The death count has gone up and up. Since nobody knows how many people there were in Port Au Prince the number of dead seems to have gone from 50,000 to 200,000 and now to 1/3 of Port Au Princes' 3 million residents.

I think that Port Au Prince is a preview. Look at what happened in New Orleans. Despite the fact that people were trying to get aid into the city the place totally fell apart, and the only thing that fixed the situation was to get everybody out of the place and resettled somewhere else.

In Haiti things are so bad that a lot of people are headed to the countryside. There is nothing in the countryside, but they would rather take their chances there than in the city.

International aid groups are doing all they can do, but people prefer a diaspora to living in the ruined city.

I think we need to take note of this.

Despite the aid convoys almost nothing works in Port Au Prince now. No stores, no water system, no shelter. It went from a functioning city of 3 million to a place where looters are rampant (until it's all gone) in about a week. I'll bet it never recovers to a city of 3 million again.

New Orleans has much less population complared with what it had before Hurricane Katrina.

This is a pattern for how places go down. We should keep this in mind for how it happens.

First the disaster, then people try to save the place and then people leave anyway.

Imagine if there was no light nor heat for a couple of weeks in a northern city of 3 million. How long would you hang out?

Strong Earthquake Shakes Haiti Again

It's a nice tool to have, but it may not really help as much as you think when things get nasty. You can't really use it and if anyone sees you with a gun they might shoot you.

The military and the cops confiscated firearms in New Orleans.

This looting situation is getting nasty. What are they going to do about it? It sounds like something to stay far away from.
