$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gampy', 'A')nyone seen this?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')AIPEI (Reuters Life!) – A man died just as he was about to win a university binge eating contest in Taiwan, scoffing down two buns filled with rice and cheese as well as some of his teammate's food, the college said on Friday.

The 23-year-old, described as tall and strong, vomited relentlessly, passed out and died on Thursday during the "Big Stomach King" contest at Dayeh University in central Taiwan. He had pulled ahead of 30 other teams.

"I can't say why he died," said Huang Te-hsiang, the university's dean of student affairs. "He had been in the contest before. He was a strong guy."

The graduate student, surnamed Chen, may have eaten too fast rather than too much, a campus publicist said. Chen was on course to win the five-year-old annual competition, she said. He would have won T$2,000 ($60).

Taiwan's education ministry has halted campus-based eating contests while an investigation is launched.

I wonder what mechanism killed him? Perhaps a pre-existing condition that was exacerbated by the binge eating?

Has anyone ever died from over-eating?

My guess is that he died from asphyxiation. The clue is that he "vomited relentlessly." To that extent, he likely inhaled his own vomit.

(yeah, I know, "what a fun topic" .......)

Study links fast food diets to mental decay and Alzheimer's

Unread postby Sixstrings » Fri 28 Nov 2008, 22:15:16

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ONDON (Reuters) - Mice fed junk food for nine months showed signs of developing the abnormal brain tangles strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease, a Swedish researcher said on Friday.

The findings, which come from a series of published papers by a researcher at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet, show how a diet rich in fat, sugar and cholesterol could increase the risk of the most common type of dementia.

"On examining the brains of these mice, we found a chemical change not unlike that found in the Alzheimer brain," Susanne Akterin, a researcher at the Karolinska Institutet's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, who led the study, said in a statement.

"We now suspect that a high intake of fat and cholesterol in combination with genetic factors ... can adversely affect several brain substances, which can be a contributory factor in the development of Alzheimer's."

"All in all, the results give some indication of how Alzheimer's can be prevented, but more research in this field needs to be done before proper advice can be passed on to the general public," she said.

How can a civilization live so utterly wrongly? From money matter, to pollution, to the worst kind of food.. it boggles the mind.

It's all about comfort, regardless of consequence. Over 150 channels in HD, variable valve timing, central heat and air conditioning, online banking, automatic car washes, full leather interior, etc. all make living wrong feel so right.

Fast food is cheap and easy to come by and requires no effort to prepare. There are people who make it their career to determine what tastes and textures to make it for maximum appeal.

Nutrient deficiencies account for an incredible amount of the disease that occurs in our society. Even through the amount of research that has been done to support that claim is staggering in magnitude, it is generally completely ignored by "modern medicine".

Fast food is the equivalent of a dietary sahara. It is hardly any wonder that the CDC says the diabetes will be the number one killer in the US by 2020. Many of the diseases that plague our society were extremely rare only a century ago.

However, there is no "profit" in a healthy society if your business is concocting caustic compounds to alleviate symptoms!

So many questions:

a. Do they get teeny tiny toys in their mouse happy meals? If so, what sort of toy is it?

b. More importantly, did they control for obesity? Did these little guys get fat like kids do when they eat this stuff? If not, what happens if you eat this stuff and work your butt off to keep some fairly normal body weight?

c. Is there a preparation issue? If you ingest the same number of calories, and more or less the same nutrient balance, prepared in a non-fast food way, does it have the same effect?

I remember as a kid, we actually had a 'salt shaker' sitting on the kitchen table. It was standard practice to grab it and shake salt on darn near everything we ate, and apparently this was true across the land.

No more. I haven't sprinkled salt on anything in decades and other than in cooking, salt is never used in this house.

But it takes time to break these unhealthy habits. For years, as a young man, I would routinely add salt to french fries and then add even more with ketchup knowing full well how bad it was. I knew it was bad news, but did it anyhow chowing down on Big Macs and all the rest falsely thinking it wasn't going to affect me. How wrong I was.

I notice McD's stock is doing fairly well during this economic crisis. Even though everyone is well aware of the harm fast food causes, people are nevertheless flocking into these places in droves.

How do we stop this behavior? I have no idea. The profit motive is powerful. The convenience motive is powerful. I suspect that as long as these forces continue and laws allow it, there will be no end to it until .... well, until a really big economic crash occurs.

A personal health problem seems to be the most motivational concerning diet, but most times it doesn't even appear then.... not if there is a pill that allows a person to continue to eat like they want and exist.

My Mom, at 80 plus and still independant has always said that we are suppose to eat to live - not live to eat.

We don't eat out at all. When you mention that in casual conversation - people are shocked and say they couldn't do it. Why?

We're creatures of habit and after you go through the changes to a natural diet - it's no different than any other habit.

But that 'Change' word comes with some big challenges and finding out what you're made of, heh?

IMHO, society changes by each person changing themselves and sharing knowledge. You never know who you help by sharing yourself.....

My take from the article was that it isn't the rat's weight that was the problem, it's that somehow high sugar and fats cause neuronal tangling which is the key sign of alzheimers development.

After they do more studies, you think we'll see a Surgeon General's Warning label on Bic Macs?

Insulin is a highly destructive hormone in excessive quantities. Our super high modern sugar diets produce super high production of insulin by the pancreas, which results in death of the cells that produce the hormone.

Moderate smoking may not be (probably is not) as harmful.

McDonald's is lovin it...consumers eating more cheap food

Unread postby billg » Fri 19 Dec 2008, 11:48:16

This morning I heard a McDonald's ad on the radio reminding people that in hard economic times, cheap monocultured food is the way to go. I'm not sure if the sheeple need any reminding that McDonald's and other fast food joints are the places to be for a cheap fix. Undoubtedly, low gas prices are also contributing to the surge in fast food sales.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]McDonald's global same-store sales rise 7.7 percent in November, US sales rise 4.5 percent by Lauren Shepherd, AP Business Writer Monday December 8, 2008, 6:46 pm EST:
NEW YORK (AP) -- Consumers hungry for cheap meals boosted worldwide sales at McDonald's Corp.'s established locations by 7.7 percent in November, more proof of how the fast-food leader is thriving in a downturn that has eaten into sales at its competitors.

Even recession-weary consumers in the U.S. were enticed by the Golden Arches during the month. U.S. same-store sales -- or sales at locations open at least a year -- rose 4.5 percent from the same month a year earlier, the company said Monday.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he past few months have been difficult ones for the restaurant industry as the now yearlong recession deepened. Restaurants have seen traffic decline traffic as consumers curb their spending, and have faced higher ingredient costs that have shrunk margins.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')lthough the November sales exceeded most analysts' expectations, the rise was slightly lower than the 8.2 percent increase in global same-store sales that the company in October.

Unlike the rest of you people, i don't eat at McDonalds every day. I've at MCDs ONCE in the last 5 years. It was last winter, i was out of town, and starving...and everyone wanted to go there... I was tempted to just starve it out but i want for 2 $1 double cheeseburgers.

It tasted like shit... Seriously... My taste buds must be more sensitive to shit food, but thats what they tasted like. Thank god i had a glass of water. The only thing that killed the taste was the onions and the half pound of ketchup (corn syrup! yummy)...

F*uck U Ronald....

In Las Vegas one company enjoying the collapse is in-n-out burger.

Hamburger Pithicus is still alive and well living primarily to chase after their flesh-eating cravings, which can be momentarily satisfied for a few easy to panhandle bucks.

Franky: You're just too accustomed to tasty Whizconsin venison. Mmmm.

The food banks up here were begging hunters for more venison. Donations are down 42% this year, even though licensures are down some 20%.

McDonalds cracks me up. Some clown feeding you Mcfood. You can't make that stuff up! It is cheap though. Suspiciously so... It's hard for me to even watch people eat it. Making a burger at home isn't all that hard. Just put on a clown suit and make one for your kids. :P
