It should be noted that in many apartments, and houses, a gun can be so powerful that if it misses it can go through up to 3 walls and kill innocent people while the shooter is practicing 'self defense'. A good reason to restrict these stand your ground laws is that they encourage shooting in general,which endangers all of us. What if Zimmerman missed and shot a girl instead? Many drug dealers are killing innocent people in their shoot outs. I have a neighbor down the street who has a crossbow and a machine gun in his garage- my kids are outside playing a lot- I am less worried about an outside intruder than somebody going nuts in self defense.

listen- there is no perfect solution, but there are better ones and worse ones- if Zimmerman didn't have a gun he might have got seriously hurt or killed- but there is a 99% chance he would have simply gotten his face bloodied- and recovered (and maybe been wiser than acting like a dick). This is not perfect- but all this shooting is putting us all in more danger. How would you feel if you were paralyzed from the neck down by someone who accidentally shot you in self defense while aiming for someone else?

There is no perfect law- get over it! I would rather have some robbers get away than get plugged in a shoot out. Stand your ground has to go- it puts us all in danger so someone doesn't get their TV stolen.

I will agree that the chance of GZ being beaten to death by an unarmed 160 lb teen was essentially zero especially since lights were going on and 911 had been called. As countless videos show, It's quite difficult to kill an adult male on the spot even with a club or rock or a grizzly bear, even if there are multiple attackers beating the victim for a long period of time. It's nothing like The Walking Dead where one hit from an aluminum baseball bat is fatal. I noticed a recent case where some nut attacked his meter reader with a Cold Steel spiked mace and beat the guys head until the cops arrived. Although there was a lot of blood, the victim was treated at the ER and released.

A lot, and probably most, places in the us (by sq mile), it is legal to openly carry a long arm. It'd be entirely legal for me, for instance, to sling an AR across my back, ride my bike 30 miles North, hunt small game on an appropriate, available property with it, and return similarly. And the truth is, that the likelihood of a police officer saying anything about it, is very, very low. Maybe if it had a mag in and chamber closed, I'd get some safety commentary.... maybe. It is also true that if I were to hunt in this manner, I'd probably break the rifle down anyway so I could carry it protected in my paniers as opposed to exposed to gunk and dust etc; so perhaps not the perfect example.

OTOH, its pretty clear the guy is intending to provoke a police response, thus the filming, and flag waving, and the aggressive language toward the cop. Cop did good, idiot protestor made it aggravating for everyone involved... Its funny, cause I'm generally pretty biased against cops, and wouldn't believe one concerning anything unless I had hard, physical evidence to verify even the tiniest assertion... But compliments where due, the cop did good.
