I am fairly new to this site, but it has become an important resource for me. It has great value in developing world awareness of this critically important issue. I tend to ignore the irrelevant personal jabs because, among other reasons, this issue is essentially a scientific and social phenomenon. I like to stick to the facts; as for theories, to debate them to gain a better understanding of it all. I believe we are here on this site because we care, and want to make a difference. Among the whole world, we refuse to be flung off into the Olduvai Gorge.
From my viewpoint, however, this thread and a relatively few others seem like a grade school playground. Someone saying they are taking their ball and going home will not work: we cannot escape this issue unless we figure out a way to leave the planet. A bit telling about the nature of our species, really. When some get into a tiff like this, it does the world a disservice. This issue is far too crucial for this. Many new people like me are finding this site for the first time, and all who truly believe this is the biggest test facing humanity since the dawn of "civilization," as I now do, should act with upmost respect, clarity, and conviction. Giving others reasons to doubt the character (or bias or mental status) of who is saying it, unfortunately gives them reasons to doubt the truth of what they are saying. Be above reproach, and no one can deny you. It will force them to focus on what you are saying and re-examine their own ideas, if they do not agree with you. Remember most people just lurk on this site, and never post.
I look at dealing with people as a process of leading them, being an actor, instead of a re-actor. If we continue in our actions with true conviction, despite what they do or say, it strengthens their respect of our character and ideas, and hopefully, may lead to change. Dr. Martin Luther King understood this. Change happened, but not without sacrifice. We should hope to be as successful as he was in leading for change. If we are to be saved, this has to be a movement like none other, and we have to be clear: warning of the event will do little. A groundswell movement, from all aspects of the world, is what's needed. Everyone must be made aware, and embark upon solutions. Otherwise, the only thing we may be able to do is say: "I told you so!" Is that what we truly want? No, we want a better world. We must think about what it will take to make it so. Is it possible? Undoutedly. Probable? Unfortunately, no. But we must fight the odds, race against time, and rage, rage at the dying of the light.
Dr.'s Campbell, Deffeyes, Simmons, Bahktiari, Aleklett, Laherrere, and yes, Savinor, and the so many others working so hard to propel public awareness is truly a blessing. We only get one shot at this, and we better not blow it.
My two cents.
