$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')That’s how America works, and it’s a wonderful, functioning system that everyone in the world should adopt.

The worst thing is that I momentarily thought you were sincere. Too many people believe this kind of crap.
Pure capitalism is not a permanent equilibrium. Only in the beginning you have competition. And as companies start engaging each other prices will drop.
But at the moment one of these companies gains a sufficiently big advantage over the others nothing will stop it. It will buy out its competitors or drive them to bankruptcy. The bigger the company gets and the larger the market share the better such a company is equipped to deal with competitors. So in the end you have a complete monopoly, and those lead to anything but lower prices and better service.
Capitalism is nothing without anti-monopoly laws. And since monopoly laws are considered un-capitalistic, pure capitalism is a failure by definition.
I think the development of Freeware is healthy. Microsoft has already grown to a monopoly. There is no way that you can compete with Microsoft commercially. Imagine that you would go to the bank to lobby for some start up capital saying: "Hey I've developed this great operating system and I want to market it". You'll probably have a bigger chance if you told them that you would be marketing a pepertuum mobile.
And they are right. Microsoft would blow you away with their advertising campaigns. And at the moment you would gain some ground they would either buy you out or destroy you by lowering their prices. Only freeware they cannot touch, and it is the only thing which brings some competitiveness to the market.
And I'm very content with my free and shareware programs. No-one has hijacked my Firefox yet.
