Michael Crichton is a writer that has made a fortune writing novels with the following method:

1) He chooses a subject, preferably scientific, but not always
2) He documents himself superficially about it
3) He plots a storyline around it, preferably mildly catastrophic (the world doesn't end, but a small part of it does)

The problem people have with him is mostly with 2 - he doesn't ever write about things he knows well, he just reads about it and blurts half-digested stuff mixed with downright mistakes.

He's most famous for having written Jurassic Park, a book full of inaccuracies about dinosaurs, genetics and chaos theory, and the concept behind the film.
