Nice selective reading. Not many fry clerks working for the federal gov't.

Jessica Klement, government affairs director for the Federal Managers Association, says the federal workforce is highly paid because the government employs skilled people such as scientists, physicians and lawyers. She says federal employees make 26% less than private workers for comparable jobs.

As a side note on this subject....
Max Baucus gave girlfriend $14K raise link
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')en. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, gave a nearly $14,000 pay raise to a female staffer in 2008, at the time he was becoming romantically involved with her, and later that year took her on a taxpayer-funded trip to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, though foreign policy was not her specialty.
Curious. What do you folks in Montana think about this? Going to do anything about it??

Yes, the salary thing is bogus, at least for what I am familiar with - Engineering and Construction. Family member who was laid off is applying for government jobs and the salary is about 30% less. Job security and decent health care would be the only reason to work for the government vs private sector in these fields.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'm')any people argue that the federal government has an elite workforce with many highly educated people. Certainly, that’s an important factor to consider. However, that is the reason why I focused on the pay trend over the last eight years. The federal worker compensation advantage rose from 66 percent in 2000 to 100 percent in 2008. Has the composition of the federal workforce really changed that much in just eight years to justify such a big relative gain? I doubt it.

again this is because the gov is increasingly dropping blue collar workers for contractors and this trend will continue until the gov is rid of blue collar workers so it will be a few more years until this process is completly done. C'mon alex try harder.

More good news.... Federal jobs still growing amid layoffs
link$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')ompanies are cutting jobs by the tens of thousands. State and local governments are penny-pinching, too. So what about Uncle Sam? Tough times for him as well? Not exactly.
In fact the number of federal workers is on the rise. That might seem strange to the 11 million people in the U.S. who are out of work, and the millions more who fear they soon will be. Shouldn't Washington pare down too?

%26 ?

Usually they throw out a nice round number like %20 or %30. Well if Jessica says so it must be true, I guess that would be why all those federal employees are fleeing into the private sector these days!

Statistics make it easy to lie if you factor in the top of the pyramid, when those people come in through the revolving door they are taking a massive pay cut but in return they get to form policies for their friends who put them there in the first place. Of course after the job is done they can retire back to their 6 figure income for a job well done!

Most people in the federal government are dug in like ticks and they know it.

The pension is more for the old-timers in the CERS system. Newer fed employees are much closer to a traditional 401k system (with economies of scale, the TSP has a low cut for the fund management, so that is a positive). The health benefits for fed employees are pretty good, but sometimes vastly overstated as several people I've talked to that have had both positions have noted that private industry has better health plans.

The real far and away #1 advantage is job security, which doesn't look too bad about now.

I did not know USA Today was a right wing nut publication! Interesting...

America passes a milestone!
http://fabiusmaximus.wordpress.com/2009/01/20/milestone/

We now have more people employed in government than manufacturing and construction. With health care reform and Cap & Trade, its a sure bet that number will grow higher.

It's the classic battle of the Haves vs Have Nots. Those who have jobs (ie Govt. workers) vs. Those who do not (Everybody else)

Since taxes are paid by those who actually produce something ( Govt. is cost center) are rapidly disappearing, how long can this continue?

I guess we will find out...................

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('futresobright', 'u')h this is an incredibly ingnorant post. The reason the gov pay is higher than the avg person is because the gov is almost entirely white coller/professionals now. The gov doesn't do any of the anymore (janitors, food service, cleaning crews, etc etc) so of course the avg salary is going to be way higher. DUH.

Do you realize what you're saying?

That the FEEDing you and the getting rid of your WASTE

are 'shit jobs'.

And that the gov't doesn't do that anymore. So to summarize:

The most important jobs for our 'yeast culture' are the
ones most looked down upon.

Everything you need to know. Right there.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')But Bernanke has announced that the recession is over. So there you have it. A grateful nation breathes a sigh of relief. And besides, he is right about it being over. The recession is over for the most important members of a capitalist society, the oligarchs and banksters, who have made fortunes off this recession, thanks to our unique economic system, and may now return to their standard garden variety usury.

Economic systems are merely belief systems.

And only 5% of Americans believe in this system anymore.

To start, the US population is only going up. It's quite steady.
The Civilian Employment Population ratio is arguably the purest measure of unemployment there is. It's simply, the percentage of civilians that are working. And it's only going down.
We're at a level not seen since the 1980s, and the same level we were at in the 40s.
Meanwhile, the persons not in the labor force continues to grow and grow.

Question to all the cornies. How do you eat if you're not
employed?

Federal employment as a % of the population has been falling for 40+ years. The real increases in budgets and employment have been at the state and local levels, but they aren't as easy of a target as the big, bad feds.

That's because the federal government is currently intentionally trying to create jobs to make up for ones lost in the private sector. Part of the strategy when they say we need to 'spend' our way out of this recession. Now I don't know if I think it is the right direction or not, but there doesn't appear to be anything nefarious about it. I work in government and as mentioned, the salary is less, but benefits and job security are better. Pick your poison.

I made my decisions, others made different ones. Why, because of my fortunate decision am I a vliiain? It amazes me how little people appreciate those in government jobs, and how delusional many folks are as to what kind of salaries most people in government make in what are largely civil service positions.

Done beating up car unions, time for government workers.
