"Maybe things are getting worse and not better." That's how Tex Pitfield, President of Saraguay Petroleum Corp., a local gas distributor described the current gas shortage in Metro-Atlanta during a live interview on 11 Alive News Sunday Today.
"I think we've passed panic, this would be what? More of a desperation sort of thing at this point."
Several drivers have told 11Alive they are worried that they won't find gas to get to work on Monday. And Pitfield said that's a problem even his employees are having.
"That's my issue primarily as a business owner is my staff is having trouble finding gas and getting to work. One of my guys that I desperately needed yesterday morning was a half-hour late because he couldn't find gas," Pitfield said.
Pitfield said it could be several more weeks before things get back to normal for drivers in Georgia.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')My concern is it may be several weeks of these similar conditions before it gets better. A lot of things have to happen. From what I'm told 50% or more of the refineries in the Gulf are in the process of starting up or are starting up and running, but it's a five day process for a refinery to get up and going," said Pitfield.
Pitfield said it would take at least five, maybe ten, more days before some refineries can get gasoline flowing through the pipeline to tanks in Atlanta.
It isn't just us, Pitfield said drivers in Birmingham, Alabama, and Nashville, Tennessee, are also starving for the same gas. Though, he said Nashville got a bit of a break thanks to a couple of barges delivering gasoline there last week. They have a river they can use for that sort of thing Pitfield said. Something Atlanta doesn't have.
"I suggested that we use the Chattahoochee for fuel barges, and I was told that wasn't something that could be done," said Pitfield.
