The death count has gone up and up. Since nobody knows how many people there were in Port Au Prince the number of dead seems to have gone from 50,000 to 200,000 and now to 1/3 of Port Au Princes' 3 million residents.

I'll bet we all get worked up for about 3 more months and then we leave the Haitians in their now pulverized country.

You suggest we all should take a haitian or two under the wing and bring them to US/Europe?
Senegal offered them refuge already. They all should go, every last one of them. A move that was due well over 200 years ago.

dude do you even know what a genocide is? Look it up in a dictionary before you spill another ocean of your self-blinded ignorance.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mcgowanjm', 'A')nd you, Pretorian, have the exact personality of a Slave Owner. And
according to your math, a SLAVE will never be able to buy his way out

The Slave was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, huh, Pretorian?

According to my math, a slave is a much more trouble and expences than a free man. Why buy, if you can rent? No original investment, no need to feed /house/cure/secure them in slow seasons, and most importantly free people tear&wear at their own dime, so no amortization costs.
Unless of course you talk about child slaves that are so popular in Haiti now. They have a bit different math.

I wonder if the soldiers (UN and otherwise) will have the food-for-sex program like the Russians and Americans had in post-WWII occupation Germany?

I mean if a German woman would give you the girlfriend treatment for a candy bar, I wonder how far a box of donuts would go in Haiti?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')aitians jammed the fence of the presidential palace grounds to gawk and cheer as U.S. troops emerged.

"We are happy that they are coming, because we have so many problems," said Fede Felissaint, a hairdresser.

Given the circumstances, he did not even mind the troops taking up positions at the presidential palace. "If they want, they can stay longer than in 1915," he said, a reference to the start of a 19-year U.S. military presence in Haiti — something U.S. officials have repeatedly insisted they have no intention of repeating.

Just four blocks from U.S. troop landing at the palace, hundreds of looters were rampaging through downtown.

"That is how it is. There is nothing we can do," said Haitian police officer Arina Bence, who was trying to keep civilians out of the looting zone for their own safety.

People in one hillside Port-au-Prince district blocked off access to their street with cars and asked local young men to patrol for looters.

"We never count on the government here," said Tatony Vieux. "Never."

Violence added to complications in places. Medical relief workers said they were treating gunshot wounds in addition to broken bones and other quake-related injuries. Nighttime was especially perilous and locals were forming night brigades and machete-armed mobs to fight bandits across the capital.

"It gets too dangerous," said Remi Rollin, an armed private security guard hired by a shopkeeper to ward off looters. "After sunset, police shoot on sight."

In the sprawling Cite Soleil slum, gangsters are reassuming control after escaping from the city's notorious main penitentiary and police urge citizens to take justice into their own hands.

"If you don't kill the criminals, they will all come back," a Haitian police officer shouted over a loudspeaker.

Yep it sounds like we should leave...

I think that Port Au Prince is a preview. Look at what happened in New Orleans. Despite the fact that people were trying to get aid into the city the place totally fell apart, and the only thing that fixed the situation was to get everybody out of the place and resettled somewhere else.

In Haiti things are so bad that a lot of people are headed to the countryside. There is nothing in the countryside, but they would rather take their chances there than in the city.

Here's a vid of Haiti in happier times:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRUgtP53-8M&NR=1

International aid groups are doing all they can do, but people prefer a diaspora to living in the ruined city.

I think we need to take note of this.

Despite the aid convoys almost nothing works in Port Au Prince now. No stores, no water system, no shelter. It went from a functioning city of 3 million to a place where looters are rampant (until it's all gone) in about a week. I'll bet it never recovers to a city of 3 million again.

New Orleans has much less population complared with what it had before Hurricane Katrina.

This is a pattern for how places go down. We should keep this in mind for how it happens.

First the disaster, then people try to save the place and then people leave anyway.

Imagine if there was no light nor heat for a couple of weeks in a northern city of 3 million. How long would you hang out?

Again!
Strong Earthquake Shakes Haiti Again
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') strong earthquake has once again struck Haiti, shaking buildings and causing panic, eight days after a 7.0 magnitude quake left much of the nation in ruins.

The U.S. Geological survey said latest quake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was centered 59 kilometers from the devastated capital Port-au-Prince. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from Wednesday's quake, which comes as an international aid effort is underway to help those affected by last week's powerful earthquake.

It's ripping right along the slip strike Gonaives Fault.

That said, generally a temblor less than the original
is considered an aftershock. One of equal or greater
force is "another one."

Expect another one. The Arc is being described.

Well here we go, our first Haiti troop surge, from 3,000 to 10,000 now:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Around 10,000 US soldiers are due to arrive in Haiti to restore order to the streets as desperate earthquake survivors resort to looting and violence while aid struggles to reach them.

Chaos and fear reigned on the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince on Sunday, as many were still waiting for food, water and medicine five days after the disaster decimated the area.

One, a man in his 30s, was killed outright by bullets to the head as the crowd grabbed produce in the Marche Hyppolite.
Another quickly snatched the rucksack off the dead man's back
as clashes continued and police reinforcements descended on the area armed with pump-action shotguns and assault rifles.

Residents in the Delmas area caught two suspected looters, tied them together, beat them and dragged them through the streets. Both were eventually dumped, motionless.

Doesn't get much worse than that.. gunned down by assault rifles while stealing a watermelon, then as you fall dead someone runs up and steals the melon you stole. People must be starving now, if they're braving firing squads just to steal a bit of fruit.

I lived in one of the most dangerous countries on the planet without a firearm for over 2 years.

It's a nice tool to have, but it may not really help as much as you think when things get nasty. You can't really use it and if anyone sees you with a gun they might shoot you.

The military and the cops confiscated firearms in New Orleans.

This looting situation is getting nasty. What are they going to do about it? It sounds like something to stay far away from.
