I've got all sorts of options:

-Whores and Blow

-Locking gas cap for the truck

-put it towards a moped

-gun

-solar PV

-expand/enhance the solar hot water system

-woodstove

-whole grains (got the mill last month)

-rebuild the greenhouse

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'S')o we are borrowing more from our kids and it looks like the check is in the mail.

Was going to write something dismissive about not having children myself and meanwhile the rest of the world is happily breeding like rabbits anyway so what's the point?

But it occurred to me that the choice of the word "Stimulus" is probably the Neos letting us know this whole thing is, if you hadn't guessed already, a joke which we're invited to be in on if we choose, like naming their big ME oil grab Operation Iraq Liberation.

Not that I'm getting any. :x I feel like going over to 1600 Pennsylvania and chewing Cheney out, Springer/COPS style. "YOU SUMBITCH! MAH ECONOMY'S TANKIN' AND WE'RE RUNNING OUT A GAZOLINE YOU BASTARD AND YOU THINK THIS LOUSY 600 BUCKS FIXES EVERYTHING?" [throws chair]

10 tons of compost! You got a dump truck or what!

Have no idea what i'll get. Probably a few bones or something. May as well just stop by the house and bend me over, cause this whole thing is the biggest sign yet that we are doomed. Starting to feel more and more like Nazi Germany...not like i was there, but things are changing.

Hey, is that true, Domus? Are you guys rich or something?

If so, how come you aren't 100% prepared already? Man, I know I would be (I should say "we" meaning self and husband - in preparation for two younger generations moving to the farm with us) if we were rich!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('LastViking', 'T')he shortest recession in history...

You went to a Yukon petroleum fancier for proof?

626 news articles on recession. Found nothing relevant when adding the keyword "over," Freddy is free to explain his methods of course. His graph makes the late '07 downturn look like one of the sharpest slides, too.

Economists say USA is in recession

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he U.S. economy is in recession, or soon to be in one, according to USA TODAY's quarterly survey of leading economists.

Two-thirds of the 52 economists polled said the U.S. economy is in recession. Add those who believe the economy will be in recession soon, and 79% believe that the economy will contract at some point in 2008.

The good news: The recession will be short and shallow, and inflation will abate, say the 52 economists surveyed. In general, they expect the nation's gross domestic product to shrink by half a percentage point in the second three months of the year.

The survey comes in a key week for economic data. The Commerce Department reports Wednesday its initial measure of gross domestic product for the first quarter. On the same day, the Federal Reserve will set a target for its key fed funds rate, which broadly affects borrowing costs. In the survey, 87% predict the Fed will cut the short-term rate by a quarter-percentage point, to 2%.

Most economists surveyed think the recession will be short and shallow. Unemployment, one of the hallmarks of a recession, will probably rise to about 6%, says David Berson, chief economist for the PMI Group. "That's pretty low for a recession," he says

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')conomists say there's still plenty to worry about. Allen Sinai, chief global economist for Decision Economics, gives the Federal Reserve top marks for its actions but says many things are outside the Fed's control — such as the prices of food and oil.

"We think inflation will stay sticky high," Sinai says. "It's driven by forces outside the U.S." One big force: the huge demand for food and energy by India and China.

The other big worry: real estate. "Given the drop in home prices, there's a big risk that foreclosures will go up more than expected," Berson says.

Buffett says recession may be worse than feared - Yahoo! News

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warren Buffett, the world's richest person, said on Monday the U.S. economy is in a recession that will be more severe than most people expect.

Buffett made his comments on CNBC television after his Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) (BRKb.N) agreed to invest $6.5 billion in the takeover of chewing gum maker Wm Wrigley Jr Co (WWY.N) by Mars Inc in a $23 billion transaction.

"This is not a field of specialty for me, but my general feeling is that the recession will be longer and deeper than most people think," Buffett said. "This will not be short and shallow.

"I think consumers are feeling gas and food prices," he added, "and not feeling they've got a lot of money for other things."

We're putting some more down on the solar/electric car we're building with Art Haines. It's a neighborhood electric vehicle and I drove it on Sunday. It really moves! (we'll have to gear it down a bit) We're getting the pickup body. See the photos at the bottom of the page:

This new version is light years ahead of the prototype.

We're going to use it to get around town and maybe even up to the woodlot once in a while.

Since I'm married with two kids, and don't make enough to be disqualified, I'll be getting a decent amount of FRN's as an advance on next year's refund.

With those FRN's, I plan on adding 12" of cellulose insulation to my attic, installing new gutters and barrels for a rainwater collection system, and purchasing a used PTO roto-tiller for my small diesel tractor. There should be enough left over to put some away 'for a rainy day' as well.

I don't need the tiller right now, but I can see where it may become useful if things start changing faster. I could increase the size of my garden quickly to scale up in the event of real food shortages or relatives showing up on my doorstep unprepared. I may even be able to generate some positive cash flow by expanding my planting. One day that may be a lot more important to me that it is now. And I don't see the price of manufactured goods from overseas going down (electronics excepted) any time soon due to rising energy and material costs, in addition to the rapidly devaluing FRN.

No consumer crap for me. Just useful stuff that I think will only increase in value as more people realize just where we're heading.

NOTE: I noticed at my local Lowe's, that they have just enough cellulose insulation in stock to do 3-4 houses Might as well beat the rush right?

"A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences." - Proverbs 22:3

Edited to revise quantities of insulation in stock at lowe's.

Real GDP has been revealed today as 0.6% for Q4 and same for Q1. This confirms the "above 0" status as shown by his coincident indicator chart as posted last month and updated Monday.

But I feel your pain, Dude. The Q4/Q1 and its five monthly production records have shamed McPeaksters for yet another year. The twentieth in-a-row if anyone is counting!

Now they are joined by the McDoomers who have bombarded this site with hundreds of wasted posts boasting that the USA is in economic Recession. Really SUCKS if you belong to both camps.
