I am not an advocate of immigration at the scale we see in Europe and North America for reasons I explained

[/url]It is important to see this issue from the perspective of what happens in the source countries when immigration becomes such a dominant force in their politics and economy.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'f') we look at the Philippines for example after world war II they had one of the strongest economies in southeast asia and today they are one of the most corrupt countries. Their biggest export product is their people. You cant find a qualified nurse or doctor in the country because they all leave to work overseas so you have this huge brain drain. The escape valve of exporting their excess population to work overseas makes their government corrupt and the remittances they get from overseas filipinos sending their money back home provides such a large percentage of their GDP that the government isn't pressured to address their corruption. Then you have the irony of the catholic church who would fight child labor on the one hand while telling people condoms are evil.

I would be an advocate of much more strict immigration policy as in the long run this would create such enormous economic and social pressures in a country like the philippines that this could bust their endless cycle of corruption and maybe also break the hold their religious institutions have on fighting against family planning and contraceptive.

A lot of the anti immigration rhetoric out there is from a xenophobic or racist mind set or one that is generated from protecting the interests of the host nations in dealing with their own resource constraints. It is seldom mentioned how severely limiting immigration to poor nations can actually provide benefits for them as well

Ludi, I just noticed you post, and I don't know where you live. But if you include illegal aliens and their children that number would be in excess of 10%. And I don't know any native born American who was here in the 60's or 70’s who would agree with that figure. And 10 % IS A HUGE AMOUNT!!!! These are people the INS could legal KICK OUT OF THIS COUNTRY TOMORROW if they were doing their job

Stopping Immigration legal or illegal is like trying to stop iron filings from being attracted to a magnet. Nature abhors a vacuum, and as long as these migrants perceive life is better here and as long as companies employ them to do the work that "native" Amerikans do, they will keep on coming.

Fortunately for those worried about a ton of Wetbacks coming across the Rio Grande in the future, since we will quite quickly be on an economic par with Mexico, there really won't be incentive for the Wetbacks to swim the Rio Grande. For those already here, they are as Amerikan as the next guy, heck even the "Indians" actually migrated here across the Bering Straight. I got here FIRST! Everybody else OUT! LOL.

The Mexicans might win this battle, because they are used to working hard manual labor jobs for little money. If so, they DESERVE to win the battle. If you wanna win the battle, go pick some Lettuce yourself.

You are SO IGNORANT of American history VMarcHart it is pathetic. At least by your own admission we cannot blame you on the California school system. On the subject of immigration in America I'll use my own family as an example. My mother’s ancestors came over here starting in 1700 to Maryland. At that time Maryland was under control of the King of England (Mexico and Central and South America were under the control of the Kings of Spain and Portugal at that time). This of course disregards Indian claims to the same land (I've always found it Hilarious that Mexicans always disregard this point too when their talking about California!), So my mother side was legal.

My father's side is different. They were immigrants in 1900 from Denmark. My father's grandfather brought his wife and his sister over at the same time. They had to be processed through Ellis Island in New York. Were their documentation was examined for country of origin. They had to pass health examinations for a number of diseases (tuberculosis you were automatically sent back). You also had to prove you had a sponsor who was responsible to support you till you found a job. (I guess this was racist! It only applied to White Europeans!) Today anybody who can violate our laws and run or crawl across our boarders North and South is somehow considered an 'immigrant".

The way I read your story, the English become owner of something that wasn't Spanish in the first place, then wrote laws that suited their agenda, and misled people to believe that anyone that can hop on a ship and cross the ocean is considered a legal immigrant. Sorry, both your parents were illegal, just like most of us.

I live in Texas. I lived in California for a decade prior to moving back here. I was born in California and grew up there during the 60s and early 70s.

I have never managed to feel threatened by immigrants, legal or illegal. Sorry, it's just not something that scares me.

I should add the only time my job was threatened by an immigrant, it was someone from England, a very white person.

they had metal steel iro, walls and even vehicles and the flood buried things as deep as oil and as deep as coal

Towards the end, a caller talks about living by a marble mine in Colorado. They cut this one slab and spilt a human skeleton in half. Inbedded right in the Marble. Last he heard, it was in the office of the place. How old is taht? :razz:
