"...if it's legal." Has anything this gov't tried since Sep '08 been legal? And don't worry about the "wasted" Volvo's.

We take out maybe three quarter million engines. That leaves 124.25 million, 7 years or older, out there. (Source: Auto matic Earth)

this is where the repo/wrecker bizness comes in handy.

And zero down payment? And can I go to Wells Fargo for
an AELOC?

How many scams can you fit into one gov't program.

Meanwhile, in Orlando, clunkers are getting turned in left and right.
Orlando $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')nce reports began flying Thursday night that the program was running low on cash, "it was chaos around here," said Chad Rogers, general manager of Classic Mazda in Orlando and Holler Hyundai in Winter Park.

Rogers says his two stores have done about 35 "clunker" deals this week, with many more expected this weekend. "It has definitely stimulated sales," he said. "There's no argument about that."

Officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the initiative is designed to help the economy and the environment by spurring new-car sales. Car owners can receive federal subsidies of as much as $4,500 for trading in their old cars for new ones that achieve significantly higher gas mileage.

Sue Ferrara-Harney, a 43-year-old medical technician from Orlando, said she will miss her 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL, which was the company's flagship sedan and sold for about $80,000 when new. She will not, however, miss the average 14miles per gallon it got on the road.

She wasn't really planning on buying a new car, but the government deal "was too good to pass up," she said. So she traded in her Mercedes for a Nissan Cube, which averages 29 mpg.

Well, I guess her job as a medical technician is pretty secure...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ichard Peine, 68, of Groveland traded in a 1993 Ford Aerostar minivan with nearly 300,000 miles for a new Nissan Versa. "CARS worked for me," he said, adding that he likely wouldn't have bought a new car without the rebate. "It forced us into action."

Nissan had a promotional discount of $1,750, "and the dealer helped out with another $1,000, so we got a very nice $7,250 reduction from a $17,750 price, leaving a $10,500 balance," he said, plus tax, tag and dealer fee.

CARS offers customers a rebate of $3,500 or $4,500, depending on the fuel mileage of the vehicle bought and the vehicle traded in. The government had figured there would be far more $3,500 deals, but the opposite appears true, one reason the funds are being depleted faster than expected.

Of the first nine CARS deals Riding did, only one was for $3,500, he said. It also appears that consumers are trading in vehicles that you might not expect to see in a "clunker" lineup, such as Ferrara-Harney and her $80,000 Mercedes. Rogers has taken in a BMW 635 CSi, as well as a couple of Jeep CJs and a Chevrolet Blazer K5.

Under the rules, the dealer must permanently disable the engine and then send the vehicle to a salvage yard.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', 'I')ts insured but not licensed ( yeah I know, a strange combination) it runs ok but leaking oll heavily. The question is what do i do with a new truck ? I hadnt touch my old one since December or so. Can I sell the new one back to the dealer right away? Do I have to wait?

Well if it has not been licensed for the past 12 months the dealer can not take it under the cash for clunkers program, and what to do with a new truck, drive it, enjoy it, selling it back to the dealer will cost you at least $4000 or more once you buy it because now its used no matter how few miles you put on it..

I do IT consulting for many small to medium size businesses and I feel like I need to get the word out and warn those people not to access this website from their offices! I should probably block the website on the firewalls of all my customers so they don't go there!!!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Maddog78', 'J')eez, I didn't know that they had to destroy the trade ins engines.
How ridiculous!
That Volvo looked very nice, hardly a clunker.
Even that BMW ran for quite a while before it finally died. That's a good engine.
Couldn't they have been sold to wreckers for parts?

I just asked my (soon to be ex-) roommate about this. He works in the auto industry. He said that they are actually pouring liquid glass into the engine and then probably shipping the scrap to China to be recycled.

It all started with one of those forwarded emails...

and in todays new york times...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '')We knew we could pull it off — we had the tools,” said one senior official who worked at the Pentagon when the highly classified plan was developed.
But the attack never got the green light. Bush administration officials worried that the effects would not be limited to Iraq but would instead create worldwide financial havoc, spreading across the Middle East to Europe and perhaps to the United States.

Fears of such collateral damage are at the heart of the debate as the Obama administration and its Pentagon leadership struggle to develop rules and tactics for carrying out attacks in cyberspace.

While the Bush administration seriously studied computer-network attacks, the Obama administration is the first to elevate cybersecurity — both defending American computer networks and attacking those of adversaries — to the level of a White House director, whose appointment is expected in coming weeks.

So I watched the video from the email.. and captured three screens that give you chills when you realize what you have to agree to in their "terms of service.

Traffic citations are a not so well hiddens source of revenue for local governments. As this thing unwinds, it will become much cheaper to walk.

DMV is hitting truckers hard too. Increasing random weigh stops and vehicle inspections...........and the fines are hefty. Its not about public safety, its about tapping income for the department to keep the bureacrats working.

I know many small independent truckers who own their own rig are being put out of business.

People are getting angry......................

Yeah, I'm thinking it's time to sell the dang thing and just ride my bicycle. Heck, for $6 I can do a nice lunch ride. Besides, I'll save on insurance too! :)

I also believe traffic tickets are on the rise. My daughter - who has never had a ticket in her entire life - has received two in 30 days in a cash-strapped state in the south.

One was for running a red light. It was what I'd call a "high yellow," but nonetheless, she was ticketed for it. Secondly, she was stopped and fined for not wearing a seat belt. She begged the officer to let her go with a warning but he refused. Later, we saw him sitting at the intersection with binoculars, watching drivers go by.

The fine was $100.

I guess they've found a quick way to raise revenue for the cities.

I suppose on one hand you can see it as sort of a sin tax. To me the most destructive effect of traffic law BS is that it creates this atmosphere of constant government surveillance that people get accustomed to and is very destructive to the functioning of a free society. (If we can dare call ourselves that anymore.)

And taking practically new cars and killing them with sodium silicate while someone else is at the same dealership buying the same gas guzzling model is the most asinine thing I've ever seen in my life. I just can't believe people think this is reasonable.
