$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gnm', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cynicalheretic', 'O')MG, that landover baptist site/religion/nutjob_factory is freaking retarded. I so hate baptists, a bunch of holy rolling morons. They are probably part of that group that goes and bashes soldiers while they are being buried, or stands on street corners and holds dead baby fetuses up for 1st graders as they are going by on the bus to school. Makes me sick, that people like that are even allowed to breathe

Ummmmmm, you _DO_ know that whole site is a parody? right?

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

M.I.T. brings $150 Laptops to Ebay!

Unread postby TommyJefferson » Wed 14 Feb 2007, 16:20:46

Cool beans! These things even have a hand-crank option so you can recharge the battery without grid power. Photo and Specs here: http://www.laptop.org/laptop/hardware/specs.shtml
I'm going to get two of them. I will wipe the hard drive and install PuppyLinux on one, and DamnSmall Linux on the other.

If you can install linux, that would be great. I am just not seeing how this will be very easy to accomplish as everything is built in.

Is there anyway to use a cd or to load external data to the machine?

I need something like this, but I want at least 700 Mhz 256 MB ram and something capable of storing at least 1 GB of data. Also it at the very least needs the capability to have a couple of USB 2.0 slots. They deliver that and I am signing up.

Guys...these are designed for children in the 6-12 age range. They are teaching aids, and toys designed for kids.
The idea was to have a cool teaching aid, and gateway to the world wide web for the poorest of the world's children. I hope you don't plan on "buying" one, because you'll just be taking one from the hands of some kid in Uganda, or Bangladesh.

Guy who really wants a cheap laptop meets a kid who really wants $150.

Sounds like a perfect match to me.

Lol. What the hell would you use it for? It'll be the technological equivalent of "See Dick run!"

Ugh. You know, I bet AMD, and Quanta thought to themselves..."Hey, we get to do a good deed, and at the same time create consumers for our products when they grow up! How convenient!"

Do you think I'm a cynical old bastard?

I could carry it when motorcycle camping to check my email.

I've been playing with DamnSmall Linux and PuppyLinux.

They do everything I need to do, email, websurf, word-processing.

Then run quite snappily on "undesireable" hardware like the XO.

Just because a product isn't the latest, greatest whiz-bang thing in TV commercials doesn't mean it's not perfectly adequate and fun.

I guess I can't begrudge you for wanting something like this, but do you really wish to bring a computer with you when you go camping?

Oh Hawkman, what has this world come to?

Myself, I think there are better ways of improving the educational opportunities of third world children than giving them a laptop. $100 bucks might seem like chump change to us, but to a kid in Zimbabwe, it's the equivalent to a years supply of rice, or medical care.

I think the UN has their priorities a little skewed. They should be focusing their efforts on preventing violence, improving access to clean water, and stopping the spread of malaria. Not that they aren't, but this kind of thing won't help those poor children if they are sick, malnourished, or afraid for their lives.

I think the best teachers are...well, teachers. Not laptops.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gampy', 'd')o you really wish to bring a computer with you when you go camping?

Perhaps 'camping' is an inaccurate descriptor. Really its more like "living on the road, sleeping in the woods behind truck stops, freeloading off strangers when possible".

I try to sell travelogues to moto-rags by going to weird places and meeting weird people and writing about them.

These XO laptops have no mechanical drive to fail, they have wifi, they hand crank, they have near-mil-spec dust, vibration, & moisture resistance. They are cheap. It would be perfect.

Traveling by motorcycle means lots of vibration, dirt, rain, heat, and cold. Plus, I wouldn't cry if it got stolen.

I can see how these things might be useful for you, then.

Although a notepad and pencil are a lot more robust, lol.

{ crusty old man voice }

You dorks and geeks today have it easy. I looked at the specs for that computer and I all I could do was shake my head. I would have killed for a computer with a fraction of those specs when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. I remember when a friend got an Apple ][+ computer for xmas and it was the shit - 48 KB RAM, 8-bit 1 MHz processor (6502), super high-res graphics (280x192, 6 colors). Yup, I remember geeking out playing snack attack and wavy navy.

Those computers were so slow you had to code things in assembly language to get any kind of speed out of them, like displaying wireframe graphics.

The boot ROM on that laptop has far more memory the most PC's had 'back in the day

Amazing for 150 bones. Too bad about no HD, but considering the price can't complain.
