Gentoo as well :) Hello to the other gentoo users!

>> For those of you who picked gentoo-- How much do your prefer that flavor and or is it the only flava you have ever known

Edit:
I've used gentoo, suse, redhat (but not fedora), some bsds and things like that. Got to say I prefer gentoo, but I'm not intollerant of other OSes :p

Mandrake on the home PC. Ubuntu on my laptop. Debian on my lab server. I used to run around with a Featherlinux CD and a USB stick containing all of my work so that I could be uber-portable. Also used Redhat for a while.

Linux rocks...I'd never willingly go back to Win-"dohs!". The only thing I miss is Flight Simulator.

Since you guys started this thread...

I'm having interoperability issues between OOffice & MS Office.

Any wisdom there?

All my clients are Windows... so I kinda have to be as well.

But server side is all Fedora... 3 hosted so far.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

running debian-unstable here,
these results are a little interesting - in the "real world", mac/linux don't really have more than 10% of home domination...

ms office / oo can be a nightmare... even MS office -> ms office different versions can be trouble...

Microsoft has NEVER laid off an employee until...

Unread postby hoplite » Sat 10 Dec 2005, 17:10:11

My buddy works for MS in Redmond- he says they just got memos indicating that MS is considering "restructuring"... He says many people are being offered CSR positions (Customer Service reps.) for lower wages- if they refuse, that means termination (but your not, technically being laid off because you refused to work- how clever!).

Makes sense from a bean counter POV. Use the SW developers who wrote the code to explain how to use it, while hiring people in India and elsewhere to write the next version of the code at 1/4 the price.

Not sure I would want to talk with a disgruntled (and now lower payed) CSR/former developer about how to use a feature or help with a work-around to some sw bug... but, I'm sure the uncooperative ones will quickly be weeded out. Remember, all those calls are recorded for 'quality assurance' purposes.

Such restructuring is common for Microsoft. A few years ago they "Restructured" the sale quotas up by a factor of 3 (a totaly unrealistic goal).

"If you don't like the new quotas you can always quit"
but Microsoft has never laid-off an employee, so its all good
Angry yet?

not true. My Uncle Jim used to work for MS. He was a high mucky-muck and went over to Gates house for dinner a few times. He (and a few others) got laid off a couple years ago.

When your uncle went over to Bill's house for dinner was it a potluck or did Bill Gates actually paid for all the food?

I heard a rumor that Mr. Gates has a reputation for penny pinching.

Still win 98 here. Just bought a new processor, mainboard and memory, and didn't want to waste all that extra speed on win 2k, so I didn't bother to upgrade.

I actually hate windows and would prefer Linux or Mac OS, but I have to be able to start up a terminal session from here. My company works with 2003 but the added custom security stuff refuses to accept anything but windows based systems, so I'm forced to use widows.

However one of my computers is in need of replacement, so I'm thinking of a G5 Quad.

Double boot gives you the best of both worlds. Windows XP and Knoppix is my choice.
