Hi EdF - Replying with Firefox!!

Unread postby Dvanharn » Wed 22 Jun 2005, 18:13:12

I avoid Internet Explorer except when absolutely necessary. I strongly support freeware AND shareware, and have willingly paid for many shareware products.

This web site is so big, and growing so fast, that it's hard to keep up with individuals and their real philosophies, and you cannot always tell whether someone is being serious or sarcastic. I need to find a "tongue-in-cheek" emoticon before I'm branded as a pro-capitalist warmonger!!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')That’s how America works, and it’s a wonderful, functioning system that everyone in the world should adopt.

Dave

The worst thing is that I momentarily thought you were sincere. Too many people believe this kind of crap.

Pure capitalism is not a permanent equilibrium. Only in the beginning you have competition. And as companies start engaging each other prices will drop.

But at the moment one of these companies gains a sufficiently big advantage over the others nothing will stop it. It will buy out its competitors or drive them to bankruptcy. The bigger the company gets and the larger the market share the better such a company is equipped to deal with competitors. So in the end you have a complete monopoly, and those lead to anything but lower prices and better service.

Capitalism is nothing without anti-monopoly laws. And since monopoly laws are considered un-capitalistic, pure capitalism is a failure by definition.

I think the development of Freeware is healthy. Microsoft has already grown to a monopoly. There is no way that you can compete with Microsoft commercially. Imagine that you would go to the bank to lobby for some start up capital saying: "Hey I've developed this great operating system and I want to market it". You'll probably have a bigger chance if you told them that you would be marketing a pepertuum mobile.

And they are right. Microsoft would blow you away with their advertising campaigns. And at the moment you would gain some ground they would either buy you out or destroy you by lowering their prices. Only freeware they cannot touch, and it is the only thing which brings some competitiveness to the market.

And I'm very content with my free and shareware programs. No-one has hijacked my Firefox yet. :)

I've used open office and it was great. but until they come up with a dummies installation program for linux or somewhere you can study up everything you need to know before you gas your system and get stuck I'll still be with Microsoft.

What the heck do you think the end plan was? Did you really think we would have 316 car companies in the US? There are hundreds of thousands of small businesses. Each of these could eventualy be bought by Globo-Matrix Inc.

The goal is 1 corporation with no competition. Everyone in the entire world would work for Globo-Matrix Inc. Rebels (small business owners) would be killed and thrown into one of Globo-Matrix Inc.'s recycling centers. The president of Globo-Matrix Inc. would be the world dictator with 100% control over everything. The Board of Directors would be his cadre. You would be born in a Globo-Matrix Inc. hospital, educated in a Globo-Matrix Inc. school, married in a Globo-Matrix Inc. church, live in a Globo-Matrix Inc. house, and be recycled at one of the many Globo-Matrix Inc. centers.

It would be...in a word...perfect. It would be Borg perfect. 8O

Check out Libranet. It's a very civilized version of GNU/Linux.

The only payware on my Windows partition is the OS its self. The rest of the software that I have is completly free, and about half of it is Free. On my linux partition everything is free, even though I am running SuSE 9.1 Pro. (I love SuSE's policy of giving you old copies for free). As soon as I get all 7.1 channels working in SuSE, and my TV card works properly, I will go over to it full time.

My actual operating system is win2k srv..since at least 3 years, without any re-install :-D ! I even used Vmware for a while to be able to simulate more than 3 or 4 virtual machines with different Operating system at the same time (God,how many Ram i have buyed to be able to do it !??)..

I was a big fan of linux at first..then,i have discovered the *BSD familly..even if i was not really good with any,the BSD's got my favor hand down !

Meanwhile all theses,i did drool over the MacOS X.x system and many of the mac..too bad i didn't ever had the money to buy a Powerbook 12" :( !

I was a technicien years ago..and like many pro linux or BSD,i was again Micro$oft and all..Now,i have calm down a lot..since i have discovered peak oil more than 2 years ago,i have lost any interest over computer technology and software...found it to have become meaningless  ...

But sometimes...i watch over some Apple products and still drool for a short time..crap..now,the few money left i have is used to buy peak oil related stuff (mainly books, dito the "Your Personal Library" thread in the "Preparing for the Future" section) or to pay my student dept 8O !

Well, it's better than Lindows or whatever.

I'm planning to switch to either Debian or SuSe 9.1

Very much and no! Jackass! with ck-sources resulted in a surprisingly quick desktop for my mom on a 450mhz P3. On my P4 Gimp loads in 3s when first opening, and 2s after. OOffice takes ~4.5s for the first and 2.5s after. The only apps that I feel load a bit slowly are firefox (~2.5s) and perlpanel (?), and that shouldn't be a problem once I get around to mounting stuff in ram on boot. There are tons of great howto's/faqs (Stage4, freenx, transset, chroot jails,etc...), and the only way your system can get borked is you! Don't ask me about permissions btw!
