of reinforcing it’s forces in Syria if they lose the straight, and it’s tiny navy has no way of enforcing itself (especially when the US navy shows up, because NATO). Lose the Bosphorus, lose Syria, basically. It’s a bad proposition, since they would be attacking Turkey over the issue in Syria, so Russia won’t do it. Oh! by the way, The US keeps a rather sizeable supply of Nuclear warheads in Turkey (under the nuclear weapons sharing program), which NATO may go right ahead and decide to use if Putin is dumb enough to let that horse out of the barn.

Erdogan is a throwback kind of guy.His prestige and honor is so vital to him to his image in turkey,he just might cut off his nose to spite his face.putin is similar ,just not as stupid,in factputin is very smart. But putin doesn’t have the political backing as strong as the image he projects to the west in the former union. turkish saudi tide of foots in sudden attack will face full russian response.Tact nuke probably not needed, but if putin sees any chance of turk alliance success he will do WHATEVER it takes to stop syrian gov’t fromm falling. This is like poker. Ultimately putin can keep raising till erdogan can’t call. This could very well go low yield nuke. or chem. But it will not acknowledged by us as such.covered up and explained away as high tech extremely sophisticated conventional weapons.end game, erdogan goes down politically before stuff gets real bad.Erdogan doesn’t really see what his actions will cause or doesn’t care.too stupid to be afraid,no perspective on long term effects.he would be very comfortable as a ww 1 general,no feeling of responsibilty to lost lives ,as long as his and turkey’s honor was kept in tact. Western media is always looking for a way to portray Putin as a nuclear maniac. Since the facts never support that picture, they resort to printing rumor, speculation and misinterpretation to make the case.
Last year, during a visit to a classroom, a student asked Putin, “Are the Americans going to attack us too.” His reply was “No, Russia is a nuclear power so we are safe from attack”. No threat, just a repeat of the MAD concept we have touted for years. The next day, CNN and other American news outlets screamed “Putin threatens nuclear war!”
This story is based on an unfounded rumor from an unnamed source, interpreted in as threatening a way as possible and presented as fact.
The world should expect a response from Russia if we continue our aggression against the legal government of Syria and its allies, but the odds of Putin using nukes are next to none.

This all looks like staged drama to me, everybody playing a role, threats and counter threats, every word hitting the global media outlets just as intended. There is a very complex game going on in the Middle East and none of us have any idea what the rules are, which side any given player is on and certainly we don’t have any clue what the ultimate goal is EXCEPT of one thing we can be sure, and that is, it has something to do with oil and access to it. Pure drama, folks. Just sit back and watch the show. Like any mystery, it is fun to guess at what is happening and why, but let’s keep it real and not lose sight of the fact that guessing is all we have.
My guess: Russia, America, Turkey and other nations are in secret league together and in agreement on goals to be accomplished. Between the major players, they are attempting to carve out their designated areas of control and solidify their positions prior to full blown economic collapse. To do this, they are running a little game of deception, the goal being to draw certain factions and groups out into the open, gain their trust, manipulate them, and ultimately wipe them out like a bunch of rats. In the meantime, all of this creates a sense of fear and lead-up to war which as always gives the governments additional control over their own populaces. And this is all good for Putin who, presiding over a rapidly crumbling economy and dangerous internal pressures at home, benefits from being seen as a “big man” on the world stage.
Fun and games…
