Many great albums mentioned, it's hard to pick a favorite.

I'll third "Dark Side of the Moon". "The Wall" ranks pretty high too.

But here's another contender...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Fredrik', 'A')s a diehard fan of instrumental music, the most beautiful album I've ever heard is Brian Eno & Harold Budd: Ambient 2 / The Plateaux of Mirror. (What's generally called "ambient" isn't worth a mention on the same day as Eno.)

Eno produced some of David Bowie's albums, and I think Bowie called him the greatest composer of his era in some interview, if I recall correctly.

My favorite "song" LP of Eno's would be this one:

Image

Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy. Eno also produced a lot of U2's stuff.

"We are the 801
We are the central shaft."

White Album? I'm more a fan of this Black Album:

Image

Eno made an CD with one of the guys in the VU, also.

Some more modern psychedelica - if you'd consider 1984 modern, anyway:

Cogito, ergo non satis bibivi
And let me tell you something: I dig your work.

The more I think about it the more albums I want to nominate.
I guess I am having a hard time picking just one as different albums suite different moods etc.
Two more that I can't seem to get tired of is Leonard Cohen's; I'm your man. (Except possibly for that jazz police song)
and Pink FLoyd's Final Cut.
Both of them have such strong texts and and some where emotional songs.
Both are albums you need to really sit quitely and listen to and immerse yourself in.

There is way too much classic rock in this thread. Must be because of there's so many old men on this website.

In order to be the "best album ever" it needs to age for a while and see if it stands the test of time. Here is something a little more contemporary:

There's a very good reason why, forty years later, those old geezers are still selling out worldwide tours and playing the Super Bowl at halftime.

Nothing compares to their body of work, and BB is their best.

The following are my top 3 favorite albums of all time. This is the music I would take with me to a deserted island and I would insist on listening to these before I was executed on death row.

1. JETHRO TULL -- A PASSION PLAY (1973)

Image

The concept album of all concept albums, it's a story of heaven and hell. Pretentious? Yes, but it's damn good. Ian Anderson is probably the greatest lyricist in the history of rock music. Witness his wordplay with the English language:

"Well, I'm all for leaving and that being done,
I've put in a request to take up my turn
in that forsaken paradise that calls itself "Hell"
where no-one has nothing and nothing is well meaning fool,
pick up thy bed and rise up from your gloom smiling.
Give me your hate and do as the loving heathen do."

2. TOM WAITS -- FRANK'S WILD YEARS (1987)

Image

Waits is probably the closest thing to an American musical genius that the US has ever produced. This album is a story of crashing and burning and coming back to Earth. It helped me get through life's hard moments, especially during the terrible "buyer's remorse" I felt in the first few weeks of boot camp.

"Crest fallen sidekick in an old cafe
Never slept with a dream before he had to go away
Theres a bell in the tower, Uncle ray bought a round
Dont worry about the army in the cold cold ground"

3. THE MOODY BLUES -- DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED (1967)

Image

I only recently discovered this album -- since this band predates my actual birth by several years. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best collection of "elevator music" songs ever assembled. While that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it's not. I like that this album sounds great as a whole, in spite of the fact that it's anachronistic, corny and trapped in the time it was recorded.

"Balloons flying
Children sighing
What a day to go kite flying
Breeze is cool
Away from school
Cowboys fighting out a duel
Time seems to stand quite still
In a child's world, it always will"

Maybe you should search for "In search of the Lost Chord". By the Moody Blues.

I did listen to it, I did find some songs to be interesting (like "See-Saw" and "Timothy Leary's Dead...") but it's not my kind of music. I might buy it, though.

But DAYS is great.

The best album ever must posses:
Incredible lyrics
Mind-blowing melodies
Fist-pumping anthems that stand the test of time
Incredible musicianship by musicians at the peak of their powers.
With those conditions, there really can be only one:

This one's got one of the most intriguing literary songs ever on it. It's about a gambler named Frankie Lee who screws himself to death in a brothel. Loosely adapted from The House Of The Rising Sun.

Nice...I'm going to take this one for a spin tonight!

Here's my offering today:
Teenager of the Year by Mr. Frank Black...hell anything else this guy has touched has been great or damn near it. It amazes me how much music is inside a human and Frank...Charles...Black Francis...what ever you want to call him, is a great example of a music vault! On a personal note, one of my best pals was his bass man on his last tour of Europe this Spring and plays on the latest release (also great!) "Bluefinger"..... and has nothing but wonderful things to say about the man. He's also a resident of our city these days and loves his music as he is often spotted enjoying our super-duper music scene....he's a real guy garsh darn it! So......Frank Black's "Teenager of the Year" gets my vote today...an album that will remain timeless and is perfect for any occasion!
