make sure you have a fixed, low interest rate though, if you would choose such a course of action.

What if there is a wave of deflation first? Seems very possible.

We've been seeing these threads for at least the last 2 years that I've been here. Although I agree with the outcome I have no confidence in the timing. You could go into debt now just to lose everything if the crash doesn't come fast enough.

Remember the world is working hard to prevent the crash and that very well may drag it out for years more yet.

Wild beest, If I had to guess I'm thinking we're more likely headed for inflation, everything I've read says foriegn governments are not only slowing their dollar purchases but even starting to accelerate the rate at which they're unloading their dollar reserves, they know the decreasing strength of the dollar is not a part of a regular cyclical fluctuation this time. This is a weak dollar reflecting a systemic eroding of the basic financial health of this countries economy.ferrel you're right that if people spent like crazy that would trigger hyper-inflation lickety split,I'm thinking that won't be the trigger this time since people are spending less recently simply because the home equity ATM has been tapped out,the source of inflation dollars this time will be foriegn governments looking to buy hard assets with the dollars they can't ,or don't want to unload on the currency markets,a nice snapshot of this phenomenon was the increased price of concrete over the past couple years from china buying all they could get their hands on.Rocc,if I had extra money I would definately be stockpiling base foods with long shelf-lives , not necessarily to eat but as a possible alternative to paper money should the dollar collapse, gold and silver might not be a bad idea either,(have you noticed the steady uptick in the price of gold over the past 10-15 years or so?,more and more people are sensing somethings afoot), I'm not sure I'd go into debt to stock up on dried beans, what if we're wrong and the financial "experts" on fox news are right and this is actually the most rip-roaring stupendous economy THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN!

Debt is like any other investment and varies in value depending on what you use it for and what happens in the rest of the economy. Some investments in fixed-rate debt (for assets that hold or increase in value) is good. My philosophy is to diversify in uncertainty. Some debt, some equities, some interest-bearing, some commodities etc.

Right now the economy is being held together by elmers glue.

It would be ignorant to go into debt right now.

Check back into this idea exactly one year from now. We will see where we are then.

Without a world war, nothing is going to happen in the next 12 months that would cause me to advise such drastic measures.

Patience, it is going to crash. Just give it time.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')o into debt NOW!

I would rather pay it off, unless you want to take your money into suitcase and leave US.
BTW, it can be illegal...

I don't think going into debt is wise. What if TPTB manage to keep things going well enough that they track down debtors and you find yourself in a forced work brigade at the Halliburton camps?

Having said that, I am stocking up myself on supplies for the exact reasons mentioned in the OP.

If you are gay you will be hauled off...

If you have a 9-11 "was an inside job" bumper sticker on your car you will be hauled off...

If you are white, black, yellow...you will be hauled off...

If you are in debt...off you go...

If you are out of debt...off you go...

If you blog on PO.com...you're gone...

Having said that - TPTB will not have the man-power to roll out martial law.

Well then they'll hit us with the bioweapons, which will wipe out most of us, and then follow that up by unleashing the terminator robots to conduct cleanup operations so any of us who survived don't make it to their underground cities.

That's assumming they don't just drop nukes.

I still think it's unwise to go into debt.
