Ya, well matt has been about as consistent as me when it comes to leaving. I don't think you can leave this place. I watched lots of people leave over the years and the all come back. This place is fucking addictive.

Giving shit up is overrated. In time we all will have to give it up. Might as well enjoy things while they last & not to try give them up prematurely or unnaturally due to anger or pride.

No one should mock Matt for this because we've all been guilty of this sort of thing at one time or another. I, for one, am glad he's still here. :)

I like Matt and his website. The thing that bugs me is sometimes it seems like his objective is to scare the crap out of people and then profit from their fear. That's something that every life insurance salesman in history has done, though, so it's not a mortal sin. It's just once you spend enough time with PO and the different positions on the issue, looking back at LATOC looks like a very one-sided presentation.

If Soylent Green is out on DVD, Matt should definitely add that to the roster of doom gear he sells.

Soylent Green? Is that the new healthy alternative? I should get me some of that!

It's kind of like that old Depression-era saying:

"Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Or turn your old sick neighbor into a nutrient rich paste"

I think that was how the saying goes. Or maybe that's the future PO Mad Max-era saying.

See why I love Matt now? And you too BigTex. I'm not saying I agree w/ his ideas (when I don't agree w/ someone strongly I usually plainly say, though these days I mostly just read thru the serious stuff cause I realize, like Socrates, I don't know sh!t, I just know what doesn't make sense to me) but I like having him around.

And yep, it's 10:24PM or a Saturday night & my GF is looking all cute in her night pants & my big t-shirt w/ no bra underneath (she never wears 'em at all actually) and here I am circle-jerkin' w/ you guys. And you know what? It's all good.

My problem? When I don't work for something (like my GF, like for all the luxuries I take for granted, like the rest of you), I get weaker. Weaker in that I don't appreciate enough. In that, it saps my willpower. That and the fucking Ritalin & slew of other colors of the fucking rainbow my mommy slipped into my orange juice when I was 6 & up. check this shit out

Tangent? Yeah, but it's on the subject of this forum. I'm looking forward to peak oil to give me challenges I'm going to have to rise up to. Cause if you're not rising up to a challenge, what's the fucking point?

talk about instant classics.

there's a technique that's worth learning, and that's avoiding flame wars. which will mean ignorring some posts.

my guess is that whoever is following Matt around flaming him does not do it for fun. maybe, but i doubt it. who cares about some guy that is concerned about preparing for Peak Oil/Energy Transition ?

it's like, who cares about my Signature, which has a link to various websites created by people who were injured by LASIK.

the only people who find that intimidating are people whose livelihoods are endangered by public knowledge of the existence of a large group of people injured by LASIK.

my guess is, the person that is flaming Matt gets paid to do it. by whom & why, i could only guess.

it's a COMPLIMENT, Matt. it means you've shown up on the radar screen and now someone is paid to follow you around and fling, as you say, ostrich poo (which, from a sustainable farming point of view, is probably worth looking into.)

a rough compliment perhaps, but a compliment, nonetheless.

If you made a Million or more that is your business, no one else's . So I vote stay here as I enjoy reading your point of view.

I'm a technical guy and do not have the talent to put some of the dots that you string together. Right or wrong you are entitled to your opinion and if someone buys your book or not it is THEIR decision.

I suspect those posing such arguments probable want to piss you off SO THAT you do leave.

So STAY :-)

It's possible. The more likely explanation is Big Tex is a certain archetypal personality that seems to frequent these forums. I'll call him "The Big Bag O- Resentment." I've encountered this a number of times. It's always:

A) a male who

B) initially learned about PO via LATOC

C) got really, really depressed (which is normal) but then

D) noticed I post personally on the forums and

E) decided he would work out his personal PO demons by attempting to "take me on".

(Since I actually reply to people's criticisms on the forums, that makes me more reachable than the other, more prominent, PO personalities like Kunstler or Simmons. And Mr. "Big Bag O' Resentment" wouldn't have the testicular fortitude to take on a billionaire anyway.)

F) always makes sure to mention suicide

As far as being on the forums late friday night: I'm here because my site (also my business) is down and as you might imagine I'm interested in what people here are saying about it, particularly in the other thread. BT is here scouring the forums in hopes of finding posts made during the first Bush administration where I look bad. Hey that's fine and all. It's just sort of weird.

I've never understood why people pick on Matt.

If it is because he's trying to make a buck on peak oil then so the fuck what? I thought you could make money on whatever you like in the USA if it is legal. Isn't that part of the American dream? At least he's obviously passionate about OUR cause.

Maybe someone could bring me up to speed on why this guy gets the gears from those whose goat he gets?

To drag this thread up is like talking to a friend you haven't seen in years and bringing up that time he wet his pants in grade 3. People sometimes say " I quit " and then for some reason or another they don't. Big deal.

Because he gets to sit on his ass and do some writing and make cash. Lots of useless tools think they are great writers.

Because he has been doom aware for quite awhile and thus had more time to prepare.

In short jealousy most likely.

Frankly if I am going to buy something anyways , why Matt is any different than any other merchant is beyond me.

I consider Matt's website to be essential reading. His HTML is often wonky and his spelling ALWAYS is, but I still check up on it every weekday.

And also, what makes him different than any other vendor?

I can't set up a website to save my life, I've tried. I admire anyone who can set one up and keep it working.

Now, if Matt's just too busy to spend time on this site, that's fine. I'm dropping off of stuff as I find new sites to spend time on. But don't let the asshats around here chase you off. remember:

i think it's worthwhile to look at the biochemistry of flaming.

i will use a thread where i'm designing a simple video surveillance system as an example.

in the process of asking the questions i need to ask, someone implied i'm not a good neighbor. if you saw a column of smoke in West Sonoma County last weekend, that was my neighbor barBQing. for health reasons, it worked out that my landlord told that neighbor, no more barBWing.

now, i could answer that post about me not being a good neighbor, and explain more about how the smoke was like the fog of San Francisco, etc. BUT i notice that as i do this,

A/ my epinephrine levels are rising.
B/ my shoulders are getting hunched, my blood pressure might be rising ... etc.

and all i want to do is throw together a (cute) little video surveillance system !

epinephrine is an adrenaline precursor; there is a correlation between your epinephrine levels & your risk of heart attacks. it relates to the management of stress & anxiety.

my initial reaction when i see this person say i'm not a good neighbor is, oh no, i got to defend myself.

but that way lies more stress. & more ephinephrine.

someone who i admire, a whistleblower, was almost killed by stress. and, i believe that that was part of the strategy used to silence him, to kill him with stress. he was a very effective whistleblower.

for reference, there is the movie "The Insider", about Dr. Jeffrey Ligand, who blew the whistle on the tobacco companies.

if the person(s) who is/are stalking Matt is paid, i think it's especially important to give them no opportunity to raise your blood level an inch. or however it's measured. if you're dealing with a paid suppressor of whistleblowers, their job is to stress you out & to waste your time. it's very important to not let them do that, if you have limited time & goals to achieve.

Matt,

I liked your work (some of it not my style, but I found it useful). I can see how it would be a tough gig to sustain. Once your message has gotten out there and has taken root, it will grow and propagate on its own.

Having to go through the process every week or so where you have to break down someones world view and convince them of something scary through flame attacks must be hard.

As the long emergency progresses, more people will 'wake up'. They will not welcome this wake up, nor will they thank those who helped them through this journey. The emotional response to something scary is to attack, preferably the easiest target. LATOC is an easy target as it comes across as scary and extreme (exactly those kinds of measures may well be needed in many parts of the world, sooner than any of us would like).

Your ideas will now sustain themselves without your presence. This is a compliment as it is hard thing to achieve. Other people can debate them. Other people can weather the flames with each new generation of would be awakened. Reality will make such debates easier to manage as time goes on.

Thankyou and Kind Regards

an odd place for a 1st post, but behavior like this fascinates me and my wife is off playing with goats.

also, when discussing the biochemistry of stress, it is important to note that epinephrine is adrenaline.
