I place all my chips on L.A. for the win. I'll double down and say South Central (south of the 10, east of the 405, west of the 60). I was in LA for the 92' riots. Good times, good times. We left and went to Vegas. Driving on the 10 at noon in May, and you couldn't see more than 50 ft. ahead due to the 800+ fires burning in SC LA.
Who are you going to turn to when all the crazy Peak-oil doomers end up being right?

Pick your city one and all. When four moderators/administrators agree that a particular city is the first to a) riot and b) due to economic factors we will declare the winners.

Each winner will receive an private message with a link to a picture of a cute doggie from me with which to right click and save as desktop to remind you and yours of your "hot nose" (aka sage insight).

Feel free to add your guess whenever you want but to be eligible for the prize you must enter your wager before 11 am Wall Street time on Friday October 10 or Twelve hours before the first news report of riots, whichever comes first.

My bet goes to Chicago.

I cannot see riots in NYC over this financial situation. Suicides yes, maybe a small demonstration here or there but no riots.
In the US it would take prolonged food shortages to induce enough fear and anger to result in riots. My first guess would not even be in the USA. Probably India. In the USA I would guess LA or Baltimore/DC. LA has great riot weather.

What qualifies as a "massive riot"? My bet would go to America's great riot city - Los Angeles - if there were anything race related in the situation. Which there isn't.

I'd say London or Paris before any US city.

The French seem much more prone to riots than US citizens.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, the US urban riots of the last 40 years or so have one thing in common: They were started by blacks and hispanics. 87% of those arrested during the LA riot of 1992 were black or Mexican, despite these two groups making up <60% of the city's population. 11% of those arrested were white (47% of the city's population). Here in the US I'd put my money on LA, NYC, and Chicago, pretty much in that order. Seattle??? Pfff. Yah, you might get a couple dozen "anarchist" juveniles throwing bricks through Starbucks' windows, but that hardly constitutes a riot.

As for riots "proving" that cities aren't the place to be, 53 people died in the 1992 LA riot. That's 0.0015% of the 1990 population of the city (not including suburbs). And the problems were concentrated in the areas where the above mentioned ethnic groups live and thus were easily avoided unless you lived or worked in those areas. I'll take my chances, thanks very much. And what exactly is supposed to be starting these riots? Once I see Walmart grocery aisles empty, then maybe I'll start prepping for riots. But I don't see that happening anytime soon. I suppose 25%+ unemployment might do it, but a lot of black and Mexican ghettos/barrios already have this level of unemployment.

A right-proper panic could empty grocery shelves in about 3-4 hours.

I'm going to throw in for L.A. and Detroit. I think I'll also go out on a limb and add Houston to the mix.

Houstonians are pretty laid back, but the neighborhoods in SE Houston are still dicey from Hurricane Ike. Add a credit freeze to the mix and some of these people may lose their minds. 20/1 maybe?

You can get all worked up about it being hispanics or blacks or whatever. It's people without food that are dangerous. Have you ever been in a riot like the ones that happened in Haiti recently? The people were screaming we want food It ain't pretty. White people are just as prone to it as blacks. Remember the French Revolution? Let them eat cake.

When the food supply runs low, or there is a problem with supply of gasoline things get dicey. I used to live in Guatemala. They would riot whenever the price of basic staples went up. It's not a great idea to be anywhere near the riot. Believe me. This is one of the best reasons to get out of big cities as things get worse.

I vote for LA, Detroit and small cities like Cinncinati to riot if they have food distribution problems.

People without jobs/food/gasoline are very dangerous. You also have to believe the race card will come in play. I could see this turning into a race war at some point down the road, in certain cities. The different groups blaming the others for their problems.

Revi, your examples just proved my point. Name one white riot in the US since the 1960s. One. The closest thing might have been the "Battle in Seattle," but that was a political protest that resulted in zero deaths and minimal property damage, not people burning down their own neighborhoods and murdering each other in the street by the dozen. Reality is very politically incorrect.

As for the French Revolution, that was more than a couple years ago.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Fishman', 'N')ow where where all those folks that said a city was the place to be during bad times? Oh shiat! I bet they're reconsidering that option now.

Nobody ever said every city was the place to be during bad times.

...and damn sure not Detroit, LA, NYC, DC, etc. etc.

Atlanta, Ga. Take gas shortages, lines, hot weather and throw in financial problems.
