Atlanta gas crunch: 'We've got no gas here'
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')TLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Mohammed Hussain got 3,000 gallons of gas delivered to his Chevron station in suburban Atlanta on Saturday. By Sunday morning, all of the gas, priced at $4.39 per gallon for regular unleaded, was gone.
"We're dry. We've got no gas here," Hussain, the station's manager, said Monday morning.
He said he has "no idea" when the next shipment will come, even though he's been in constant contact with the local terminal.
"It could be days," he said. "Obviously, we're disappointed. We're being patient. That's all we can do."

The quotes about the concern over prices (still at or under $5) when gas is not available at many stations underscores the complete unpreparedness of the people down there
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hristina Wedge, a resident of the Atlanta suburb Decatur, said her tank was on empty Sunday. When she went to fill up, she passed six stations closed down before finally finding one with gas for nearly $5 a gallon. She got just enough to continue looking for a cheaper price.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')I waited 30 minutes to get gas," she said. "It does concern me. I'm actually frustrated that the prices are so high."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ccording to AAA, Atlanta's drivers are in for sticker shock when they do find a station with gasoline. The average price in metro Atlanta, as of Monday, for a gallon of regular unleaded was $4.02, nearly 30 cents higher than the national average of $3.74.

Looks like it is a good idea to buy more oil stocks soon.

I've spent last 3 weeks in Nashville , there is no gasoline anywhere. There is 4 gas stations around me, 1 of them has gas couple times a week for a few hours or so.
It won't be long till you'll see a line of unshaved men with a stock of 5-gallon jugs behind them.

Funny, I never thought of Nashville being the first place where the zombie hoards emerge and start eating the brains of the helpless citizens, but now that you mention it, it has all of the characteristics.... commuting culture, all of the growth happened during the 90's when oil was cheap, minimal if any mass transit, redneck attitude that says "I will give up my truck when you pry my cold, dead hands from the steering wheel".

Simmering below, of course, is a racial divide that no one talks about in these cities in the South. If it were not for the catastrophe on wall street, this catastrophe would be at the top of every news broadcast.

This kind of attitude is not BS. I can see shootings pretty soon as these are the "types" that CC.

Heat, poverty and hunger in Atlanta are going to be a bad mix come summer.

My understanding is that the people in the SE and East Coast are on a pipeline from the Houston/Beaumont area for their primary supply - until it reopens at full capacity, those on the ends of the line get the shaft.

Houston is awash in gas again. Haven't seen police at the pump for 3-4 days now, and most stations have at least regular and usually plus grades of gas. Super and diesel are a bit spotty in places, though.

It would be interesting to know the details. Maybe Georgia has little storage capacity relative to demand? Here in the DC area there is no lack of gas and prices never went up more than a dime a gallon due to the storm. Maybe the gas is prioritized to the areas where people are willing to pay more? Still, it's only about $3.70 here and people would pay a lot more than that.

No gas here. I'm about 1 hour out of Atlanta. I filled up last week (after seeing info on this site), so I'm ok for a few weeks. Our local media was silent on this until yesterday (after all stations were dry).

This has been discussed around here in the past.

The "official" gasoline inventory is something like 200 million barrels, but virtually all of it is already sitting in tanker trucks or moving through pipelines. All of the storage tanks are empty. The entire country is running at minimum operating capacity, and every time there's a minor disruption, shortages pop up downstream. It could take weeks (maybe never) for delivery to return to normal.

Read the DOE Emergency Situation Reports for updates on how repairs are progressing. Latest says BP and Motiva are attempting to restart their Houston refineries; rest are still out. Every day more pipelines come back on line but the Colonial is still on reduced runs, almost certainly for lack of product to put through it.

Folks, I have a confession to make. I went and filled up my vehicle (7.8 gallons at $4.099) at the corner Chevron this morning, and rode down to Stone Mtn for a hike (26 mi round trip), just because I could. The person across from me and the one behind me filling up (I didn't have to wait in line, believe it or not) exchanged the old "guilty" look...topping off our tanks, just because we could. But isn't that what people do in shortages, grab what they can, while they still can? You can't beat good old-fashioned human nature...LOL.

On the way back, I could see that station down the street was apparently dry, and the Chevron was down to one operating pump, with two customers draining what must surely be the last dregs of gasoline in the underground tanks.

So in just a few more hours, I suspect that all of Atlanta will be bone-dry, with no gas to be had anywhere. Supposedly, the tankers are on their way, but I just don't see how they'll be able to keep this vast metropolis of 5 million plus people supplied with gasoline, not at the rate we folks burn it...just ain't no way it can be done. Gonna be real interesting when people actually have to stop driving because they can't get gas. 8)

Haha, I think Laredo Texas fits the bill as well. 95% Hispanic as of the 2000 census.

From what I've read so far, it seems like the gas shortages are concentrated in the Tennessee/Georgia area. They must be at the end of a pipeline which is being drained out further up stream.

Sounds like the people in Tennessee and Georgia need to bid a bit higher then then people downstream for the gas in the pipeline....if they are willing to pay a bit more then they'll get their gas delivered.
